- VIRGINIA BOHATCHRec'd phone call from this # VBOHATCH@COX.NET
- Jaime| 7 repliesYes, that number is for Social Security BUT BUT BUT when you answer it, it's Portfolio Recovery Associates calling. They have dummied the caller ID system. I am reporting it to SSA
- Caller: Portfolio Recovery Associates
- Call type: Debt collector
- Rob replies to JaimeSame thing here. I reported to the FTC because the number is on the don not call list and because it is an illegal debt collection call.
- PJI received a call "stating to call 800-772-1213" but the # that the call came from was 972-497-1400. Sounds like a scam of some sort. The real SS office should know that someone is doing this.

- dinamanReceived a call from 800-772-1213 and someone speaking very poor English left me a message to call as the SSA needed some additional information from me. I was left the telephone number 253-333-8277 for the return call. I went to my local SSA office and was advised the SSA uses groups around the US to handle online queries. I was given the telephone of a different person to contact.

- Person| 1 replyThe SSA always uses the USPS to send something in the mail to the person they need to contact. Please don't ever give out sensitive info to someone calling your phone; as a helpful person above mentioned in their post, numbers are far too easily spoofed these days. If you need to contact the SSA, please either stop by in person to a local office or check on their official website (which will end in a .gov, NOT .com) and find the official number to call. It is always better to be safe than sorry, esp. when it comes to information such as a social security number.
- Lorraine CheneyReceived a call from an agent with the Social Security office. For identification purposes he asked a few questions. I said I needed him to prove who he was. He came back with the exact date and time I filed for ssbenefits and the amount. He spoke so fast I could hardly understand him. But the jist of it was that because my husband's benefits were more than 50% of my benefits that he could add about $25 more to my check under my husbands application. Is this a scam or is this a valid call?

- DeLynnReceived a call from this number saying they were with the Selenas, CA social security office and had info regarding my social security claim. They left a "direct line" number which was 1-866-670-4735. I called back saying I made no claim in California and do not live there. They asked if my ex-husband made the claim, don't have one I said. They said they needed to look up my info by ID, then they asked for my social security #, totally without thinking as I was at work, like a dumb--ss I gave it!! Then they asked for my full name, calling me Francis. (My name is not Francis.) I told her I made a huge mistake just giving her my social #, and how did I know they were ligit. She claimed Well we are the Social Security Office, and how can we find your info without your name and numbers. I hung up and called the Social Security Government Office. She told me it was most likely an Identification Theft scam and I should call the Trans Union offices to report it immediately@!
- Ed| 2 repliesThis is probably the correct number for the SSA. My wife called the SSA office and a recording said it would be approx. 11 minutes wait time. It gave her the option of having them call her back. It recognized her work number (by computer) and would call her back to that number. She declined the option and entered our home number as the contact number. They have called 3 times in one hour. This is probably legitimate but always be careful not to give out ANY info without knowing who you are speaking to first.

- Marvin| 2 repliesI received a call today from a woman claiming to be from Social Security. She wanted to let me know that my disability benefits had been approved without the need to go to a hearing. She told me I could either receive a paper check in the mail, which obviously would take several days to a week, of if I would give her my bank account / routing info, they could make a direct deposit immediately. I told her I was reticent to give her that info over a cell phone, so she gave me the 800-772-1213 number to call and said give them the info and tell them it was an "MDW' claim. She then gave me another number, 816-936-4555, and asked me to call her back to let her know when I had given the bank info to the people at the 800 number's office. She said she would then be able to call up the info on the computer to go forward with the direct deposit of the money into my bank account. She told me her name was "Mary Jean."
I called my attorney's office and told them about the call and they said they would look into it to determine if Soc Sec had indeed make a decision. They said this is not the normal way that Soc Sec would notify a person about the status of a pending case.
At this point I have not received a call back from my attorney's office, so I have taken no other action. I then received a call-back from the Mary Jean person asking me if I had called the 800 number yet, and I told her no, I had not. She said "Ok, then, I'll just go ahead with processing this as a request for a paper check to be mailed to the recipient's home address. She did not ask me for that info, and I did not offer it. She said I would receive the check sometime early next week. Today is Thursday, so I should get a check early next week."
This whole thing seems a bit odd and scammy to me. I am waiting for my attorney to call me back to let me know if this is legit, or if it is not. I did call the 800 number myself and it was a completely automated answering service type system that purported to be Soc Sec. It sent me through a maze of choices to make using my keypad on my phone or speaking the right words after listening to a list of selection possibilities. It all sounded very Soc Sec like, but when I got to the part asking me for my Soc Sec number, I then hung up. Did not want to go further if this is truly a scam.
Suggest you not give out info on this 800 number and instead you should contact Soc Sec directly by calling the number of your local Soc Sec office (or whichever branch is processing your claim). Or you could call your attorney, as I did, to let them handle the call and get back to you. I suggest caution if urged to call this number.- Caller: Social Security
- nonnoDid not receive a phone call but I did get a letter in the mail. Basically it said that I had unclaimed pension benefits due to me from a company that was bought out in 1998 for the sum of $41,429.00. All of the pertinent info was correct. What I found strange is that it came from SSI but what caught my eye is that my entire SSN was printed on the letter. I have received numerous mailings from SSI usually showing just the last four digits. Don't fall for this scam.
- Kay| 4 repliesI called 888/772-1213 to inquire about a Social Security question. The recording said to dial 0 for a live operator which I did. I was told I had won a $200 gas card and $50 Walmart card. I asked if this was the Social Security office and the lady told me I had dialed the correct number and had been qualified for this promotion and asked for my phone number and address. Then, she said there would be only a one-time charge of $2.90 for processing and asked for a credit or debit card number. When I told her I would not give out that information, she said thanks and hung up. I will also report this to the local Social Security office when I am able to get through on their number. Must be a scam.
- Susan replies to MarvinSo did you really get a check early that next week?

- Castle Shannon Police Dept, PA| 1 replyIf you receive a call from this number and the caller states they are from SSA and you will be receiving a new SS and/or Medicare card in the mail because they checked their records and your due. And then they ask you in conversation for your bank name, bank account number and PIN you must realise that this is a scam. SSA will never call you asking for confidential information. If your "due" new cards I suspect they wil appear in the mail without prior notification. The caller may already have and document some of your personal information like address and SSN. I suggest that you hang up, cal your local police so that they may make community notification and share the information your family, friends and neighbors. Safe to say, NEVER EVER, give out your personal financial informatiion to anyone on the phone that solicted you first. Sgt Caruso 713
