Received a recorded call on my cell phone regarding a bad debt.  I do not have any bad debts.  They left a different number to call back but I was unable to write it down. Could not find anything positive about this company on line.  I will not be returning their call.

Got 5 phone calls in 10 minutes from this company Debt recovery services who tells me that I have to call another number in reference to collecting a debt. I have excellent credit, never late on a card or debt, and think that this must be some scam, so I plan on NOT returning their calls. It appears that this company tries to strong arm people in believing they have old past debts due (maybe some are true) and tries to tell them that their possessions will be taken from them. Look on ripoffreport.com for more details.

I actually have a debt that I am working off with Portfolio but the person I haveing helping me is Kathleen and I am ALWAYS referred to her when I call and they show up on my caller ID.  This guy shows up as a private caller.  Told him I wasn't home gave me a totally different number to call with no extention.  I went to their website http://www.portfoliorecovery.com nothing new there.  When Kathleen calls she is always polite and has worked with me on my ONE debt.  Since I have only one I have no idea who this bozo is that is calling.

Been receiving calls for several days now on a number that we've had for the last five years: we still get calls for the previous owner of the number, and this is one of them.
Unfortunately portfolio's website does not have a contact email address, so here's their "whois" regarding their web registration. Fell free to write them and let them know they need an 'opt-out' for citizens who are being contacted in error:

Recieved call on my CELLPHONE! I only give this number to people I know. Fortunately, I missed the call.  I have received previous calls on my home phone looking for a relative so I will not call back and they better not call again or they will get an earful.  I have perfect credit.

Jennifer,
Per FCC rule FCC 07–232, collection agencies are NOT allowed to call your cell phone UNLESS you have provided you cell phone number on the credit application for the debt trying to be collected. This ruling was just made in 2008 when the collections industry appealed the rules for autodialers and predictive dialing systems. It was a partial victory for them since prior to this ruling, they were not allowed to use these methods at all. Now they are allowed if you put your cell phone number on the application since it was truled that this was "prior consent" to comtact you via that number.
Other than that they can't contact you unless you give them definitive permission to contact you using your cell phone. If you were to sue them, they would have to pay you a minimum of $100 up to a maximum of $500 tripled under extreme circumstances. In Ohio you can go to small claims court and collect up to $3,000.00 Save your coll phone statements or get a copy of the incoming phone log.

The first call I received months ago - accusing me of having an outstanding auto loan - that call didn't come up on Caller ID.
The second time, today, I got on Caller ID.  She identified herself as Debt Recovery Services. Also accusing me of having an outstanding auto loan.  I too, have excellent credit. Not to push a full credit check - but just in case & if it hasn't been done in a while, it is recommended to rule out someone stealing/selling your identity.
Anyway...The key give-away in all of this ridicule... I've never ever had an auto loan.  So come on over, with your papers in hand.  Because I'll never verify my SS# over the phone!

This company keeps calling and mispronouncing our names.  No one in my house knows who this company is.  When they call they give a different number and refuse to identify themsleves.  They may give you their name but not the name of the company.  When you ask for it they scream and yell at you and then threaten you.  I went to their website and they say they are giving debt collection a better name.  That is a bold faced lie.  Even their managers scream and yell and call youa liar.  The company is also on NASDQ.  I would not want stock in a company that is so two faced. The number they give you is 866 428 6589.

I also received calls from this number. and I do not a a oustanding debt. When I ask for the company name the caller would not give it. They said I had a debt from about two or three years ago for about 400.00 on a credit card with whchova b ank. I never had account with this bank. but i said it could be my son with the same name. i said I would call my son and have him call them. One day later I get a call from my doughter who just received a call from her motherinlaw who lives in Pa. different last name. They got me nuts doing that. I will be looking into what I can do to put a end to this .

First person was not nice - hung up, they called back and said "tell X to grow up and pay their bills".  So I jump onto the internet and look them up - phone the 800 number and ask for the supervisor.  The guy gets on the phone and says (honestly he said this) "WHY ARE YOU HARASSING ME?"  I said "excuse me?"  He said that he thought from his switchboard that i was a representative.   I told him that I would report them to the company hdquarters.
What this company is, is an "electronic debtors prison".  They BUY debt from companies who scammed people and weren't paid.  Then the original company could care less about it all and the debt company keeps after and after people to pay a bogus debt.  They lie.  They contact boyfriends, girlfriends.  They keep hounding and hounding.  I wonder if they got paid if they would quit, actually -- and I thought that such things were against the law.

I have received calls from this agency for the past two years.  Most often I ignore them.  I know I have no bills in collection and I have an excellent credit rating.

On at least two other occasions I have returned the calls to inform them that I am not who they are looking for (Robert Brady - if you're out there, pay your bill!) The people I have spoken to have been courteous but evasive until I tell them who I am.  They then promise to remove my phone number from this account.

Today I returned a call (800-860-0644) and spoke to someone named Jeremy.  He too was evasive, and became sarcastic when I told him that I would call the North Carolina State Attorney to stop these calls.  Then he got downright rude.  I don't tolerate rude people much, so I blasted him back.  And will do so again if necessary.

These people will not remove my number, which I have had for 2 years.  They call at least once a month and leave messages for me to return their call.  They obviously have Caller ID, since I never even have to give them my phone number, but aren't professional enough to verify who they are looking for.

I intend to contact the BBB and the State Attorney's office and file complaints.
