- FRED BROWN| 2 repliesThey claimed to be calling from Windows (Microsoft) telling me that my computer has a virus and they need to access my computer. Microsoft doesn't make calls. I have received calls from unknown #s that show up such as 0000000000, 43567, etc.
- Caller: WINDOWS
- Kim replies to FRED BROWN| 1 replyMy mother received the same- today. Beware!!
- donw| 1 replyThese guys (talked with three guys all had Indian accents) cold called me today claiming there were problems on my Windows computer. They seem to have a real company (5482 Wilshire Blvd #1518
Los Angeles CA 90036) with a working support line (800-778-8162) where a second guy verified the company name. They also have a web site http://www.nextelsolutions.com/ that lists this number on the site
The first guy (who claimed his name was "Mike" :D ) tried to convince me there were "horrible unknown viruses already running on my computer that would corrupt my system". He directed me to http://www.teamviewer.com and wanted me to click on "Join Remote Control Session" which would download and install http://download.teamviewer.com/download/TeamViewerQS_en.exe (which is a legitimate web site and online meeting product with the option to give control of my desktop to a remote party). Presumably he would give me the IP of his remote server once I installed the remote meeting software and ask me to give them control. I was not running a quarantined system on a virtual machine so I elected not to install anything, but I instead insisted that he walk me through the steps to verify I had an infection. This frustrated him but he did give it a try by telling me to start the standard msconfig utility and look at my system services. Some were stopped. He attempted to convince me this was a problem. When I convinced him this was not a problem he had a third guy join our conversation and talk to me. This third guy realized pretty quick I knew what I was doing and they hung up and did not call me back.
During the call the first guy assured me his tech would not "run anything behind my back" (his words) and that I would "see everything they were doing" and that I needed to "trust him". He continued to ask why I was worried and I replied that I was not worried but that he needed to show me something that was actually wrong with my computer. He said he needed to connect to show me. I refused and insisted that he walk me through the steps his tech would use to verify I had an infection. (I would not have downloaded or installed anything had he asked) He insisted that it was too complicated and that I couldn't do it. I asked *him to trust me* that I could, but he wouldn't.
After about 30 minutes ;) I asked how they made their money and he said if they found anything wrong they would charge me a reasonable price to fix it. But he exaggerated the importance of everything and tried to use fear to convince me to do what he asked. This is not illegal and I have no evidence that they would have installed anything malicious on my system had I given them control of it, but it is all highly suspicious, and very dangerous to give control of your desktop to anyone. Bottom line, even if this is a legitimate company, it is a really hard way to make money.
Some other details:
The first guy first walked me through starting up the standard event log viewer (eventvwr) and was "surprised" that there were 32,768 events in the log (this is the system imposed limit, it is 2 raise to the 15th - an even binary number and frequently used as a limit for saving information accumulated over time). I was not surprised, there were only 100 or so errors or warnings among the 32000+ information messages. The errors were small things like the defrag program was run incorrectly or some installation failed because it didn't have the correct permissions. Also a warning message is issued every time the computer restarts, no big deal.
They claimed to have gotten my number from "ebay where I bought my computer" but my ebay account lists a different phone number. My address and the number that they called however is listed, so perhaps a shipping record somewhere tipped them off.- Caller: Nextel E Solutions

- RobA very persistent and arrogant guy named "Mike Miller" with a very heavy India accent has called me twice, he says he is from Windows? and that my computer is giving error signals and he must instruct me what to do on my computer to eliminate the problem, he keeps insisting he is legitimate and that I must believe him, "so why is your caller ID an Unknown Number?" I asked him, and "if you are legitimate why don't you email me?", blah blah blah was his reply, In my opinion this scam is not trustworthy, beware!
- Caller: Windows
- JamesJust got the same call from an Indian guy who wouldn't answer my question of whether the call was being recorded. Total scam, would love to know how to make life miserable for these trolls.

- janeI just received this call and the man that spoke broken english insisted I listen to him because there is a virus with my micro soft. I advised him that my husband is a police officer and is monitoring this call and will check it out with the authorities. I asked for the phone number and this is the one he gave. I asked because the number came up private name private number on my caller ID. We all really have to be careful of these scams.
- Caller: He didn.t say
- Treythey say they are tech defender and that something is wrong with my computer- WTF - they called my cell phone - the call quality was terrible, i could barely make out his indian accent - i was on the other line and immediately suspected something was off when they seemed like they were phishing for information- they have me their number to call them back even though they used a blocked number to call me. then they called me back AGAIN an hour later when i was still on the phone - totally shady dudes downloading malware and malicious software to your machine snooping for banking and personal data... BEWARE and report them to the police or FBI any chance you can - they are committing cyber CRIMES
- Caller: Tech Defender
- jennKept getting an unknown call, once i actually picked up and the person on the other end of the line had a heavy Indian accent saying he is from windows and that my computer had severe malware blah blah blah. (Haven't really used my computer much lately and i only use it for school purposes, no reason for it to have malware). Even after i told him i was at work he insisted on me turning on my computer. I asked for a # to call back, he hung up. This was a few wks ago and i thought that would be the end of it.
This was about 2 wks ago. Today i got a phone call again. I was told his name is mike told me my computer was reporting back to them spyware... i said i was at work, asked for a #. He gave me this #. Once i wrote it down i said i was calling consumer affairs to report this. He blatently said ok miss you can go ahead and do that now.
Do not trust this. Spamers and hackers is a growing career path. - paulBeware! Heavy Indian accent guy name is Mike Williams???? hahaha I am Paul Newman Hahaha

- JohnThey're still at it! I just enjoyed a call from "austin johnson" 1.800.778.8162
Same scam. - Lee" Alex Johnson", who had a strong accent, just phoned me saying my computer had a problem. Said he was with "Nextel E Solutions". He said I should phone him back at 800-778-8162 when I was at my computer. Oddity is that my telephone showed that he had phoned from phone number "6-4766."
- Caller: "Nextel E Solutions"- he said
- Catherine YoungI got a call from a blocked number and was addressed by "Tom Watson" who claimed to be from Nextel E Solutions, and that he was checking on up on my Windows Operating System. He had a thick Indian accent. Because I have often gotten these kinds of calls lately, I asked him if I could call him back and give me his number. He gave me the number above. I looked up Nextel E Solutions online and saw by their website that they don't do anything associated with Windows OS maintenance, but the phone number was the same. I assumed I had been given a false number, so I decided to call it and see if I could speak with a rep from the company, (which appears legit even if someone else is using their name and number) and let them know that someone was using their name and number to pull a scam. I was connected with another person with an Indian accent, who called himself Sam Morris. I then asked "Sam" where he was from, and he said Los Angeles. I asked how someone of his obvious cultural background had a name like Sam Morris, and he had no answer. I then informed him I was on the DO NOT CALL list and asked how he got my information. He said he would take me off his list. I THINK THESE GUYS HAVE SOMEHOW MANAGED TO HIJACK THE PHONE NUMBER OF A LEGITIMATE BUSINESS AND ARE USING IT TO DO THEIR SCAM. Don't know how to contact the actual company to let them know.

Got a phone call from Alex Johnson who claimed that he is with Microsoft Support and that my computer is reporting a lot errors on their side. Wanted me to go to my computer and do this and this and push this button and this button and I said "OK". Asked him how he got the messages and he said from my IP number. I asked him to give it to me and he kept repeating it but will mess up the last 3 numbers and could not understand if he is saying a number or a letter so I just gave up to ask. Said to him what if he is hacker and trying to still my info and he said hackers dont call people, right. Asked him for a phone number and he gave me the 800-778-8162. I went on google and looked them up I knew they are a scam and told him I will call him back and hang up. This is the second time he calls me. The first time was several months ago. My house was broken into in august and they stole only my laptop. I have to look up and see what is my IP number. But sounds like a scam. I have brand new laptop now and not too many errors.- Caller: claim he is from microsoft support
- Tony 2These guys have been calling me for years with the same shpeal.
After they were so frustrated with me the Indian named Daniel Walker said to me when you call back ask for
“YOU MOTHER F*****” right. Remember to ask for YOU MOTHER F@#$” so I hung up and then they called me back several times after from an unknown phone #. What a bunch of sickos!- Caller: Nextel E Solutions
- LatvianLadyHad a call today from man with Asian accent claiming I had faults etc with my compouter. This scam has been widely publicised in UK which I told him and said I would report him. I asked for his number and address. He gave an address, 304 Melton Street in Leicester, The street exists but not the number, It has just very poor terraced housing with mostly Asian occupants. Perhaps a relative lives there! The phone number he gave was 1800 etc, All freephone UK numbers start 0800. I let him know I knew it was a scam and that I would report him. Consumer programmes have often warned against this type of fraudster thank goodness.

- Louise replies to donwThanks so much for your lengthy explanation because they have kept bugging me by calling repeatedly and me turning them down. Now I know why.
- GaryOK, This "Windows" company keeps calling me. The Event Viewer they direct you to look at is on every windows computer and there is always errors. They are just filtering the logs to show you the errors so you feel good about allowing them access to your computer. (The errors are not being sent to them or Microsoft as they say.) They direct you to TeamViewer web site, and then want the code so they can look at your computer.
*** DON'T DO IT *** Hangup on them. Your computer IS NOT sending error messages to them or Microsoft. If you are worried about your computer, take it to your local computer shop that you trust.
OR, have fun with them as I do. I am working on other tasks or making supper. I keep them on the phone as long as I can until they get upset. The more time I can keep them on the phone, the less time they have to cause issues for others.- Caller: Windows
