- diamonddee| 66 repliesI actually was instructed by the IRS TO CALL THIS NUMBER! I filed my return back in March. . .still waiting for it! As it turns out, my school never got my 1098-T to them on time! Ergo, I looked like a fradulent claim! If you are receiving a call from this number, it is the IRS's "Taxpater Protection Unit," and this number you want to answer!
- Caller: IRS-Taxpayer Protection Unit
- skip| 14 repliesDont think this is a legit number for IRS , got a letter from someone claiming to be IRS / google mapped adress on letter and it just open highway , no building or place to put building
- Taxes| 3 repliesThe number is legit, IRS rep I called told me I had to call this number to verify information for my taxes.
- sophieThis number is real its a IRS number used when tax information dont match records or information is missing in a tax refund filled return...
- Caller: been doing my own taxes 7yrs
- hot dog| 4 repliesGot a letter from IRS wants more info for my tax return. I called this number and the rep ask many questions. at the end ask for my routing number and the last 4 digits of my account where the tax refund will send to. It sounds very fishy. I gave out too much info. Is this unit " integrity & verification operations" unit real? Please some one let me know.
- Mrs. H.| 13 repliesI too got a letter from the "IRS" telling me to call this number, as they needed more information to verify my tax return. The letter looks very legit! VERY LEGIT! I made call, but haven't received my refund yet, and now I'm getting worried. For those of you above that say this is NOT a scam....how do you know this for sure? I'm starting to get worried about my refund. Someone, plesae reply! :) Thanks.
- DaFox replies to Mrs. H.| 4 repliesFollow the procedure the IRS has laid out on finding out if you have received a scam or real IRS message:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Report-Phishing - IM replies to Mrs. H.Call your local IRS office, and they will tell you whether it is ok to call the number or not. The IRS is being proactive to try to catch fraudulent returns before they pay refunds to the wrong person who may be using your Social Security number to try to get your refund. Call your local office, and if you are still concerned, take the letter, your ID, and copy of your return into the local office. If you do not respond to the letter, they may not send you a refund because they do not know if you are a scammer or the real person.
- Gwenne| 6 repliesI got a letter saying to contact 1-800-830-5084 and/or website identity verification service (idverify.irs.gov) and seeing the letterhead looked authentic, I went ahead and submitted the questions to be told it couldn't be verified, but I feel like I'm in a movie that my ID has now been stolen after all the care I do to protect my phones and e-mails, and now this.
I am on social security, retired, since 2009 which last return was done in 2010 for 2009, none needed since.
They claim they need info. to process the 2013 1040A submitted but it was NOT submitted by ME.
Everyone is closed on weekends so I have to be terrified till Monday to see what happened here. - Sarah replies to DaFox| 3 repliesPhishing only refers to scams conducted electronically. The letter in question (I received one, too) is a hard copy sent via US mail.

I went to the site and entered a lot of made-up data and it gives the same result. No matter what you put down the site says "can't verify." A lot of people are reporting the same thing: It says "they can't verify."
Doesn't the IRS already have all your relevant tax information? What would be the purpose of the IDVERIFY site? - jackpat| 16 repliesI received 2 copies of the same letter and a form to use for mailing payment. Mine is a 5071C letter saying my 1040A form was received but they need more information for the tax year mentioned above. The Tax Year above is 2013 and I have not filed my taxes yet. Also never use Form 1040A. I haven't called the 800 830-5084 # listed yet nor tried the Identity Verification Service website. All the Austin. TX IRS addresses on the official site have no street address and the zip for all is 73301 plus 4 digits that vary for different offices. The letter I got and the return payment form use an
address on S Interregional Hwy 35 with a 78741 zip code. Looks pretty fraudulent to me. My SS # is on it, too.- Caller: No call - only letter

http://www.dallasnews.com/business/columnists ... ity-thieves.ece - Lorelei replies to hot dog| 1 replyYes. Its a real IRS site and phone number. The 5071c letter almost guarantees that someone,( other than you) filed a return using your SSN and info. You are being protected. Its o.k.z
- Gunnar replies to LoreleiNo, it's not "o.k.z."! If you receive this letter, take it to your nearest I.R.S. office & talk to an agent. If you can't do so, contact the I.R.S. @ 800-829-1040 & explain the situation to an agent. The I.R.S. will be the first to tell you that absolutely NOTHING should be taken at face value. Whether it be by mail or phone call. The foreign scammers have been very busy this year. It's tax time, they know it & they're desperate.
Be Safe. Be Aware.
Gunnar - Silver replies to jackpatMy Dad got similar letters to yours, and when he called the number (same number as yours) he was told that someone else had filed a tax return in his name already, so they wanted to verify his identity, and had him send a copy of his return to the Austin address on Interregional Hwy 35. Fearful that it might be a scam, I called the IRS Identity Protection Unit (number obtained from irs.gov website), speaking to Miss Howard, who also gave me her ID number. She verified that the address and phone number do belong to the IRS, and that sometimes they do ask people to re-submit their returns. This was reassuring to me: I hope it is to you too.
