Wells Fargo has clearly stated on more than one occasion that they will not contact you by phone asking for personal information.
Anyone who responds to these 800 calls is putting their accounts and persoal security at risk for fraud and theft. Period.

This absolutely is suspicious, I got the Paypal bit, and I went to the site to check my account, there is nothing of an unusual activity going on in my acct.  If Paypal has a problem, they notify you through your account and can verify their identity in the email as well.  I ignored them, and am keeping an eye on my checking acct as well.

Ok, seriously people. Just google the number and you'll see that it has been mentioned on the numerous webpages of real actual banks or credit unions. Now, you might still think it's a fraud, but it would have to be a very elaborate and massive one.

I got a call from them today, five minutes after I made one of my purchases online.

I didn't answer it immediately, and I looked it up online later (that's how I found this page). They called me again later in the day, and didn't ask me about ANY of the personal data, except whether I was the person they were trying to contact and whether I have indeed made payments of 51,99 USD to Amazon and 7,99 to Paypal recently. I said I did, coz I did. And that was it. Nothing fishy there.

The people who called left a message with my family member said they were with PayPal Security. They called on my secondary number listed on PayPal, which made me suspicious. I went to the PayPal site and then phoned PayPal directly going through multiple "security hoops" to even get to an agent. Once I spoke with an agent, she said they were not trying to contact me and I should disregard the call. I told her that others were receiving the calls too (based on feedback on this site). BEWARE of whom you give your personal info to over the phone. I thought Phishing was only online. It's getting too personal now! -cv

800-830-8574 is also used by Bank of the West to verify electronic transactions on your bank-issued Mastercard debit card.  There is nothing suspicious about this number - I've dealt with them dozens of times and they are who thay say they are. Do answer them, however.  You never know when or if someone has accessed your bank-issued Mastercard or Visa debit card.
They call nearly immediately, too - so they are doing the job they were hired to do, which is to look out for fraudulent charges made by others on your account.  For once, this is a GOOD number to have pop up!

Isn't it illegal for a company to misrepresent themselves?  They left a message on my machine saying they were PAYPAL.  I still have that message recorded, and will be contacing the authorities.  Well Fargo will be getting in a lot of trouble, according to my brother-in-law who is an internet security attorney.

I just received a message from this phone number stating that it was Paypal security wanting to confirm recent transactions on my Paypal Premier Debit/Mastercard.  I immediately went online to research the number and found this web site.  I then called the number on the back of my Paypal card and asked the Paypal agent to confirm the 1-800-830-8574 number and tell me whether it was really a number for Paypal security.  The agent confirmed that the phone number is indeed just that.

I then called 1-800-830-8574 and the computer has you confirm the last four digits on your paypal card.  It then asks you to confirm the last 4-5 purchases on your Paypal card.  IT IS NOT A SCAM!!!!!

What is up with all of the paranoia about this phone number?  All of the people who are saying this is a scam couldn't be more wrong.  If you have a Paypal debit card and you get a call from this number, you really should call it back to confirm recent transactions.  Otherwise, they'll probably freeze your account until they get hold of you.

THIS IS COMPLETELY LEGIT.
If you make a large purchase, you can guarantee this protective service will track it and make sure you actually did make this purchase. it seems to be through PNC which was the case with me. I was afraid but calling PNC, they verified the information with me.

This isnt a scam, as other have said.  I called, they had my transaction info and purchase amount.  I asked why they had that info, girl said they are a third party company contracted out by several credit card companies and banks to verify transactions.  This service limits the amount of unauthorized transactions, and lost money for these financial institutions.  Do not be weary of these calls, they are providing a service to help save you time and money down the road.  Call was very quick, only took about 2 minutes including the explanation of their services.

Do not let this make you comfortable with these types of calls however.  If you do receive a call that asks for info, do not assume that they are with this company, or are this type of company unless they have very specific account information.

I received a computer generated call informing me of unusual activity and asking for last four of acct. no..  I hung up and immediately called my bank. The bank did not, and will not ever ask for account information over phone.

I just had a call from 800.830.8574 that was a recording saying they were from PayPal and needed to verify my PayPal account.  I didn't believe the scam, called PayPal and reported the fraud number.

People are not only phising my email, but, phone too.  Stay clear from them!

No way.. I use PayPal card all the time. This IS their 3rd party verification number they have always used. If you call it back they do not want any information from you other than to verify the last five transactions.

Got a call from this on 7/9/07. This is not a scam, as Stew is trying to say it is. The first post is true. I called them back and only gave the last 4 digits of my credit card, it asked me if I was the person who was on the card and if I was calling from the same number I recieved the call from, pressed yes for both, then it asked me if it was me who had made a purchase for a specified amount at a type of store. I had made that purchase so I pressed the yes. It does not ask for personal info and it is just a fraud protection mesure that is activated when large purchases are made that are out of the ordnary. This number is NOT a scam.

If it wasn't a scam then why was it from Paypal for me, but Wells Fargo for you. I think it is just the people trying to scam that are posting that this number is not a scam.

I hate to inform you but it is truely a scam. I got an email sometime back that detailed the scam to a T. All they need is your last 4 numbers as with many cards they first numbers are all the same and they then just have you verify all the info they need to steal your identity. Hope it works out for you.

I ordered something over the internet a couple of days ago using Paypal.  I don't use Paypal that often and it seems that every time I do, Wells Fargo puts a freeze on my account.  I got a message today from this number, but like others was leery.  I decided to call the number on the back of my credit card (Wells Fargo) and they confirmed that they had indeed called.  Probably the best thing to do is call the number on the back of the credit card.  That way you know you're calling the right people.
