    Vague message about an investigation; 'please call me before anything is filed in violation of state law'.  Typical shake - down call.  Ignore.

    No - it's a scam attempt!  Debt is civil, not criminal, so no, there are NO "charges".

    Per the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act), you should not pay any caller who refuses to MAIL - do not accept email or fax - proof of debt/proof your caller has the legal right to collect said debt.  Refusal to mail this documentation within five days of their first contact with you is a violation of federal law - as is threatening you with "charges".

    Just because someone calls and has information on you, does NOT mean that they are who they claim to be.  Always demand written, verifiable proof that you owe them money - otherwise, you're likely to pay scammers.

    This person has called me repeatedly and also called my sister and my boss. I am consolidating my pay day loans and have an attorney. He is harrassing me. He identifies himself as Jeff Martin and says they are pressing charges.

    i first got the call from my mother who said this PDO/PDL collection place looking for me. My mother told them I don't live there. she called me so i called and they said i have to resolve this debt or put some money down or they are going to file charges and let social security know. I told them I don't have the money he said well we don't have nothing else to talk about. i called my wifes bankrupcy lawyer and told them about this. the guy said don't worry it is a scam. so i called mom to tell her what i found out. in a few days she called back and she said they called again.. I then called Neb Attorney Genral and told them what was going on. They said it is a scam and they asked me if i wanted them to call them i said sure. I got a call back and the lady said that they told her that they wouldn't call me. Finaly she said sign up for that do not call list. She wanted to fill me in more but, she wasn't there so I have to wait a few days before she gets back

    While it is good that the Neb AG's Office got them to stop calling you, their comment to sign up for the DNC list won't stop calls from debt collectors since they are not required to use it.

    I work for a local government agency, and this number calls my office a couple of times a month. Every time I answer and it's this number an automated message plays. They have used different names but most often it states "This is Alison Berkly, It is important you contact me at 800-840-xxxx extension xxxx. When calling please reference case # 206387....." I have yet to get a message that states a company name. They never identify if they are trying to collect anything, but they do state they are not a marketing/advertising call. They never identify who they are supposedly trying to contact either.  It has to be a scam because they are calling a government office in heavy rotation.

    I received a taunting and threatening call from "Bob Buckley" at the PDL Group in New York from (800) 840-7564.  He stated I owed a bill to a company and they were filing for che.ck fraud.  We are on a medical hardship program, which he laughed about, because he said if we could pay the hardship company who was stealing our money, we could pay the other company.  I had notified the other company well in advance that we could no longer pay them and that the checking account they had been taking payments out of automatically was being closed.  I gave them the company handling our hardship bills and their contact information.  So this guy continued to jerk me around, joking, etc. until I told him my daughter was an attorney....and he said you might want to call her then!  I told him maybe I would and hung up the phone.  These people should be shut down completely.  I find nothing but "scam" about them

    This is a SCAM  !
    They identified as PDL Group (800) 840-7564, only had my first name and nothing more, came up with a story of a bad check issued to their client, blah blah blah.   They tried the same scam before and left similar v-mails, but I never contacted them.
    Just delete their messages and don't even think of calling them back or they will never stop harassing you.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
