To the guy who is worried that he's "screwed" :P

No worries - the call is legit - call your student loan company (using the number on your bill, if you are still leery of this number)..

Legit or not, one should never give out their SSN over the phone, especially if you were the answerer, not the caller.  If you have a student loan, there is no reason why they wouldn't have your SSN on file already as your loan/account number and your SSN are the same.

I used to work for them when AFSA Data Corp serviced Direct Loans. (It's ACS now.) We used the social security number to verify that we are talking to the correct person. Another words, it is a privacy issue. We have A LOT of information on borrowers that should not be told to anyone not authorized to see the accounts.

Since loans are assigned a number, why are you not asking for that number to verify if they are the people you want?

Many different reasons, many people can see your bill, grab your number.

Your ss# "should" remain private and only you and the company should know it. That being said, its more likely to be you speaking with them.

The way to deal with them is to satisfy your loan situation. You can run and hide but they will seek after you for at least 27 years. In those 27 years the interest and fees keep building up. You can never go bankrupt on these loans. They will garnish your wages and social security. Not calling them and making arrangements is about the dumbest thing a borrower can do as they offer so many different options.

Do you work for the banks? You can declare bankruptcy on student loans under certain specific circumstances such as becoming disabled. Go to the govt. websites if you don't believe me.

Number is not legit and has noting to do with FAFSA or ED, these people are not the Dept. of Ed. and cannot garnish your wages without a civil judgment aginst you. Proper # for Dept. of Ed. is 1-800-USA-LEARN (1-800-872-5327). If one of the tells they are with the U.S. Dept. of Ed. call us at Federal Trade Comission, would like to know about it.

If you go directly through the government's own site, you will find this number on one of their pages (http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/handbook/fsahelp.html), clearly presented as belonging to them.  It's not pleasant to discover that the government really is calling me directly because they want money from me that I don't have, but the number is nonetheless legitimate.  This really is the feds calling about education loans/debts.

the post that lists the ed.gov website where the number is listed is really the first thing anyone who is concerned should be looking for and is the only thing anyone needs to feel reassured that it is a legit number. The rest of the posts require believing that some anonymous person has their facts straight, but the government website confirms that it was someone from the department of education actually calling you (assuming they didn't call you and ask for your info and just mention the phone number, but rather left the number for you to call them). My recommendation: if you get one of those calls and it is legit, then they won't mind you telling them that you want to confirm for yourself that the number is legit and call back. It is not paranoid to check up on these things and the people working at DOE know that.

Well after "X" amount of time the account goes to the US Debt Collections services in Texas. Once it goes there you have less option and more fees.

It is ACS which services the accounts. In other words, the US Department of Education contracts the servicing of the account to businesses.

This number IS legit, it is just a particular area of the Department of Education that deals with loan repayment, not a main branch. I've done business with them before while dealing with the status of my Stafford Loans.

I received a call from "Dept. of Ed." this morning stating one of my friends used me as a reference.  My caller ID showed: UNKNOWN.  The lady gave me this 800 and asked that I have my friend call them.  I got in touch /c my friend and they stated this is a fishing scam and to be very careful.
