A very frustrated phone jockey named "Bill" called me at work to claim I had a debt, but would not provide contact information, nor would he provide information about the company he was calling from, nor would he provide information on the "debt" in writing.  After I wouldn't provide him with bank account information, he sent me to his "supervisor," "Nina," who provided this telephone number and would say only that her company was called "CCA."

This number was given in a voice mail message. It appeared on my phone as ID restricted. I returned a call to this number but received a message identifying themselves as CCA. When I entered the provided ext. number, I got no answer nor option to leave a message. I am suspicious of this call due to the fact that I am not deliquent on any accounts, much less any that would have been turned over to a collection agency. Most reputable and legitimate companies have elaborate answering systems many of which offer multiple opportunities to leave messages, or at the very least allow you to speak with a real human. It would appear to me this number is being used by scam artists that may be attempting to defraud unsuspecting individuals.

I was receiving calls from 877-533-6998 and now from a different number
800-896-4539. Both outfits claim they are calling regarding an important business matter and that the return call by me (which ain't going to happen) is time sensitive. The first number claims to be in the Mountain time zone and the second in the Eastern time zone. Anyone out there have any idea who these people are?

These people called me too. Actually, I should say they called my work in China. I was given the message to call them back. I did not because I did not solicit the call and had no idea who they could be. After about 5 or 6 times, I looked up what little information I had on google. That was CCA and the phone number. I came to this site.

How do I get them to stop? They are harrassing the receptionist at my place of work.

this number has called twice and asked for my daughter at college to call.  One time they said they were CCA and the other time the DOE.  We owe nothing of this sort to anybody.  I am glad we did not forward this to our daughter.  She may have given info that she should not have.

Based upon information found here, internet research was done and it was found that CCA is "Collecto, Inc., d/b/a CCA is a privately held National Debt Management and Recover Resource Company." this statement is from thier web site at http://www.colecto.com/CCA_About_Us.aspx   They have five locations in the United States.

I have received two calls without caller id and sent the call to voicemail.  Neither VM containted any identification information, just "Important" and the number to call.

Hope this helps with who they are.

From past experiance .. I would call back the 800 number that has been given to you people. CCA or Collecto is a company that handles accounts for the Department of Education ...so if you are getting calls at work .. then I would call back asap before you get your wages garnished and save yourself some embarrasement at work ... and for all you people who think they are tryin to scam you ... they cant release information on an answering machine or voicemail per the PRIVACY ACT better known as collections laws, this protects you morons and all your private info such as your SS# ect. And if you want the phone calls to stop .. then maybe you should pay your bills and you wont have to worry about it :-)

Well there are State and Federal Laws which must be followed collection agencies and that includes automated calls and voice mail messages that require the identity of the calling company to be stated.  But from the "Morons" statement made by Tipster, I must conlude that is one the many people under trained by Collecto.  The lack of training may be one of the reasons that many of use are complaining about Collecto.  Just check the debt collection laws and you may learn.

PS Tipster- it is illegal for debit collections to threaten garnishment and embarrasement at work, but Collecto must of forgotten to tell you that.
But I do agree that if we own the money we must pay.

Its the actions of companies like Collecto that cause those of us strugling to pay, but, who dont have to lie, threaten, or deceive others, from getting the increase in income that thier lies, threats and deception keep us from.

This is Collecto Inc. aka CCA (Collection Company of America). They do collect on federal student loans among other types of debt. Their contact for Dept of Ed loans is PO Box 5369, Norwell MA 02061-5369; 800-896-0282.
You can send them a cease and desist letter (see budhibbs.com) but if it is a federal SL the debt will not go away. The govt can garnish you or take your income tax refunds after notifying you in writing. You can certainly tell them not to call you at work also. But ultimately there are only 3 ways to get rid of SLs: Pay them, fight the govt in court and win, or die. I wish I a better answer but I dont. Get involved in changing SL law so these debts do not become the third certainty of life. You know: Death and taxes; add SLs to that expression. You can shut these guys up with the letter I mentioned but a few months later someone else will be calling you. Believe me I know.

One important note to keep in mind:  They may be bothering the wrong person.  I have a fairly unusual last name and a common first name.  There is a deadbeat with the same first and last name but different middle name.  The deadbeat is hard to find; I am easy to find.  About 3-4 times per year, a bill collector "discovers" me and tries to collect the other person's bills.

Sometimes, you are trying to beat off the bill collectors and they aren't even your bills!  This company is just the latest.

Just wanted to let all of you complainers know..that without CCA my credit would be horrible. I am thankful that I had the help of my rep Brianne and her manager Charlene! They were so pleasant to talk to and that was shocking to me! I usually try and avoid bill collectors. But CCA is not like all the others, I am happy that I had the chance to work with such lovely people!

Yup, I agree. I have been fighting the DOE for 28 years trying to get a payment plan that I can live with. CCA is the first one whom came up with a plan that I can do. And they were actually polite and cordial. Finally a turning point.

its not like a visa bill, they can call you every 3 days... you can tell them not to call all you want, before you talk about the fair debt collection practices act you may want to go read it, then pull out your prom. notes and see just want the government can do when you don't pay them back. the collection company contracted to work the account it not harassing you... you are harassing the government by not paying you debt

Yes, 800-896-4539 is CCA, a collection agency contracted by the US Dept of Education and they are calling in regards to defaulted students loans. I would highly suggest you contact this agency to avoid potential consequences such as an administrative wage garnishment.
