Please be aware that this is an identity theft scam. Do not give out your SIN number or any other personal information, as Revenue Canada already has this information on file.- Caller: REVENUE CANADA
- INVESTIGATIONS replies to Investigations| 1 replyWARNING: This is an attempt at identity theft!!! Read the following report from the RCMP:
Police Report June 5, 2007 (http://www.mission.ca/PageFactory.aspx?PageID=971&PageMode=Print )
"And another attempt to get honest people to part with their hard earned money. On June 2nd, Mission RCMP received a complaint from a citizen who reports receiving a recorded message from a person claiming to be with Revenue Canada. The message directed the citizen to call back to phone number 1-800-959-2250 with her Social Insurance Number. Revenue Canada was contacted and advised they do not utilize this 800 number nor do they ever have to ask a person their SIN. This is just a reminder to never disclose personal information to anyone on the telephone or on the computer unless you are absolutely sure the recipient is legitimate." - ClaireTCIBC replies to INVESTIGATIONSThey are currently being investigated by the fraud department. If these people attempt to contact you again, hang up.
- Jeanio replies to ReneeI had identical to you Renee and I did exactly what you did with the same results. No issues on tax file that would initiate any kind of call.
- BobHas made several calls to our number. Will never leave a message or send a letter. Say they are the Government but if they were the Government of Canada they would leave a message or send a letter. I talked to a person in collections at Government of Canada and he said we should report them because it is not the Government. Government does not phone and ask you to verifify you SIN. They know it. They would ask you other questions to verify that ir is them. People that call are very rude. So I know it is not who they say they are. Anyone can tell you a number to call. It could have anyone answering the number and say anything to you. They could have put in a phone number to get your information. Its is a Scam.
- JovanyYes this is Canada revenue asking for money we owe. I sent the money quiet some time ago thrue the bank and they even knew about the amount of money we sent in... who knows whats going on...
THEY CALLED ME FROM AN 1800 NUMBER...- Call type: Debt collector
- DixenI started getting calls from this number. I never picked up because i generally distrust 1-800 #'s. I called revenue canada agency GST/HST credit department (1-800-959-1953) and they told me that if a government agent calls you they will NOT ask for you SIN, they will already have it in your file. They checked my account and said everything was fine. I asked whether the government usually sends a letter about outstanding taxes and they said yes.
NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR SIN NUMBER TO INCOMMING CALLERS ON THE PHONE!!!
ASK THEM TO SEND YOU A LETTER!! If its really the government they will send you a letter.
I called back the 1-800-931-1026 number and the girl who answered (predictably) asked my SIN number to which I refused and asked whether she could give me other reference numbers to call. She gave me :
1-800-959-2270 - she said this was info canada
-which when googled comes up with no results (you'd think if it was a legit government number this would come up in the directory)
she also gave me:
1-800-622-3262 - she said this was the o canada #
-do they think we can't spell? o canada # is 1-800-622-6232
If they call me again I'm going to report this to the authorities, it's harrasment. - Cee-cee| 2 repliesI've been getting these calls on my business line all summer. I never answer, never call them back. But now they call me four or five times a day. It must stop. I do not owe any money on taxes or anything else. If anyone can tell me who I need to contact to put an end to this harrassment please let me know.

- fustrated in T.O. replies to Cee-cee| 1 replyI called the number on my cell phone and blocked my number. It told me to have my S.I.N. number or my registration number ready. Then asked if I wanted to continue in english or french, so I pressd the 1 key for english and got a message saying > we will be right with you> in english and then in FRENCH ???????????? !!!!!!!!!!!!It should have only been in english since I pressed the english key. This is a scam. Never give out information personal information, and never your sin or banking information. ( i was at a wireless booth to pay my account one day and the staff were asking this gentleman for his S.I.N. so he get a contract with them, I immediately told him to never give that information to anyone, he then decided to walk away from the deal, then the sales people were upset with me and I told them that they should not be asking for that type of information. I think they lost commission on that deal, oh well!)

- Peoples replies to Hannah| 52 repliesI have received about 2-3 calls from this number and I do not believe it is Revenue Canada for the following reasons:
1. Their offices are only open from 8:30am to 4:30pm across Canada. Why would they be calling at such late hours?
2. If any Government agency needs your personal information they will send you a letter and NOT call you and ask for the information over the phone without verifying your identity first. If they've been asking you for a relatives SIN number than that should be a giveaway right there, because that's ILLEGAL!
3. If it is a government agency they would not call and not leave a message.
Trust me this is a scam! Don't respond to it!! - Peoples replies to George H.| 1 replyYES this is a CCRA number but when you answer it is not RevCan that answers. It is someone else using their number to disguise their real identity and scamming people out of their personal info. The ongoing complaints of unprofessional conduct and strange requests for personal info indicate this is not who is answering. My brother works for the Federal Gov. and he has told me that there is no way any Gov. agency will call and NOT leave a message. THIS IS NOT CASE CLOSED!! I will be referring this to CCRA and the RCMP.
- AnonymAnother pissed off Canadian harassed by some 800 931-1026 scammer, who do we call to complain? the Ottawa employees are all scammer themselves, I cant tell one from another!
- Caller: Revenue Canada
- Government_Cog| 3 repliesTo those suggesting this is a scam... Wow, you guys are dense.
Yes, it's the CRA.
Yes, you can confirm that it's the CRA by calling the number they suggest (1-800 O-CANADA, or 622 6232.) If you don't believe that's a government number either... open your phone book. Look in the blue pages. See the big number in bold?
Yes, you have to share your SIN with them... Your SIN was issued to you BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT for a number of purposes, including management of INCOME TAX. Hey, you'll never guess why the CRA is calling you.- Caller: Canada Revenue Agency
- pierreThey want to check my social insurance/security number.
- Call type: Debt collector
- none replies to Government_Cog| 1 replySo many people aren't actually reading all the details, or understanding how the phone system works. Worse, they're representing themselves as experts.
When the call is INCOMING, many people can make the call display say anything they want. Just because 800-931-1026 is a CRA number, that doesn't mean it's actually the CRA on the phone calling you. It's someone making the call display info read GOC-GDC 800-931-1026 - maybe it is the CRA, maybe it isn't.
Of course when you call the number you actually get the CRA, that doesn't mean that all of these people phoning you are the CRA.
Note how the callers are telling people to call 1-800-OCANADA to verify that 800-931-1026 is real (which it is), but they want you to talk to THEM the next time they phone you back. They aren't offering for you to call 1-800-OCANADA to deal with your entire "issue" (whatever that may be), only to verify the number.
The government says never give your SIN over the phone unless you placed the call and know who you're talking to. Just follow their instructions. - none replies to noneFurther, these callers DID leave a message once.
When we played the message, our Bell Call Answer service said "Dialing Canada Revenue Agency" and outdialed to somewhere. We hung up.
Perhaps the real CRA is looking to speak with us, but I have no idea why. I'm not sure that any scammer no matter how clever could make Call Answer do that, unless it does that for anyone who provides a callback #.
I answered tonight and got 30 seconds of silence before I hung up.
This has been going on for months, with nothing ever arriving in the mail.
I won't do anything with anyone I did not call at a public CRA number. - babsI am an accountant and I usually call from this number many times. Usually, the call gets hanged up, I wonder why.. Looks like a computer may be dialing but call does not get through.
Anyways, today, immediately after hang up, I got the actual call from Winnipeg CRA. This is GST collection department and they were requesting some information for one of my clients. No, did not ask for or confirmed any of the SIN or BN info. You will NEVER have to if CRA calls you.- Caller: GOC-GDC
- Call type: Debt collector
- Mike| 1 replyGot call, asked for person that doesn't live here, wrong number.
The strange thing is that my phone isn't showing any phone number, but just the "GOD-GDC" caller id. The phone number portion is blank.
Can someone spoof this caller id? Who decides what gets displayed in the caller id field? Can a company/scammer control this?
And what I find really annoying is that there aren't any consensus here. Some people say it's all ok, and others are saying it's not. No one is listening to each other and no progress is made. Very frustrating.
