It's Cingular calling about a late payment. Said I need to pay my bill (I am a little late) or my service will be disconnected. Had to give them my credit card info. Once they start calling they call non-stop. The earlier you answer the faster they stop :)
    Caller: Cingular

      BAD ADVICE!!!  DO NOT HEED!!!

It is a scam.  Do not give them your private info, especially a credit card.  Make them send you a bill or tell them you'll pay at the office.

This is the Cingular/AT&T number. I have been dealing with the company for years; through all the changes. This is not a scam.
And, if you have been paying online with them at all or have paid over the phone any time before, you would not have to update your payment information anyway. They will just take it from your previous payments.
I would not suggest ignoring this call. At least work something out with them. They will cut you off. And that $36 reconnection fee is no joke either!

Yes it is a scam.  I have had SPRINT for the past 3 years and started getting calls from this number in the past few months.  Why would it be legitimate if I've never had Cingular?

That your number is Sprint now, does not mean it wasn't AT&T at some point.  I have AT&T and ported the number over from Verizon.... the previous person had ported it TO Verizon FROM AT&T... so for a while I was getting calls from both Verizon AND AT&T regarding the number and someone else's name.... none of the calls was a "scam".... but were related to the systems not quite catching up to all the porting back and forth with the number.

Number portability is a great thing... but can cause confusion within carriers.  I've also had sales calls from Verizon using the other name and trying to get the number to "come back to Verizon".... not gonna happen, but thanks anyway.  After several rounds of "that person no longer has this number, please update your database with the correct information" ... it finally seems to have stopped.

That a number is NOW with Sprint, doesn't mean it wasn't with AT&T at some point and that that person didn't leave a bill behind.... it happens.  Once you clarify that YOU are not THEM and tell them to stop calling you, the calls should stop.

it is not a scam you idiot.
if you dont have at&t the reason they call you is because for whatever reason someone has your number listed as their home number...perhaps its a recycled number! CRAZY huh!!
seriously...if you go to at&t's website it will give you the 800 number and if you CALL at&t's customer service they will tell you the same thing..hell if you are really THAT worried go into a STORE and ask them.  if you dont have at&t ANSWER THE CALL...tell them you dont have at&t and they will do a case to remove your number.  quit being so paranoid.  If you do have at&t and think its a scam then call back at 611...guess who you will get...the same person who just called you and they will tell you to pay your bill.  now if you called 611 from a cell phone do you really think it would just redirect you to the same scam?  No.  It wouldnt.  You people who are blabbing about this being a big scam are idiots.  Also for those of you who say your bill isnt late when they call chances are 1) there was a problem processing your payment..like maybe your credit card was declined or 2) you paid the day before and their dialer is loaded 1 day in advance.  At&t calls as a courtesy to let you know your acct. is in danger of service interruption.  You should be thanking the rep not accusing them of trying to steal your money!

It's not a scam because they call the number people list on their accounts as their home line when they sign up.

A lot of customers and AT&T sales reps just put in any random number as a home contact number to either dodge these annoying phone calls, or speed up the credit application when they activate lines

Because with number portability, that number COULD HAVE been with either AT&T or Sprint, or any other carrier for that matter... BEFORE YOU GOT THE NUMBER.

It happens.  The number isn't a scam -- it may be based on outdated records, but it's not a scam.

If it had been ported to your current carrier by the previous person, and they didn't pay off AT&T, that number will still get calls from AT&T about the bill, until you straighten out the fact that you're not that person... then they'll stop.  I had to explain that I'd only had the number for a couple of months and was not the previous person, then the calls for their old bill stopped.

And after almost 4 years, I STILL get calls on my landline for the previous owners of that number.... go figure.

To answer your question. I have had ATT for years, never had SPRINT, but I have been getting calls from SPRINT asking me to pay my bill. What you need to do is call them and ask for the fraud department. What happens is someone makes up a number for there contact number and it happens to be yours. SPRINT has checked for me the first time it happened, and had my number as contact for 5 differant people, none of whom I know. One person gave my number as there work number. Try calling them it works

It is due the same time every month..If you call and schedule a payment you will not have to pay that 36 dollar reconnection fee. and if you schedule a date you must keep that payment date.. If not you will not get a chance for another 3 to 6 months to schedule with them

This IS AT&T (Cingular) customer service. My bill has been late MANY times and I have called them back at this number, spoken to a customer service representative and paid my bill with several different credit cards and my bank card. I have never ONCE had a problem with any type of fraud doing it this way... and I've had service with them for the past 9 years. Bottom line is if YOU don't feel comfortable giving them your credit card info, offer to go online and make a payment. DO NOT believe the people saying this is a scam, because its not. IF it were my bill would show as NEVER having been paid and I would owe them $50,000 bucks by now! haha!

Additionally, now that I've used many different cards to make a payment with them, they just ask me which card I would like to use-I give them the last 4 digits and they bill that card.

I agree. this is AT&T.  I absolutely positively guarantee that this number is AT&T.   they are super aggressive at getting payments if you are more than 12 hours late, they will start calling you 3 to 4 times a day every day even after you make payment arrangements.  I started getting the calls on a Wednesday for the bill with a Due date on that previous Monday a couple days before.  I kept telling them I apologize for the fact that the bill is 2 days late and I'll pay by credit card over the internet on Friday morning, they say ok and hang up, and the process repeats 4 or 5 times a day for the next couple days until I get the payment in exactly as I stated to them the previous 14 calls.  Next month, I called them early before the bill was due, just to avoid this.  I told them my bill was due later on in that week, I'll be a couple days late paying it but will pay by credit card that friday, they agreed and thanked me for my call.  It didn't help making arrangements before time, the calls still kept coming the very next day after the bill was due, even with the preemptive call on my part.  The calls have threatening undertones and the collection folks are very aggressive.  I've never been more than 8 days late on my bill, but I deal with this every month.  It is a scheduled part of my life now.  It's just life with AT&T.

Got a call from this number.  Went online and checked my balance - $0. Called 611 from my phone to inquire and the rep was clueless why I would get a call, said my account was perfect, as it always is.  Never give credit card info over the phone to anyone who calls you.  Go to a website and get the number or use one of the service numbers in your phone.  Even if the call is legit, protect yourself and you initiate the call.  Dont call the number that called you either unless you validate it from the vendors website.

It IS a scam!  The ones saying it isn't must be part of it...I've been getting calls for a week, so I finally called back.  Spoke to a rep, who sounded like an idiot who didn't know how to type (stalling--making me wonder if I'm paying $1000/minute for the call).  Gave my number, he couldn't find the account, so he asked for name and then social security number.  I wouldn't be that dumb, so then he asked for previous numbers that could have been mine before moving.  The kicker is it's my work phone that is paid by the state so I never get billing questions.  I told the rep I was beginning to suspect that it was a scam, and he just said "...yeah, okay..." and then kept on with the conversation!  I told him I worked for a law enforcement agency and we were investigating right now...."so what was your previous address?"  Would ATT hear that and respond that way?  I don't think so.  It will be interesting to see if they call back.

I called Att wireless at the main number. The woman said that the number is an ATT collection agency. She was able to look at my account and see that it was prepaid and up to date. The person at 1.800.94.5096 did not have access to this information. I think att hired a really bad collection agency who wants to get the money any way they can even if you are not the right person. The real att rep added that it is probably a debt from the person who held the number prior to me. I got it in Feb of 08. Shouldn't the collection agency have this information (that the number has a new owner) if att does? I have had other collection agencys wrongly call on new home number but they apoligized and took me off the list as soon as I told them it was a new number for me. My advice is call the main number for att wireless not the number that called you.

They only call at the end of the month when your bill is due and so by next month I'll have forgotten the number again. Then I'll google it, I'll come here and realize "Oh hey, I need to pay my cell phone bill."

Okay, after reading all these messages, I phoned back. Yes, I have a land line, but my cell is with Verizon. I have automatic payment deductions, so I am never late with any bill. The man was very courteous and stated he could not access my account since it was not a wireless phone number. He transferred me to the business office. I received an automated message that the office was closed (just called and it is 7:15 pm).  Since I know I am never late, this was a WASTE OF MY TIME! Generally the calls I receive from AT&T are sale pitches (add, upgrade, ie.).

Like so many others have stated, NEVER give personal info over the phone - they should have that already on record!

One would think that AT&T would have the technology availiable to transmit their caller ID. I don't always answer the phone when the caller ID supresses the information. Did answer this time and it was AT&T Wireless, regarding my bill. I had notified them months ago that this phone had been lost or stolen and cancelled the account.(Got the rep's name when I reported it and since my office records all converations, was easy to pull the conversation.
Apparently rep did not follow through and cancel the number and a number of calls werte made after my reporting.

Went down in person and played the recording. They were more upset that I had recorded the conversation then there were about not canceling the service when requested. AT&T is either incompetent or they employ deceptive business practices.

Don't give out any info and if you do have AT&T all you have to do is say you'll pay in store or online which is AT&T's preffered payment methods. AT&T will not hassle you to pay them over the phone they'd preffer you go in store and take care of any issues there for your safety. Do not give out any info and please avoid being scammed. Play safe and go to a store or online. Hope this helps everyone.
Also forgot to mention that another payment method AT&T likes to have people try and use more often is text to pay. Use either of the 3 online, in store, or text and you'll be in the best condition to avoid scam.
