This phone number is used by the Canada Revenue Agency collection department.
"And another attempt to get honest people to part with their hard earned money. On June 2nd, Mission RCMP received a complaint from a citizen who reports receiving a recorded message from a person claiming to be with Revenue Canada. The message directed the citizen to call back to phone number 1-800-959-2250 with her Social Insurance Number. Revenue Canada was contacted and advised they do not utilize this 800 number nor do they ever have to ask a person their SIN. This is just a reminder to never disclose personal information to anyone on the telephone or on the computer unless you are absolutely sure the recipient is legitimate."
The ph # 1-800-959-2250 is CRA's national collection call centre. They DO leave messeges asking taxpayers to call back with thier SIN #. This is the only way they are able to look up your account on thier system. Same way the General Enquiries department for canada revenue asks you to provide SIN when you call them (1 800 959 8281 : this # is easily found on the cra website.) When a collection call centre agent calls a taxpayer, then no, they do not ask for your SIN as the automatic dialer has already broughten up the acct. Again, call 1 800 O Canada to verify.
since you sin is unique to you and only you in Canada, it is your account number for taxes, cpp, employment insurance, child tax benefit, etc,,, how else do you suppose they will bring up your account without the unique identifyer known as you sin?
I got a message to call back this phone number as well. I was a bit hesitant to provide my SIN but the person who answered was very professional and told me that I could verifiy the legitimacy of their phone number by calling 1-800-O-CANADA (which appears in the BLUE PAGES AND on the GOVERNMENCT OF CANADA WEBSITE). They were calling me because I owed back taxes and I was able to set up a payment arrangement with the person and the address that they told me to send my post-dated cheques appears on the Canada Revenue Agency website. I called back a few years later and they were able to provide me with my latest balance too. 100% legit.
I could not verify that that was a revenue canada number they have a website cra-arc.gc.ca the number was not there, why would service canada identify a revenue canada number anyways??? sounds suspicious to me
The Canada Revenue Agency doesn't advertise this number. Service Canada's 1 800 O-Canada (where I personally work) will confirm that it is a legitimate number, to confirm to the caller that they are calling back a legitimate Government of Canada department. It will not give out the number unless someone specifically identifies that they have received a call from the number. 1 800 O-Canada is the Government of Canada's toll-free information service that gives information and referrals to federal programs. It is completely valid.
This is not legitimate at all and whoever is posting these messages are probably the culprits involved. Revenue Canada will never call you and ask you for you SIN number as they already have this information on file. These con artists are very good at convincing people that they are legitimate, even providing you the actual phone number to contact revenue Canada if you don't believe them. Don't be fooled! If these people call you again, hand up and call your local authorities or Revenue canada to place the report. They will be caught, hopefully soon.
You're right, the Canada Revenue Agency would never call a person and ask them to provide their SIN, however when a person is calling IN to the Canada Revenue Agency, the phone agent is not telepathic and would require the account number to look up the account. Make sense? Verify with 1-800-OCanada as other posters have already mentioned when you are skeptical.
You're right, CRA doesn't ask for your sin when they call you as all the numbers that will be called that day have been loaded into an automatic dialer and yes, the account pops up on the screen. They ask for the contact, address and date of birth to ensure tht they are speaking with the correct contact. Never will ask for the sin on a call out. When you call in, however, the screen doesn't magically know you and your info doesn't just pop up. If your name was all that was needed to locate your file, it would take a long time to find the right joe smith from calgary, leading to the use of a unique identifying number. you can change your name, address, telephone number and job, but your sin is yours for life.
called saying they were the CRA. wanted to verify my home address... then my SIN i did not give it out. then they told me to call 1800 o canada to verify it and call them back. they are scam artists. im glad i gave out no info for identity theft.
I just got a call from this number. I am in the burlington area and i called 1 800 o canada and they said it is legit. so now i am totally comfused. Because the rcmp link that DW posted looks legit too. So i guess I wont call them back at that number, i will use the number on the Canada revenue website :s
