I keep getting calls from 1-800 numbers. I don't answer them but I'd like to know where the call is coming from.
MCS Financial Advisors is an independent fee-only Registered Investment Adviser, and we do not make telemarketing calls. Since March 2007, however, we have been receiving complaints from people who have been contacted by a telemarketer. These people are either angry at the frequency and persistence of the calls, or are worried because they gave the caller personal information that may be used in fraudulent activity. In order to protect our reputation, we have devoted significant time and energy to researching and responding to these concerns.
The most common complaint stems from calls made by Mutual Consolidated Savings, a credit counseling service located in Tacoma, Washington, USA. This company targets Canadians and U.S. citizens in automated and live telemarketing calls, and asks the callers to contact them at these numbers: 800-961-9830, 877-891-1348, 866-627-9325, 800-943-3250. In their recorded messages and in some of their live calls, they may identify themselves as “MCS Financial Services” or “MCS Wealth”. We have contacted them through the Better Business Bureau, and they have promised to discontinue their use of these names. As of December 2007, however, we are still receiving reports of their use of the name “MCS Wealth”.
If you have registered your name with the National Do-Not-Call Registry, then telemarketers should not be contacting you. Below are some resources to help stop these calls.
The other complaints have come from people contacted by a “vishing” scam artist. This illegal scheme seeks to acquire personal information from victims through phone calls offering bogus services. The scam is to use this acquired information to drain the victims’ bank accounts, open credit or merchant accounts in the victims’ names, or make fraudulent charges on their credit cards. The callers identify themselves as our firm, falsify the Caller-ID record to show our 800 number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing), and try to get personal information from potential victims. If this has happened to you, I urge you to file a complaint with the FTC. If you have provided them with information, you should protect yourself immediately. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission website (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/) is a good place to start if you feel your information has been compromised or stolen.
Thanks for the information Jeff. Operating a business from home, I am constantly interrrupted by telemarketers or, worse, automated messages. I would never consider doing business with a company that initiated contact with such a lack of respect for my time and peace of mind. I can't guess how many thousands of dollars in lost business these have cost me through legitimate customers not getting through on the first attempt. Canadian laws are toothless but the links you provided are useful. I sympathize with your victimization by these companies and wish you good luck

Got a call from this # today MCS....financial services I believe. They put a message on the answering machine. Blocked this phone # from calling us. Called back, and a recording...to help get out of credit card debt. They are blocked and not interested. They called a Canada # too, and these are all USA companies and telemarketers that are calling me in Canada...what a pain! MCS Financial Services” or “MCS Wealth"
I have been receiving several calls from this number. They left messages on my answering machine indicating that they offered interest rates 4-10% lower that what I was currently paying and if my credit card balance was higher than 4000$ I should call the number: 1-800-961-9830.
January 2008- still receiving these annoying call from 1-800-961-9830 again today and almost every day. I will most certainly add my number to the NO CALL list indicated on this site page. THANKS. I was being cautiuos to not talk to them and when I did told them I would NOT under any circumstances devulge any personnel info to them. MCS still called... Phishin' scam if I ever heard one before. DON"T Answer their calls and get on the NO call listing SOON ALL!!! they call me 2 to 6 times a week for months now...buzz off I say to MCS!
Just received a call from these people (AGAIN). I get these calls 2 to 3 times a week!!!!!
I filed a complaint with the CRTC in Ottawa, (see below);
"I receive calls from this company EVERY WEEK. I'm sick and tired of these calls. CAN YOU PLEASE DO SOMETHING TO STOP THIS COMPANY FROM HARASSING ME?
I just received another recorded message call from 1 (800) 961-9830. They identify themselves as MCS Financial... however the web site 800notes.com ( http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-800-961-9830 ) says differently.
MCS Financial says it is not them and they referred me to your web site to complain. MCS Financial claims these calls are coming from a credit counselling service called Mutual Consolidated Savings, a credit counselling service located in Tacoma, Washington, which claims to be MCS Financial (fraudulently).
They called at lunch time today and didn't leave a message. I called the 1800 # back and pressed 0. I got a guy but when I asked to be put on their do not call list he just hung up on me!!!!
I am getting sick of all these telemarketing scams, they are starting to really bother me.. I have no credit cards so what are they thinking I have told them I have no debt but they keep calling. What to do how do they get our numbers anyway?...
1-800-961-9830 phoned my home this morning. I don't answer "unknown" or "unavailable" caller ID calls. No doubt some money grubbing scumbag "free market" type low lives who don't want to work for a living. May all their children die slow painful deaths right before their eyes.
