Call from man with very thick Indian Accent. Stated his name was David, David White and he had the understanding that I was interested in "Free Money from the Government by Government Grant". This is probably the 10th strange call I have received in the past 2 weeks asking if i wanted a loan or money to go back to school. I have not even inquired about school since i left College over 10 years ago.

*Update* Tried calling back to find out what the name of the company was so that I can add it to this post......   Number is a non-working number!  WTH!

I've been getting a few calls a day from various numbers, none have left a message. Looking them all up there seems to be a trend in some scam involving grants/loans for education. Must be identity theft or something similar. Those who have answered report being asked for personal information that no one should give out to a stranger over the phone. I've also recently found out that these scammers are using a new technique where they are able to spoof where the call is originating from. The one today for me said Utah, but the same number is listed on another site as being from California. I have seen the same pattern with other numbers from these type of calls. I'm on the do not call list with an unlisted number, but obviously that does absolutely no good any more. Instead of a nationwide do not call list, there should be some place we can all report these bogus and annoying calls to as harassment or scams.

Once a day I get a call from them.  Same thing as the others:  government grant.  Same thing as the others:  it's a non-working number when I try to call back.

Same thing with me! They call several times per day but when I see its from Spain, that's right, I said Spain, or Utah, and various other states I DO NOT ANSWER AT ALL! I'm actually thinking about answering the next time they call by saying FBI,may I help you??? THEY JUST CALLED BACK RIGHT THEN AND I ANSWERED AND SAID FBI, MAY I HELP YOU, HOW MAY I DIRECT YOUR CALL? Nobody said anything and then all of a sudden an automated voice came on and just said "goodbye!"

Since I do not know the area code or number, since caller ID shows nothing but a number, I ignore it like all the rest, let it go to voicemail.  As they say "shot em all, let God separate out the good from the bad".  Most calls coming into my house and office (local business) go unanswered.  When the economy is in the toilet (Obama got the numbers to drop by discontinuing federal extensions in several states forcing the hopeless to use charity and college funds) these snakes have a tendency to come out from the woodwork as an attempt to survive.  Can't we shoot em?  Same as a robber with a gun and a mask in the old west days.  Hang em or shoot em but make an example of these fricking scammers from China, Russia and India.  I know I would attend or participate.

Do not rely on the area code they are calling from as a indication of where in the world the caller is located.  Collection companies use the same trick.  They buy numbers just like you can from Vonage, magicjack or some other provider that permits you a choice in where you want your number to be from.  I can get a 213 (Los Angeles downtown) number and I live in Oregon.

    Government Grant Scams
Although government grant scams have been around almost as long as the government itself, the majority of the sites being advertised today didn't exist before the November 2008 election.

‘Free Government Grants’: Don’t Take Them For Grant-ed
    excerpt from FT CONSUMER ALERT

Don’t pay any money for a “free” government grant. If you have to pay money to claim a “free” government grant, it isn’t really free. A real government agency won’t ask you to pay a processing fee for a grant that you have already been awarded — or to pay for a list of grant-making institutions. The names of agencies and foundations that award grants are available for free at any public library or on the Internet.

The only official access point for all federal grant-making agencies is www.grants.gov.

Don’t give out your bank account information to anyone you don’t know. Scammers pressure people to divulge their bank account information so that they can steal the money in the account. Always keep your bank account information confidential. Don’t share it unless you are familiar with the company and know why the information is necessary.

I got the same number calling me continuously for the last few hours...I found out the same thing that everyone else has, only no one has replied when I answered.  This is annoying at best but it also wastes the time and minutes of our cell phones.  Ridiculous...

Me too ... what everyone else said.  I suggest you add the number to a block-list if your phone supports it.  If not, check for a call-blocking app.  Answering just encourages them to keep calling back, no matter what you say to them.
