I've received at least three calls from this number over the past month on my home phone.  The number shows registered to a Justin Harold Terry on Collins Blvd in Ogden, UT, but it's possible that the number has been spoofed.  Since whoever calls never leaves a message, I suspect it's a phishing operation  trying to scam people into revealing their personal info.  If you're a legitimate caller then leave a message!  I hardly ever answer my home phone anymore because of calls like these.

Update to my previous post:  801-605-1816 is definitely a scam artist phishing for personal information.  I read a post on another site earlier today stating that the person who called claimed to be an IRS representative.  THIS IS A SCAM!  The IRS does not call you unless you contact them by telephone FIRST.  If you owe the IRS money or are delinquent in filing your returns, the IRS will send you a letter--they will not call.  I got another hang up call (no message left) from this number less than 12 hours ago, which makes at least four calls this month from 801-605-1816.  If you get  a call from this number, do not answer--IT'S A SCAM designed to trick people into revealing their personal information!

Received a call asking me to return call to a local number 559-459-5473, a Mrs. Guttierrez telling me they are calling about a form I sent to their office and they have a question about my form.  However, they identify they will be in the office until 3:00 p.m. Pacific time.  Interesting if they are in the same time zone as me?  I have not sent any forms and they did not identify what kind of form.

    (801) 605-1816 this number is a SCAM. Some one called my phone left a message saying calling from IRS, gave a different number to call at the end of the day. The above posting is TRUE that IRS does not call your number they issue a letter to address on file.

The number in fact serves the IRS. I can tell you without a doubt that the IRS will call you if there is official business.   The individual calling you should offer their badge number and where they are located and the purpose of their call. If this is not given at the front of the call, that may be a clue that it is less than genuine. Ask the individual for this information; there should be no resistance from the caller in the interest of "transparency".

The number you are referring to serves the Phoenix metro area (perhaps other areas as well, but Phoenix I know for sure); these calls are routed through Ogden, Utah (which happens to host a fairly large IRS facility).

    Hope this helps.

The reason they are giving you a different number to call is that when they call you, the call is being routed through their call center in Ogden, UTAH. They may be in Phoenix, and will leave a message with a 602 area code. You got a call from the Fresno office (area code 559) - and yes, the IRS have a very large office in Fresno, CA.

If you decide to call back, ask them to verify their identity - badge number, location, purpose of their call, etc. You should not get ANY push back from the agent whatsoever.

    Not a SCAM.

Just a "P.S." - they will call you. Based on the information left on your return either by you or your accountant. This is typically more common at the Large Business and International (LB & I) or Small Business-Self Employed (SBSE) level. Don't be surprised by a call simply to verify information relevant to your return for a specific tax year - chances are you are being randomly audited.

Better to call your nearest or local IRS Office to check for validity in this day and age of phone scams.  Never give information to anyone over the phone schedule a face to face meeting with an agent to clarify information

Funny thing--both my wife and I got a call from this number today, several times. No message. Looked at this website, suspicion aroused--but two things. Not many scammers are well-organized enough to be calling both my wifes's and my numbers, AND we do have current business with the IRS. I happened to have a recent letter from them, so called the direct number, and the guy who sent me the letter confirmed it was him trying to reach us. They have a computer phone system, it routes things thru a central number, and he kept trying to leave a message but our Verizon phones and his computer weren't working together--he said it didn't seem to register his voice. (I've had this happen to me once, stupid computers). Anyway, it WAS legit in our case. Just FYI.

There seem to be conflicting posts concerning the legitimacy of calls from this number.
Therefore, it would be safest, if you get such a call, to verify the call by a different means, such as calling your local IRS office via the phone number in your phone book (not the one shown on your Caller ID).

There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers in both Canada and the USA.
USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first, unless you have contacted them via another means.

My office and I have been called by these CROOKS posing as IRS. One number used is 801-612-4504 and the other is 801-605-1816.

IRS NEVER calls you about a tax bill. NEVER. They will give you a number to call, as part of an official written notice. They write letters.

These folks SOUND legitimate, so they will be successfully SCAMMING some folks. No doubt.

Yes indeed Slim.   Many believe that the IRS never calls. That is most often true,  but not always true. They do indeed call in some instances and under some circumstances.  The IRS Compromise center in Atlanta contacted me last year, by phone,  concerning  my  "Offer of Compromise" case that had been in progress for about 5 months.  All they  wanted was to verify that nothing had changed that would impact my ability to pay the back taxes before reaching a decision. They advised me of their Acceptance decision via USPS Granny mail about 3 weeks later.  Yes,  98+ percent of the time,  they will use USPS Granny mail.   Regardless of how nice they may sound or how threatening,  the important thing is,    As you advised Slim,  Don't trust anyone and it is an absolute must that you verify the validity of the caller by initiating   contact with a known  IRS office to verify..
    Thank you for your post......

I happen to work for the IRS. This number is the number that shows in Caller ID when I call anyone. Also, I call people regularly in the course of my work. - - The scam is someone calling saying they are from the IRS and threatening various actions, if you do not send a payment immediately. The scammers ask you to get debt or cash cards and call them back with the numbers. - - When I call, at least for the first time, I'm never asking for money.
