I recently got a call from 801-902-7000. My caller ID said Unknown Caller, just the phone number displayed. Sweet talking lady said she was from Discover Bank and wanted to know my new address because a refund check of a small balance (turned out to be 1 cent) left in my closed money market account was returned to them from my old address. I said just write it off. She said "okay, we'll donate "it" (that's when I asked & found out it was 1 penny) to the Make a Wish Foundation." Then, she proceeded to the real purpose of the phone call: "To support our taking this action, would you mind providing me with more personal information?"  I said No and hung up. There's a lot of new scammers out there because of the negative job market and I guess some clever people are putting grandmothers in the telephone boiler rooms now...my personal rule: NEVER GIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE TO A "UNKNOWN CALLER" CALLER ID...

Why do they want more personal information?  For what?  Also, they never stop calling, they call literally 20 times a day and don't identify themselves.  If it is a legitimate call they would tell you who they are and what they want.  I am so sick of them ringing my phone and no matter how many times I say take me off your list and stop calling, they just keep on calling and calling and calling.  Can this be reported somewhere?

This is an arm of Discover Card, but in my case it was for the student loan we applied for.

I got a call from this number mentioning "a student loan application", BUT I DIDN'T apply for any loans or for a new job. I called Discover Student Loans from the phone number in it's website, because this phone number doesn't take actual calls. They have no record of my name in their system but put me on a do not call list. So we'll see if that stops it.if I get anymore calls, I know they're not really from Discover at all.

So I am a bank teller at Discover Bank. Yes it is a real bank, no WE ARE NOT SCAMERS. The reason we ask for personal information is because of what is called "The Patriot Act" it is a federal LAW set by Pres. Bush after 9/11. personal information will only be asked if your information has already been added to our system, and the only way that could happen is if you open an acct with us. I can understand that it can sound VERY scetchy especially if we call you, but I can assure you it is done LAWFULLY.

This is a discussion forum where one can report or describe suspicious or unknown phone calls, but reporting them here does not stop the calling.  YOU have to take action to do that!  (google is your friend).  Consider buying a call blocker app from your favorite or app store if nothing else works.

    It's a legitimate Discover Card/Bank phone number.
I got a call from them regarding a legal matter that required me to get a new/updated card, and they just wanted to verify I was actually me. The woman, although very pleasant and knowledgeable of my circumstance, never identified herself, and asked for for confirmation information; said I'd be receiving my new card in a few days.
It wasn't until after I hung up that I thought I may have just been scammed. Regardless, I called Discover today to verify that someone from their organization had indeed contacted me yesterday. Confirmed. I'm happy.

    A few points…

The Patriot Act requires banks and CC companies to collect accurate information on those who have accounts, but it DOES NOT require the customer to provide that information to anyone who calls them, no matter whether the caller is legit or not.

NEVER give your personal information to anyone who calls you. NEVER. There is no way for you to know who the caller is. Caller ID is easily faked. Even if the caller gives you a number to call, don't.

Even if the caller seems to have a certain amount of information about you DO NOT give them ANY personal information. Identity theft / cc scammers are very good at convincing victims that they can be trusted using a tiny amount of personal info they can easily find online.

If someone calls you, just inform them that you will need to call the company back, for security reasons. A scammer -- or a poorly-trained rep -- will try to keep you on the line to get your information. A real pro will say they understand, and ask you to follow up on your own.

DO NOT call any number that an inbound caller gives you. If it's an 800/888/866 number, it's likely that the number is legit, but there are no guarantees; even scammers can get 800 numbers.

Always initiate contact with your bank or cc company yourself, by phone or via the web, using a number or URL you know you can trust -- like the ones on the back of your credit card -- before providing personal information.

    Let's be safe out there.
