Caller belligerently informed me that I was under investigation by the IRS. He spoke so quickly I couldn't respond, and it was like he was leaving a voice mail even though I had answered. He said I or my lawyer should call him and made a threat of dire consequences if I should ignore the call. When I returned the call (immediately) I asked what I was being investigated for. He said I should have my lawyer call him. I repeated I need to know what it is about so I can get the correct type of lawyer. "Officer Garry" said he couldn't tell me. When I said if I'm being investigated I need to know why, he said to have my lawyer call him and hung up. I guarantee, I am NOT having my lawyer call him, nor will I call again.

I got the same exact call. I did not answer as I did not recognize the number. I listened to the VM and whoever it was, sounded extremely angry. The VM said "do not try and disregard this message. Just give me a call back as soon as you get this message. If I don't hear back from you or an attorney,  the only thing I can do is wish you good luck as the situation will badly unfold on you." Now, I've never been contacted by the IRS, but I think they would be a little bit nicer and a lot less threatening.

There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Phone-Scams-C ... 5-Filing-Season

Canadian tax payers should read this:
    http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2013/l131210-eng.html

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

Just got the same call 30 minutes ago and was told I owe xxx of dollars.   I kept asking for what cause I needed to explain to my husband.  The officer told me that I was going to be arrested in 25 minutes and not to call them.  When I spoke with my husband he told me it was a scam.

I received the same voice mail message. It was from Officer Andrew Stanley at 804-472-8163. Telling me or my lawyer to contact him. I will patiently await what ever is coming my way for ignoring this message.

It was very threating. He said my attorney or I needed to call Officer Andrew Stanley back at 804-472-8163. The message said "do not try and disregard this message. Just give me a call back as soon as you get this message. If I don't hear back from you or an attorney,  the only thing I can do is wish you good luck as the situation will badly unfold on you." He didn't say what company he was calling from.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

Don't engage these criminals. They will just become more brazen and threatening. They are only interested in obtaining your unconditional and docile cooperation in getting access to your bank account so they can wipe you out. Just hang up and block the number.

Ditto on all of the above, I called back, for more info (I had already heard about this scam) and introduced myself as a Federal Officer, person asked for my phone number, I asked what agency he represented.  Must have hit a nerve, he hung up on me.  Next, called local police (I shouldn't have called back) and they assured me it was a scam, not to worry, don't give any information, again, IRS does NOT contact via phone calls.  Yes, they had strong accents, eastern European or Middle East (we always thing Middle East today, unfortunately).  Maybe Al Quida is running out of money or, better still, ISIS?  I can hope!
