- Catwoman| 2 repliesJust received a call on my cell and at work from a Jack Filler at Kelly Goodwin Law Firm, asking for my attorney's info. because a law suit has been filed against me. He had an eastern Indian accent. I am a victim of identify theft, and I smell a scam here. I will make another note if I am called again. Don't talk to this person or give him any information.

- MJG replies to CatwomanYes, it is a scam. A phone call is notification of nothing. If real, you would receive written notification of the case.

- NC| 1 replyThey called my job and we're very rude. Stated I owed a payday loan company but could not tell me when I got the loan nor could they tell me exactly how much it was for or the company. They then threatened that I would be arrested tomorrow at my job or home by my local Sheriff's Dept.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

- Sophia| 1 replyHow can you stop them from calling your job
- Caller: Kelly law office
- Call type: Debt collector
- Erika| 1 replyI got a call from this number on Tuesday April 15, 2014 . A man with a heavy Indian accent left a voicemail saying I am "not too ignore his message" that "if he doesn't hear from me or my attorney it will come down on my head" This is a definitely a threat and for that reason I have saved this message in case I need it in the future.
A few hours later the same number called my phone repeatedly until I picked up. Same Indian man. First thing he wanted to know was my name and social security number. I told him I would verify no personal information over the phone and asked for his name. He would not give me a name. I asked where he was calling from and he mumbled something and started to speak of a lawsuit. I cut him off and demanded that he say and spell out the name of where he was calling. He said "Kelly Goodwin this is an attorneys office". I have since googled this company name to no avail which is very odd and leads me to believe this is a scam.
After giving me the company name he said I am named in a lawsuit and a sheriff is coming. I cut him off and asked if this is about a debt. He said yes then demanded I let him speak. I did not let him speak and instead told him I have not received any paperwork in regards to a debt from this company and by law I am entitled to get everything in writing. I went on to tell him that I am aware that they need to send me a letter in writing regarding the debt and then by law I am allowed to respond asking the company to prove the validity of the debt and that they are the rightful owners of the debt. He then said they have emailed me "300 times" I responded that no legitimate lawyer tries to collect debts via email.
He became irate at this point and said I needed to "listen to him" he said "we have been in business 25 years no one tells us the law" and that if I did not listen to him he "would hang up and the sheriff would wait outside my house to arrest me and take me to court" and then he hung up.
Haven't heard form him since. I am positive this is a scam. I was never told by him what amount I owe or too what creditor. Like most people I do have some outstanding debts that I am working to pay off. I have been called in the past from collectors therefor I know this is not how they work. A legitimate collector has no problem sending things in writing. In my experiene they do not scream and threaten me with arrest. I have sent letters requesting valdiation of debt and for the ones that can prove the debt is valid and that they own it I have been able to work out a payment plan.
I have in the past taken out payday loans but they are all paid off. I have payoff letters that I hang on to from the company I used for the loans. I suspect this caller somehow got my information because I signed up for the laons via the internet.
FYI should you need a debt validation letter you can google samples. Several are very good and you are able to copy them into a word document.- Caller: Kelly Goodwin

- CWG40 replies to SophiaYou can't. There's no way to stop them from initiating calls. They are scammers/extortionists located in India. They like to pick on single women, single mothers, the elderly and those in the recent immigrant community who may be easily intimidated.
Ignore them. It may be necessary to get some sort of call blocker.

- 8069779514I just got a call and made the mistake answering the phone. If possible, do not engage with them, I had a different number call me some months ago and it got so bad, I had to have my human resources get the number block. That's their tactic, to wear you down until you agree to pay them something for them to stop. Keep firm.
