- Alfalfa replies to Joy| 1 replyConsumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

They are all of Indian (?) descent and tell me it is extremely time sensitive issue about me owing money to someone and at the end they say May God Bless you......I have reported many numbers but they constantly switch numbers using unused phone numbers from phone companies. Very irritating but now just disconnect them! My coworker also receives these as well!

He said his name was John Lincoln with a law firm, and that I needed my husband to call him within 1 hour 45 regarding a case against him.
This is a total scam!! Well let me add that the last time this happened, a week after the phone call, I had a fraudulent charge taken out of my bank account/credit card. So it is a scam, but can be totally real!!- Caller: Unknown / Law Firm / Debt Collector

- fcmnbmMy husband returned their call, the guy cited all the charges against him. Stated we didn't pay a cash loan. He verified all of my husband's information. Then when my husband was no longer playing the game, and asked the guy for his address and information, he got hung up on.
My husband called the number back again, got a different person. When my husband told they guy is was a total scam, the guy threatened to contact his employer to advise them what kind of trouble he was in. He eventually got hung up on again, because it was just a yelling match of nonsense!- Caller: Unknown / Law Firm / Debt Collector

- TomHave received several calls from this number over the past few Weeks, all for different names than myself. Have returned them and either got hung up on or told they would not call again. They are bad accented fakes and should just be hung up or cussed out if you answer the call. Or just ignore their messages. I will be forwarding my saved messages and numbers to the Attorney General.

- Unknown Lady replies to stephen26OMG!!! I have been receiving calls from these people all evening with the same story about me owing 8,000 on a payday loan that I never received. I too was told that I need to get ready to be picked up by the authorities from my mailing address or place of work tomorrow if I don't go to court. The caller has a bad accent and hangs up when you tell them that you will report them to the authorities. CLEARLY this is a scam and they should be stopped!

- Miami7777My wife receive a call from 813-418-7428. Some indian guy named "glenn Brens" demanded a cash payment on a loan my wife never did. Or else she was going to be picked up and go to jail. This is a scam. I immediately called the loan co he said he was calling from and sure enough my wife has no business with them. I provided this loan company with his phone number and they were going to alert the FBI about this.
- SamspotJust received a call from this number and was told that I was a "prime suspect" in major fraud case and in danger of arrest. I told hime that he was a "prime idiot and then hung up. Came here to verify my suspecions that it is a scam. My next visit will be to the webiste where I pay my phone bills -- they give me an option of adding up to 30 numbers to a banned list, which will prevent calls coming through from any number I add to the list. They are now on my list. Main problem is that they will call from several different phone numbers, including some that appear as ()92444. When I see that number appear on my phone or TV screen, push "talk" to answer the call and then immediately hang up. They'll try several times, but I have a lot of patience and tenacity, and I'll keep doing hang ups until they give up! I've had calls as early as 7:45 EST and as late as 8:50 pm. Can't understand why there are no laws in place to stop these creeps from getting phone numbers in the continental US.

- RasuMy husband has received numerous phone calls from this number. A message was left on his voice mail threatening his mother, calling my husband a jerk, and making threats like, "you don't know what I can do to your mother and your family". This is not just a scam, but personal threats! They called back after leaving the voice mail, so I answered. The Asian sounding man was difficult to understand and called himself Shelly Cooper. He asked who I was and when I asked what he was calling in reference to, he said something about a law suit and said, "You will see Monday." I hung up. He has continued to call back. This is harassment!
