Recorded message "hello we have been trying to get a hold of you.  The IRS is filing a huge law suit against you. Call this number back immediately."  Don't call it back.  The IRS would never contact you this way.  Definitely a scam.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

Thank you for all that information. Some people may not know it is a scam and call back with information. Why don't earn money by working for it ?

Here's the complaint I filed with the IRS after receiving a call and calling this number back:

    Good Morning,

My wife received an automated call on our home line this morning. The automated message indicated that the IRS has been trying to contact us, and that at this point they would be filing a lawsuit for failure to pay proper taxes. This message urged us to call 817-440-4322. My wife called me at work to relay the message, thinking it was a scam. I called this number from my office line and was greeted by a man claiming to be Derrick Jones, There was a clear Indian Accent. "Derrick" claimed his IRS Badge # is 704031. He asked for my name, I told him that he initiated the call, and should know my name based on my phone #. I gave the original phone # the automated call came in on and, with that, he knew my name. He claimed that as a result of a recent tax audit of my 2011-2012 returns, an error was uncovered on my part. This error caused the outstanding balance owed to the IRS to be $4,365.44, including penalties and fees. He asked several times whether this was an intentional avoidance, or a calculation mistake. I indicated that this was the first I've heard of this and any short/underpayment was purely an error. He said that at this point, I had 2 options to settle the balance.

1.) Settle the issue in court. I could fight the balance and if found to be responsible for the balance, I would also be responsible for the court fees.

2.) Pay the balance now and clear the issue outside of court.

I told him that I would never pay anything without official documentation outlining these allegations. I would then allow my tax attorney to review the documentation and follow her advice as to resolving the balance, if applicable. "Derrick" seemed frustrated at this and again asked, "So you're choosing to settle this in court?", I said "Yes, it would appear that of your 2 choices, that's what I'm choosing". He then said "OK Sir, I will have the local Sheriff come pick you up on the warrant I'm issuing now, You will be arrested and brought to jail, we will see you in court tomorrow". I said that would be great, I'm at work right now but should be home around 6pm. You can have them pick me right up at either place." This is when he hung up on me.

I called my local Police Department immediately and with the flood of similar complaints, they didn't even want to make a report.

Good luck catching "Derrick", let me know if I can help do so. I can see how this type of scam could be effective against less intelligent or confident people. Criminals like this need to be punished severely.

    Thank You,

Thanks for repeating the full message, because only the last few words of it were captured on my answering machine.  I called back before checking here, and got a message:  "The person is not available.  Leave a message."  I left callback info, so I guess they'll figure they've got a real, live sucker.  I'll ignore any further calls from this number (817-440-4322) .

Anyone getting a msg, from any number, with this kind of msg should ignore it. For all its' faults, the U.S. government does not communicate in this way.

I don't understand why the number still alive after so many complain, can IRS informed the provider and block all these scam number?
