Apparently a 3rd party collector - left a message on my voice mail saying I needed to call right back or I would be in "trouble".  Called back and talked to an individual who identified himself as an attorney and that they've file a criminal case against me and that the police would be arriving at my work on Monday to arrest me and put me in jail for six months.  I asked why and was told it was because I took out an internet payday loan and never paid it back (a complete falsehood - I've never done a payday loan..,).
I started to advise the person (he called himself "Alex Smith" but sounded like he was from Bangeldesh) of just how many violations of the FDCPA he had committed, at which point he hung up on me.
I just wish I could've gotten more information out of him (for example the mailing, or better yet, physical address of the company), but haven't been able to so far.  The lawsuit would be SO much fun,,,

These people called me too. They are so stupid to think that anyone would fall for this. This is not the first call that I have gotten from them. I wonder if they are even in the US. Anyway I wish there was something that could be done legally to stop them.

I've received a similar call from a guy named Nick saying that I would need to speak to a Mr. Watson, all of whom were from legal affairs.  When I told him this call was [***] and hung up, he called again and left a voicemail and then called my place of work--luckily, he didn't leave a message there.  This Nick guy, if that's his real name, sounded foreign and would never really tell me what the issue was or what I was being charged with, all he kept saying was that there were legal fees I had to pay.  Don't believe any crap they try to pull over on you.

Just got a call from this number twice at my place of work.   I have gotten numerous calls from these people.  They are relentless and annoying.  I have filed complaints with the FTC, Attorney General and the Internet Fraud department and even filed a police report.  I was told the same thing by all of them, ignore the phone calls, it is a scam but catching them is near impossible as the numbers keep changing and come from so many different places.  They probably use disposable cell phones or something.  Being able to find them and arrest them is pretty much slim and none.

Received numerous calls from this number.  The persone said his name was Alex Watson, an attorney.  He explained that there is a criminal case being filed against my husband for payday loan default.  They could not provide any documentation for the debt, and could not explain when or how it took place, just that a loan was defaulted on and that my husband would be arrested by tomorrow.  The police would knock at the door and take him to jail for 6 months.  The police officer will explain everything to me once they arrive.

Nobody's going to be arrested (although these illegal debt collectors should be!).  Debt is a civil, not criminal matter.  If they can't send you written validation of the debt, then you shouldn't even consider paying them.

Just received a message today from an attorneys office, (I think this guys last name was James). He informed me that I was in trouble with a payday loan (which I'm not) and they had a warrant for me. Told me that I or my attorney needed to call them back that it was time sensitive and it was important that one of us call right back. These guys are a bunch of jerks.

Received first call from this number from a guy by the name of Jason, Department of legal Affairs and Investigations. He asked for me and told me that he was calling me about a criminal case that was pending against me. I told him that I was not aware of it, and he said that I needed to contact Attorney Alex Watson since he couldn't give me anymore information. I started to get suspicious and asked him what was it pertaining to, he stated that i needed to call this number back and asked for Mr. Watson and that I needed to do it right away. I jotted the number down and called it. The same voice answered and I asked for an Alex Watson. The next person on the phone was him. He told me that he was an attorney and that he had been hired to handle my case. I told him that I didn't have a case pending or anything for that matter and that I didn't know what he was talking about. He said that they had notified me through my e-mail address a few times already about my payback loan.He stated I owed them, court proceedings, interest, a total off $989.52. I told him that I had a loan before for $500. He then changed from criminal case to civil case and told me that a warrant had been issued for my arrest and that I was going to go to jail for 6 months and that I was going to be picked up tomorrow. I told him that I was not aware of anything, then I asked him what I was supposed to do about it. He then asked me if there was a Wal Mart near my house. I asked why, he then changed the subject and told me that I needed to listen to him if I wanted to take care of this matter before it would be to late. the phone went dead, then he called me right back and asked why I hung up on him if he was trying to help me. I told him that I had not done anything, but asked how he could help me and why if he was an attorney against me. He then got rude and told me that I needed to listen if now I would end up in jail. He asked if I wanted him to help me, I told him yes. He then mentioned Wal Mart again, so I decided it was a scam but wanted more information. I then told him that it was fine that I would pay the money and asked him where was I supposed to pay it. He said ,well, you know you've never had been in trouble with the law before, you don't want a black mark on your record. He said that they will not accept checks, only cash. I asked why only cash if he wanted me to pay it. He asked me again if I wanted him to help me or not. He then told me to go to Wal mart and buy two green dot. money paks, they are cardboards and for me to scratch the back part to reveal a number. He said for me to call him from Wal mart and give him the number printed on the money paks. I told him that I didn't know what he was talking about but that I would try and do it. He said that I needed to take $6 or $7.00 dollars extra to buy the money paks. He said that once I bought the money paks, for me to put $500. dollars in each pak. He asked how long it would take me to do it, I told him about 25 or 30 minutes, He said it was too long, he gave me 15 minutes for me to call him from Wal Mart. He stated while I did that, he would try and contact the courts to hold up on the warrant for my arrest, but that he wasn't sure he could do it.I hung up and contacted law Enforcement to find out if it was a scam. I finished my call to the officer, Mr. Watson called me back and he was furious wanting to know why I hadn't called him from Wal Mart like he had told me. I told him that in the first place I couldn't come up with all that money, he then asked how much money did I come up with. I told him that it didn't matter, for him to do what he had to do and that I was going to do what I had to do, that was to call the police to check on them. Well, I hung up and then I received one more call from that number, followed by two calls from 0-911.  This is a scam big times and I tried to get enough information to report it and I did.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

Ok these people called me today and I did not answer so they left me a message saying to call him back immediately and that I have a warrant for my arrest. So I call back and the guy asked me for a case number which I didn't have so then he asked for my number that I called from so I gave it to him and he new my name full social security number and "old" address so I didn't agree to any of it and when he told me that the police were coming to my house by tomorrow morning to arrest me I just said ok that's fine they can try and find me there! So he got mad and hung up on me. I then called back and asked why he hung up on me and he said to just wait to get arrested and I said what is the warrant for and he refused go tell me do I then told him that I was calling the police myself and that I would report them he hung up again I didn't get enough information from him but I do call the police and they said that since everything is now computerized nothing is safe our medical records job info even down to filing taxes they can access it all and really there's nothing that can be done at the moment just either don't answer or if you do laugh and hang up but never agree to your info because once they find out that it is your they will try and use it

I just receievd a phone call from this number stating that I would be arrested Monday and inprisoned for 6 mos. The man's name is "Attorney Alex Watson". The call was allegedly from the Dept. of Legal Affairs and Investigation. After that, I received phone calls from "911" and spoke with Officer Anna Jones Badge #348 (619)309-4143  ext.119 and Officer Sinclair ext. 124. They both claimed to be from Sandiago, California's Sheriff Dept. They both stated to me that a warrant for my arrest would be sent to my local authorities within 20 minutes. Then I received a phone call from another number, area code 202 saying the loan company was Starcash Financial and the amount I owed is $989.52.

I just got a voicemail from this number. He said his name was David Smith. If I didn't return the call or have my attorney call, he could only wish me the best for what would unfold on me. This has been happening for over a year---from various numbers. For awhile, I tried to talk to them and tell them they were lying. That just made them angry and they called about every five minutes. I spoke with the authorities---they said that unfortunately, the only thing you can do is not answer the calls. Do NOT talk to them. The sad thing is that this apparently works with some people, or they wouldn't keep doing it. There has to be a way to stop them for that reason alone---some people are intimidated into paying them. He said the call-back number was 818-408-8912.
