- JohnAB1| 1 replyGot call from this number on both my work cell and my personal cell. Did not answer, of course. Do they really expect to SELL anything if they are badgering you? I think that this is just phone number phishing. As soon as they find someone who picks up, then they collect your number and sell it, along with the time of day that you answered. I really doubt that they are selling anything, they're just collecting numbers.
BTW, if enough people do not answer any of these unknown calls, then this kind of stuff will stop. It is just phone generated panhandling. - Sorry, John replies to JohnAB1They don't care whether you answer or not. The reason they illegally call cell phones, and hang up when you answer, is that they play a numbers game. The more numbers they call, the more likely they are to get someone on the line. The more people who they get on the line, the more possibility of a sale. Only if 100% of the people they call refuse to answer for a week or two will they stop calling.
OR, if 10% of the people who check things on 800Notes would go to small claims court and file lawsuits.
It would also help if 100% of the recipients of such calls were to file complaints with the FCC and FTC. (Not all calls are in the jurisdiction of one agency or the other, but they would still notice 500 complaints in a day.)
Some of these people make a million calls a week. That was testimony in a lawsuit filed by someone else against a telemarketer I also sued. In the other case, it cost them more than $100,000.00. Small claims court limited my suit to $10,000.
Others probably make a million calls a day. one tenth of one percent is still 1,000. If, out of that, they only make 100 sales, and the price tag is high enough, they can still make bucketfulls of money.
Most of the "advice" offered on 800Notes, unfortunately, is no way to deal with these calls.
Hang up? They don't care.
Don't answer? They don't care.
Answer, and don't play their game? They don't care.
Answer, record the conversation, video or photograph Caller ID, play their game, find out exactly who they are and where to find them -- then sue them?
THEN THEY START TO CARE.
One ploy which can be fun; especially if you already have them dead to rights as to who and where, is to start to give them a credit card number . . . then stop. If you have the info, just hang up. If you still need valid info, demand it and make them verify it; a back line so you can call them, for example. That credit card number is like tuna to a cat or cheese to a mouse; they can't resist the bait.
It's even more satisfying to watch them squirm in the witness chair -- or sweat in (Often mandatory, but usually more profitable than a verdict.) mediation.
