- Ed StockI just got the same message twice but with different contact numbers. Same script, same story of threatening to arrest you. When I find out the organization behind this I am going to put them out of business once and for all.
- ChrisGot call from this number and they said they were sending an IRS official and the local sheriff to my home or office within the next three hours. Went directly to local IRS office and was told that the REAL IRS does not call anyone, they contact via mail and ALL of their phone numbers are 1-800 numbers
- Carole| 1 replyI got a call from Kevin Brown. I asked for details, when he would not give them, I hung up. He called back and told me that they tried to send a notice in January so since I won't talk to them, the local police will be here to take me into custody and hung up on me.
- Alfalfa replies to CaroleWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam - RebeccaHad a voice mail on my land line on 10/15/2014 at 11:30am from a man identified as Jerry Williams with the Tax Audit Dept of the IRS. Message was in very broken english but stated I needed to call the number 844-210-8999 ASAP. I returned the call and another very aggressive man identified as Roger Reed, again with very broken english, told me I have a lawsuit against me for defrauding the IRS for the tax years 2007-2012 (I owed $7382.00) and if not paid, I would be arrested, a lein placed on my house, my bank accounts frozen and my wages garnished. As well as being subject to a 85K penalty. When I told him I was going to contact the toll free number for the IRS to determine if this was a scam. He recited my correct address and told me not to leave my house for the next 3 hours as law enforcement would be there to arrest me and take me to jail, held without bond until a court date was set in Federal Court. At that point, I hung up on this man. I was extremely shaken by this attack but to add to my already compromised state of mind, at 1:00am this morning my burgular alarm went off. Naturally I assumed this was the follow up to the earlier phone call. Turned out, it was a low battery warning. I can not begin to understand how these people get away with doing this. I did check the IRS website and it appears this has been ongoing for the last year + and innocent people have been scammed out of 5M so far.

- ds0100 replies to LilyMy call said his name was Kevin Peralt, also heavy indian accent, he was looking for Becky.. no last name (not my name) and she was going to jail too. Same thing. If you speak with a real IRS agent, which I do on many occasions as I work for an attorney, the IRS agent gives you their full name, their id and the best way to reach them with an extension. They do not initiate telephone conversations, they show up on your door step ready to garnish your accounts, wages, take your kids college funds, anything and everything to get their money, they don't call and warn you in advance. Please don't give any information. Call the real IRS number, the only one you will ever get from an agent. There is the main 800 number and there are local offices.
- Kathy replies to MJust received a voicemail message from Sean Taylor claiming to be an officer from the IRS Tax Audit Dept. There was a lot of background noise. He claims there is a legal citation against my name and to call back at 844-210-8999 to avoid the matter being turned over to Federal Court and possibly being arrested. I will be reporting this scam to the IRS.
- FranklinSCAMMERS CALLING FROM 844-210-8999.My wife received a voicemail from a person named Sean. Similar to another poster, there was a lot of background noise. He claims there is a legal citation against my name and to call back at 844-210-8999 to avoid the matter being turned over to Federal Court and possibly being arrested. This is clearly a scam, and if you get a call from this number, don't panic as it's a SCAM!
- JeffI received a phone call on 17-Oct-14 at about 3:00p from some person with an accent claiming to be Sean Taylor from the IRS and requesting the name and contact details of my criminal defense attorney as I was being named as a defendent in a law suit by the IRS.
The call came in on my mobile phone and the caller ID was shown as an international call - 0018442108999.
I would not divulge any information, asked why the IRS was calling me from overseas, and asked for a number for me to call. Was given 571-526-0009 - but the way “Sean Taylor” provided me the phone number was not the way a typical American would say a phone number - he gave me the digits 2 at a time.
I called that number which was answered “Internal Revenue Service” by an accented individual who asked for my name and phone number. I would not provide my phone number and proceeded to ask him questions - which he would not answer telling me that whatever he said, I wouldn’t believe. I then hung up.
Sean Taylor then called back and when I asked for more information on the issue, he told me ‘shut my face’ several times. I hung up.- Caller: IRS
- TheresaI got a call today from this number. Heavy Indian accent stating he was from the IRS and had some sort of citation against my name. I needed to call this "cell phone" number in order to avoid being arrested. 571-526-0009. Thanks to everyone that has also posted against this number. I pay my taxes and just got money back! No way this is true. He also sounded like he was in some type of boiler room with other scammers!
