A message was left on my answering machine about someone coming to serve papers with a law officer at my home within 72 hours. The caller informed me to not have any dogs or guns on the premises.  I have received this type of call before. I DO NOT know anything about this and want this to stop immediately.

I have repeatedly received harassing and threatening messages from these two idiots claiming to be from JL Associates. IT IS A COMPLETE SCAM!! They say they are coming to my house to serve me papers and arrest me etc. Of course when you call back to get more information and address they give some bogus civil case number. I have repeatedly asked them to remove my number and of course they continue to call back. The caller said his name was Alex. & mailing address was 5153 Hollywood Blvd Los Angeles CA 90027. They also use the numbers
352-389-1935 and 407-720-4949 All of these numbers go to the same office with these two criminals. IF  YOU HAVE BEEN CONTACTED BY THIS SCAM.. REPORT THEM TO THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION AT 1-877-382-4357.  TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND REPORT THEM!!

That's a good reason NOT to call back. Don't waste your time and breath telling them that, they'll continue if they know they can count on any kind of answer. If you're able to do it, you can probably stop them from leaving you any messages so your phone only rings. These crooks are out of luck if they get nothing from the numbers they call. I turned off my answering machine for my landline and quit taking unknown calls, and if somebody calls with the intent to threaten me (I've had ONE fake IRS call), they don't get the chance. Great way to rid yourself of junk callers if you can.

This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number.  Please note that process servers do not ever call ahead.  That way you can’t dodge them.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

i got a call from what is suppose to be a real place but i looked this number up online and someone said the same thing online as they said on the message that i was suppose to be served with a summons to appear in court and was supposed to be served within the next 3 days and they would bring a uniform officer with them. and that i know of there is no one suing me and i have got calls like this before and nothing has happened. and they also said to call for the reference number on the account which they did not leave any kind of a reference number or account number at all. so this looks like this is another scam and someone else trying to get some free money which will not happen!

    What We Do
The FTC is a bipartisan federal agency with a unique dual mission to protect consumers and promote competition. For one hundred years, our collegian and consensus-driven agency has championed the interests of American consumers. As we begin our second century, the FTC is dedicated to advancing consumer interests while encouraging innovation and competition in our dynamic economy.

The FTC develops policy and research tools through hearings, workshops, and conferences. We collaborate with law enforcement partners across the country and around the world to advance our crucial consumer protection and competition missions. And beyond our borders, we cooperate with international agencies and organizations to protect consumers in the global marketplace.

    PROTECTING CONSUMERS
The FTC protects consumers by stopping unfair, deceptive or fraudulent practices in the marketplace. We conduct investigations, sue companies and people that violate the law, develop rules to ensure a vibrant marketplace, and educate consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities. We collect complaints about hundreds of issues from data security and deceptive advertising to identity theft and Do Not Call violations, and make them available to law enforcement agencies worldwide for follow-up. Our experienced and motivated staff uses 21st century tools to anticipate – and respond to – changes in the marketplace.

    PROMOTING COMPETITION
Competition in America is about price, selection, and service. It benefits consumers by keeping prices low and the quality and choice of goods and services high. By enforcing antitrust laws, the FTC helps ensure that our markets are open and free. The FTC will challenge anticompetitive mergers and business practices that could harm consumers by resulting in higher prices, lower quality, fewer choices, or reduced rates of innovation. We monitor business practices, review potential mergers, and challenge them when appropriate to ensure that the market works according to consumer preferences, not illegal practices.
