Called leaving threatening message from a Joanna Reyes stating that she is a courier. She planned to deliver something to my home or place of business. No acknowledgement of who she would be delivering for or from. Unaware of what it is about or the nature of the delivering. Only threats of doing such unless I contact 844-357-3415. Also contacting from a line blocking their identity.

Ignore the calls and block the number (if you have the capability). These are serious debt scammers attempting to extort money for non-existent debts.

How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

I received a call on 4/20/2016 stating the same thing that she was a courier and had documents to deliver and that she would visit my home and work and to have identification on me, but I could call 844-357-3415 to have them back her off bringing documents to me.  Well low and behold she called again today 4/21/2016, saying the same thing but that she will be leaving shortly to deliver the documents but I could call the number again to stop the action.  She also is calling from a blocked/unknown number.

Beverly Marsh claims to be a process server (and she might be if that is even her real name) as well as many other callers that use shady tactics to intimidate people. As stated above, no process server will contact you. They show up at your home unannounced. That is their leverage; the element of surprise. Also they will camp out in their car and do some surveillance to try and catch you off-guard. They did this to a relative of mine. Legitimate process servers are usually certified by the National Association of Professional Process Servers, insured and/or bonded by the state they reside/work in. However, each state has their own requirements. Some only require a competent adult to serve a process but these are generally divorce or domestic cases. I suggest anyone reading this to educate themselves so you know your legal rights. I am sure these debt collectors read up on this information in order to appear authentic. They assume most consumers are ignorant and use this ideation to their advantage. The Federal Trade Commission has a document called, "State by State Survey of Process Servers". Here is the link: https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/docum ... 45921-00025.pdf

Usually process servers work directly for a law firm, debt collection attorney  who represents a real company, or some other legal entity like the sheriff's office, not a call center. Servers can work for a courier service but again the client utilizing this service is in most cases a law firm or attorney. There is an additional fee(s) depending on how many attempts they try to serve a process if not successful the first time. In my county the sheriff will serve you. If a server does show up, ask them for their credentials and ID to prove they are who they say they are. Anyone can claim to be something they are not. NEVER give out your personal information over the phone or otherwise. The one who is attempting to collect the debt should know all of this.

Also, the Better Business Bureau has a great article, "Beware Bogus Process Servers" http://www.bbb.org/blog/2012/03/beware-bogus-process-servers/

In the comments section is a very detailed response from a certified process server in Florida who outlines the legal requirements of their court appointed servers and what to ask for when one shows up at your residence or job.

I received a call yesterday and today, April 25 & 26, 2016 from Sabrina stating that she was a courier and would be out coming to serve me at me home or place of work. Luckily I work from home and my apartment is gated. Good luck to her trying to come inside. My husband is home with me in case anything goes sour. I don't like to be threaten by scammers which is why I isn't hesitate to contact the number. That same number has never contacted my phone prior so I don't believe she is who she say she is. I'm glad to see that I am not the only victim

They won't show up.  They are cowards and only try to scam people over the phone.

This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Received call from "Beverly Marsh" with a spoofed local phone number the bogus name of "Smoothstone IP" (it belongs to a home health care company fax number, I will be contacting them to inform them of the fraud) saying she is heading out to my residence to serve me some papers. Threatened to come to my office today and said I would have to have a manager as a witness to me signing for the documents. Fortunately my boss is out today, and there are no managers here. But it is all a scam!!

Update: Beverly Marsh is the name of a fictional character from a Stephen King novel. Smoothstone IP was a legitimate business acquired by another company in 2011. The phone displayed belongs to a home health care company, and is a fax number.  All lies.  I will track down these criminals and make sure they do serious jail time.
