I got a call from this number today and they left a message, said it was concerning a friend, that I should pass on a message to said friend within 24 hours or they will go forth with "legal proceedings."  I called the number back and asked if they were a legitimate company.  They said they were but could not give a legitimate company name.  Sounds bogus.

Got a call.  Claim they are Legacy Law in California, collecting on a debt.  Caller's name was Michael Benjamin.

There are probably many others I haven't found yet.

These people are DEBT COLLECTORS.  They buy debts for pennies on the dollar.  They are rude and like to threaten with jail time.  This is the United States.  Debtor's prison went out over 16 years ago and you can't be put in jail for a debt unless it is child support or the IRS (in which case they are not going to use these bottom feeders to collect!).

DO NOT give out any personal information over the phone.  Tell them you want a written letter of validation.  Let them know you know your rights under the FDCPA and the FTC.  Use the above addresses to send cease and desist letters.  (Not that they will actually stop!)  Send them by certified mail with a return receipt.  Ask them for their full name, the name of the company they work for, the name of the original creditor and the amount of the original debt.  DO NOT admit to owing the debt.  Tell them you will investigate the debt and that if you do in fact owe the debt will discuss with the original creditor a payment plan.  They will get nasty and rude with you...just hang up!

Family has received calls from this company. Not proud that at one time I was overwhelmed with debt, so I have dealt with a lot of nasty collection companies that are very rude. The fact of the matter is, I owed this debt. Regardless of what the circumstances were on why I became delinquent. The lady I spoke with at least treated me as a person and understood, she gave me options to help take care of this. I'm not a dead beat I am trying to get back on my feet after a messed up divorce. In short, call in.....it's just a phone call.  If you don't like what you hear, hang up. . Don't be angry because they are calling us out on our financial obligations.
