called for my husband by first name on our answering machine and said they were BlueCross. Caller ID also said BCBShield from number 978-703-2947 -  number in Lowelll Mass but asked to call back the number above. (844-473-5011) Our insurance company only contacts us by email not by phone. They said they needed to update his information = it is a scam. We live in Louisiana.

actually I called BCBS and they verified that number is ok. I too thought it was a scam.

I called BCBS and they said they could not see any information updates needed.  Be careful....call the customer service number on your insurance card not 844-473-5011.  I live in Louisiana too.

Number is legit.  I called BCBS and had them verify.  The 844 number only asks if you have any insurance coverage outside of BCBS.  If you do not verify that you do not have other coverage this will hold up your claims (especially hospital claims).  Quick and easy phone verification.

This turned out to be a LEGIT number for BC/BS of LA. I was asked to call by a voicemail from a different number, 978-703-2947. Some reports here and elsewhere stated it was a phising scam.  After reading greg's reply above, decided to double check.  Glad I did.  It was a real automated information update system for BC/BS to confirm there are no other insurance policies in place for me or my family.  All I had to do was say "YES" my name is elliot, and then "NO" to the other question.

Legit number.  Just calling from BCBS to confirm if any other coverage is being used by your family other than BCBS.  All automated.  I'm on their plan so it worked for me.

Legit number.  I keyed in what number they called me on, and they asked, "Is this Bill?"  I said "Yes" verbally.  They asked, "Do you have any other insurance besides Blue Cross?"  I said "No" verbally.  They thanked me.  This call happened because we used our insurance card last week and Blue Cross wanted to know if maybe somebody else's insurance might be responsible for the injury.  They are trying to exercise their right to refuse to pay your medical claim based on being "secondary" insurance.

It is a legit call.  They only beed to know if you have other coverage - the recording confirms name and asks yes or no- no other information asked
