I received a voice message yesterday, and called 844-849-9363, and the gentleman I spoke with said I owe a loan to a company called Westgate form the Bahamas a a collection agency. This is supposed to be for a loan back in 2013.  The gentleman I spoke with used my brother's name as a reference. I never used my brother as a reference for nothing.  No papers were sent to me, and now i am very nervous.

@Ed, they said the same thing to me. They called my job first telling my co-worker to call them and that it was important, then called my house and I normally don't answer unfamiliar phone numbers. They said they were from Dallas County Court and that they are going to serve me papers at my job, I told them to serve me at my house at a particular time and they said they could not do that and that I need to call a number to speak with someone from Asset Mediation Services. When I tried to press them for more information on this matter they just referred me to another number. My wife was trying to tell me that they were debt collectors but they had me so nervous I had to investigate further and it led me to this site (Thanks Kevin) because this is a critical time in my life regarding a career move and I don't want anything to jeopardize that. How dare they do that, shame on them. They get these outstanding account from the original creditor who may have given up on trying to collect and will practically use any tactic to try and collect on them.

How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

Woke up to the same phone call. I am going to return their call as requested. Then I am going to ask several specific questions in regards to their claim. When, not if, but when the person I talk to starts to fumble, I'm going to drop the bomb on them; I will inform them that I will file a complain with the attorney general's office, and the district attorney. And I will.

Calling, they keep telling me I owe 4500,then they dropped it to 2250,now there down to 488$s so I told them to go to hell And take me to court!

    They are idiots
I'm a former Deputy Sheriff.   Told i should have recieved summons and if i haven't,  i need to call them back.
If I were to be sued, I would be served civil papers pretty damn quick.  Especially seeing how my wife still works for S.O...  it's all [***]!!...  so let them send a civil deputy process server to give me papers, then I might be interested. I've gotten these calls several times In the last year.  Still waiting on papers and lawsuit.
Don't give out any information.  Memorize your local Police or Sheriff's office phone number.  Give that number to them and ask they call you back because you have a bad connection. ..see how that goes over..

They've called my job multiple times, once claiming to my co-workers that I've missed a court date tho I've never even been served a summons. Again on another day stating I was going to be served that day & never showed! They use pretty obscene scare tactics which are really not necessary seeing as tho I've never even received documents of how much I actually owe.

They called again today and was very argumentative towards me once I asked for paperwork confirming debt owed, and why I'm being charged an interest rate of 699% from a THIRD PARTY collector on an original debt. Would not let me get 2 words in to save my life! Formerly told them they may no longer get call my job harnessing my co-workers and he still chose to argue about that. Something is NOT right with this picture but until I receive proper documentation I will now block their number until then..
