Recorded message that my car warranty was about to expire.  I don't have a car with a warranty.
    Caller ID: Pensacola, FL

Like a message below: the caller offered to lower my interest rates but WOULD NOT identify which bank/card company authorized him to make the call.

THIS IS A REMINDER NOT TO GIVE PERSONAL/CREDIT INFO OVER THE PHONE.

If they are truly from the card company they should be able to provide you with account number, passwords etc- not the other way around

      Be careful

My wife just got the same recorded message call on her cell phone.

It smelled like a scam to her and she called to let me know what had occurred.

Got the same call here on my cell phone.  They can lower my interest rate to 6.9%...Yeah right.  I had the pleasure of wasting his time by given him the information he needed EXCEPT the credit card number.  He wasn't to happy at that point and hung up on me.  Some people out there just need to get real jobs.

I just got a message to lower my interest rate on my credit card.  I stayed on the line, when the representative answered, I asked what was his call about. I had him on speaker phone and he noticed it. I told him that my other phone was dead and he hung up on me. That tells me he was up to no good.

they tried the same thing with me offering to lower all my credit card interest rates.  They asked for my CC #'s, exp. dates, SS# and other information.  I hung up on them!

          Becca,

Stop beating yourself up. You are not dumb. Rather, you are trusting. It was *evil* of the caller to make you feel this way.

          *****

I recommend that you file a police report describing what happened. Tell the police the information you supplied to the evil caller. This report could come in handy down the road if you experience identity theft as a result of the call. Depending upon the information you supplied, you might want to contact your bank(s) and alert them to what occurred.

          *****

I also recommend that you (1) request free credit reports from each of the three major credit reporting companies (You are entitled to one free report from each company annually.), (2) that you request a CREDIT REPORT FREEZE with each of those companies, and (3) that you opt-out of direct mail credit card offers:
          Equifax (http://www.equifax.com/securityfreeze/)
          Experian (http://www.experian.com/consumer/security_freeze.html)
          and
          TransUnion (http://www.transunion.com/corporate/personal/ ... rityFreeze.page)

Depending upon the state in which you live, you may have to pay a nominal fee to have a credit report freeze put into place. Here are some URLs with information about credit report freezes:

          http://www.consumersunion.org/pdf/SecurityFreeze-Consider.pdf

          *****

I also recommend that you opt-out of credit card offers and other such things, especially if the evil caller has your Social Security Number, birth date, and full name.

Opting-out of Unsolicited Mail, Telemarketing and Email:
          http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt063.shtm

          http://www.dmachoice.org/offemaillist.php
          http://www.indexcreditcards.com/creditcardnews/010906-how-to-opt.html

Take action as soon and as thoroughly as possible, and you will feel empowered! Don't worry about being thought of as paranoid. This creepy caller has all of your information. You now need to protect yourself.
Do a Google search for identity theft--there is a lot of information out there, which means that YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!

Hang in there, and best wishes to you!

            Carol,

Do you know that the first link in your opt-out links which claims to be a dot.gov asks for name, address, date of birth and SS#?  Why would they need that information to opt out of phone calls?  I suggest readers beware of this link.
            • Carol replies to Nounie

The *site* itself doesn't ask for personal information. Rather, they provide a "Sample Opt-Out Letter (Send to addresses listed above.)". You are supposed to print out the sample, fill it in with your information, and then mail the letter to the addresses provided. The addresses to which you are to send the letter happen to be the addresses of the credit reporting bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The addresses can be double- and triple-checked on the web and, I assume, through government offices you can telephone.

The offers you are opting-out of include pre-screened credit card offers. Unless you request otherwise, third parties can invade your privacy and make unsolicited credit inquiries about you with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. This allows them to make insurance and credit card offers to you via mail.

Nounie, you are correct. Regardless of anyone else's suggestions, you are always right to play it safe when providing personal information. If something doesn't feel right, don't do it.

I wanted to help becca out by recommending things she could do to help protect her identity. We are each individually responsible for the actions we take in this (and, really, in every) regard.

I also got a call from this number today and a week ago about lowering my interest rate to 6.9%.  When I asked if there was a number I could call him back on as I didn't have time at that moment to talk, he hung up on me.  Even better is I received a call with a similar message and when I called the number back, I wasn't able to as my cell phone doesn't have the service to make international calls. Careful these aren't Americans calling us!

I had a call from this number.  Since I didn't recognize it, I didn't answer (was on my cell).  I tried calling back out of curiosity and go that it was disconnected or no longer in service.  That was only 30 minutes after the missed call.  That was a fast disconnect, huh?

I just got a call from 850-433-1850 listed as Pensacola, FL.  It was a recorded message saying "Congratulations" and that I had just won a trip to the Caribbean.  It went on to say something like "To claim this prize Press.....".  Once I heard that I just hung up.  I knew it would be a junk call, with that funky number, but I wanted to see what it was so I could look it up.  Seems it has changed from a car warranty scam to a vacation scam!

My husband was just contacted by "Warranty Division" #850-433-1850 on his cell phone.  Caller said his car warranty was about to expire.  He repeatedly asked what car and what his name was and the woman became extremely flustered.  He then explained how 1 month ago I received numerous mailings from Dealer Warranty Services who had claimed that my warranty which expires in 3 years was about to expire and wanted to sell me a $3,000 warranty.  Woman eventually hung up on my husband and when he tried to call back he got a message that the number was disconnected.  If they call ask the questions that will get them flustered:  "Which car?  or "What car do I have?" or "What's my name?"  Things like that.

We just got a phone call from this # but we home educate our children and don't answer the phone during school hours.. I was curious as to the origins of the phone #, as we don't know anyone in Pensacola, FL, so did a reverse address and then a web search of the phone #--how I found this message board. I'm glad we didn't answer the phone that's for sure.

I just got a all from the 850-433-1850 number. I didn't answer the phone. As soon as the answering machine answered, they hung up. I called back the number and got a message saying the number was disconnected or no longer in service. So, in the span of one minute, they disconnected their phone. Yeah, right.

They are calling asking to mark #1 for a way to lower our interest rate and #2 to opt-out, they called back today even though I chose #2. I'm on the do-not-call registry and the only people that normally call are non-profits because they are exempt.

I can't seem to find them with reverse number searches, yellow/white page, etc. All I know is that they are called "South Central Bell" and that they have had tax trouble and what not with the federal government (if I got the right people). They are located in Pensacola, Fl and they are near the intersection of N. Palafax St. and W. Gadsen St.

Caller ID showed a call from them.  Checked and its a land line in Pensacola, FL.  I dialed the number back and recording says "disconnected or no longer in service."  Obviously trying to hide themselves.  Reminder again:  DO NOT give social or credit card info to anyone when you didn't initiate the call and know you are talking to a reputable company.  Shame on these people!
