- pepgirlIt's NRS, a debt collection agency. Seemed kind of odd, though, when I called back. There was the audible picking up of an actual handset, which isn't typical.

- Karen| 8 repliesWell they got me. They called me with this same story, saying I owed a payday loan from 2007. I argued that KY State Pay day laws state that I cannot be prosecuted but she went on to say that it wasn't your typical pay day loan, that I was being charged with bad check fraud because I used a federal bank account to secure the loan and that the amount was over $500. I agreed and paid $250 on Friday Sept 14, 2012. She said I have to pay another $500 by Sept. 28 to avoid charges being filed against me for check fraud.

- Alfalfa replies to Karen| 5 repliesThe BBB has received numerous complaints about this company which works to collect debts owed to businesses from consumers. Consumers report that this company contacted people other than the debtor in collection efforts, made rude and harassing collection calls, many times early in the morning and late at night, failed to validate debts upon request and attempted to collect debts not owed. These complaint patterns are reflected in the statistics below.
The BBB encourages consumers who believe that a collection agency has violated provisions of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act to also contact the Federal Trade Commission at 877-382-4357.

- Karen replies to XThanks, I realize now that I have been scammed. No more payments will be made. I have also filed a complaint with the FTC and they said I will have a response back within 30 days.
- Karen replies to Alfalfa| 4 repliesI realize now that I was scammed. Sad that my whole weekend was ruined trying to figure out what was going on. I have contacted the FTC and filed a complaint. I couldn't find anything on the BBB website. The info I found was for a National Asset Recovery Services in Kansas. Is that the same thing as National Assest Recovery Systems in Georgia??
- Alfalfa replies to Karen| 2 repliesAccording to the BBB, they also have an office in Atlanta:

If I were you, I would contact my bank, have the charges reversed, close my account and file a complaint with the FTC: https://econsumer.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ - Alfalfa replies to AlfalfaScratch that about the FTC. I saw where you have already contacted them.
- Karen replies to AlfalfaOk So it is the same place. Great that helps alot. I contacted the credit card company that was used to pay the $250 and told them the charges should not be completed. They were able to stop the charges from going through. I have already contacted the FTC. I would love to press charges against this company for putting me through this. I do a voicemail on my phone from them saying I have one hour to pay the amount due or it would be turned over to my county for me to prosecuted. I don't know if that is enough.
- JennyCalled my work phone (major University) and hung up when I answered.
- xI got a call from an "investigator" at National Asset Recovery Systems stating that I owe for a Payday loan from 2007. I asked her to verify the debt and all she sent me was a email from her company stating that "her client" shows I have a orginial debt of $1500. I contacted the orginal company that I took the payday loan out with and they said that my orginal debt was only $425, she confirmed that my loan had been sold in 2008 to a collection agency. The lady at the Pay Day Loan company assured me that they have no legal rights to any money that is collected and that they are not trying to prosecute me for anything. She also said that they do not hire "investigators" to look for anyone. She said what this company is doing is illegal and to report them immediatly to the FTC.

- Rita Mckeithan| 7 repliesI have asked several time to be placed on the do not call list. I have been harrassed everyday and today several times. Christopher is the reps name and now has called 3 times in the past 10 minutes. This is in complete violation of the FDCPA laws. He has threatened to garnish my wages and even said I will see you in court. The reps starts by saying he is from litigations and wants to verify name and SS#. He also stated if I will not verify my SS# then he will be contacting my place of employment.

- Patty E replies to a| 1 replyYou too? Imagine that.... figured it was a collection agency but they wouldnt give me the name of their agency either. Asked for an address to send them a letter, and the lady replied, "your not sending me a letter".
- Patty E replies to Rita Mckeithan| 4 repliesOh Christopher is such a nice guy, NOT!!!!!!! When I asked for their company name and address to send a letter for debt validation he got smart with me and hung up, when I called back a female answered and again I asked for their company name and address and she wouldn't give me the information, so I repeated myself and she still refused. So I asked for a supervisor, her reply was 'all you want to do is complain'. I replied, you don't know the half of it lady and politely hung up.
- ed replies to Rita MckeithanRita, send them a certified cease and desist all phone contact letter with return signature requested.
This will stop the phone calls and if it is legitimate if will force them to use the mail for debt collections. This gives you more control over their allegations and proof of any threats. Then request verifiable proof and validation of the alleged debt from the original owner of the debt. Demand proof a signed contract with the original owners and their right to ownership and to collect the debt. Ask for the date of the last and final payment or last activity on the debt with the original owner of the debt.
If they wont provide an address to mail too, or any of the information, they're scams. - Alfalfa replies to Patty EGood for you. The mere fact they blatantly refused to identify the name of their company and give you a legitimate mailing address in which to dispute the debt is reason enough to suspect they are running a scam operation, according to the FTC:
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
