    Have any of you used short term disability recently? I had my daughter this year and the company that my disability payments went through was American Fidelity. I received a phone call like the ones you guys are talking about and they also called my mother saying I had written a fraudulent check and they were going to serve a summons at my job. The lady on the message they left me said the summons was filed at her court but she didn't say what court it was filed at or when I would have to be there or what number to call the court back at. She just said that i needed to take care of the amount I owed at this number. She stated that the summons was for fraudulent checks, which i know i never wrote. When I called the number no one answered so I had to leave a message. The voicemail at that number said it was American Fidelity but it did not sound very professional. I went to the actual American Fidelity website and the number on there goes to a completely different system. I seriously think it must be a scam but I'm scared to just blow it off.

    I just received the same call..Said her name was Melinda Hill and they would actively be at addresses they have listed for me to serve a summons. Who the heck are these people? I reported it to the Federal Trade Commission. If a "collection agency" ends the call with "good luck to you" it is a 100% SCAM...

    I received a call about a bad check. I tried repeatedly to get documentation of the debt from previous collection agencies and was denied, or promised it was mailed and never received it. This company calls and they have an old address. Never asked me for current address. Also said they were going to serve me with papers at my job. How in the world do they know where I work. Please. They don't even know where I live now and aren't smart enough to request forwarding through the US Post Office. This company refused to mail me any documentation, but would only email me a settlement letter, very generic, looks like something a 4-year old typed up on Miscrosoft Word. I was threatened over and over with legal action, which, under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, is illegal. Collection agencies or anyonoe attempting to collect a debt CANNOT threaten legal action.

    This same person “Melinda Hill” Called my sister left a voice message as follows: Yes Sue Beck, this is Melinda Hill I am in the Processing Dept of the Summons Division.  I am contacting you about a financial Fraud Case for Sandy little that was delivered to my office.
    She stated: Your name was listed on the documents as a reference therefore it requires your immediate attention. Documents will be finalized in ____ County by the end of today.  You or Ms. little have the right to speak directly with the plaintiff then  she gave a number 888-296-4850 ext 177   and a reference number.  Then she stated on her voice mail that this serves as an official notification….  GOOD LUCK.!    ( what the heck?)
    Here are a couple of my questions:  The debt I think that they are talking about is over 7 years old!!! My sister is not the person being accused of the so called Fraud… so how can you leave a voice mail on someone who is only a listed as a reference then tells them that it serves as an official notice...  My sister never was a co-signer or anything pertaining to any debt of mine...I think that this is the biggest crock of crap.   Anyone else have thoughts?

    Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

    i had a similar voicemail from an anthony milloy from the processing and summons division of _____ county.  he received paperwork on his desk from my bank that dealt with an online payday lender.  said i have an active summons and will be served.  they have to contact my employer and see what the process is to serve.  he said this is your official notification.  good luck to you.    I called 1-888-296-4850.   they pressured to pay or make financial arrangement and the summons will not be active as long as the payment goes through on the agreed date.  I asked for documentation and said they will send it to my email in about 3 business days.  it will reach my address in 14 business days.  but yet they want payment to start now and be done within a short period of time.   i havent even received it in my email yet and my first payment was supposed to go through today.  i cancelled my debit card and stopped payment.  i feel better knowing i found similar experiences and makes me more confident that this is a scam

    I just received a call from this number, also.  It was a recording and very hard to understand who they were calling about, but they stated they were calling about a returned check from our bank.  Of course, they did not identify the name of the bank.  We have no outstanding checks.

    Received call in regards to a bad check for a bank I never banked with.  Told me a warrant would be issued for me today, out of NH.  This was for an account I never had and had an address that I have not lived at in over 3 years and didn't even ask for new address.  Threatened that the state had the file and I would be arrested.  Requested validation per FDCPA was told file sealed by state so could not send anything.  This is a scam, NH  banned pay day loans and car title loans and wrote off any outstanding balances due to it being illegal to issue loans with that amount of interest.  I am debt collector, do not fall for this scam.  This makes all of us real collectors and agencies look bad when scams like this one is perpetrated against innocent people.

    Call or goto your local courthouse and ask if a lawsuit has been filed against you in your name. The civil court clerk will ask your name, address, and such and check the computer. I have called in the past and asked if suits were filed against me. The clerk will check and tell you if one has or not.
