I received a call on my work phone this morning a woman telling me that a lawsuit has been filed against me and that they been sending letters to my house, I no longer live there that is why she said I hadn't received them. She sounded very professional and said I needed to call this number 855-253-4192 with a case # that she gave me, and to tell them at that number to send her an ROF and that if she didn't received ROF she would have to file this in the county I live in. I ask her who these people are and she said all she has is a sealed envelope. Should I be worried and call them back.

I was given this number as well to pass along to my uncle who apparently owes back child support, a server contacted me and stated that he was unable to find him and asked if I could at least give him this number to contact the firm that holds his case, passed the message along and called myself to ask to be have my name disassociated with his court cases

Just got a call from a woman who sounded professional stating there was a formal complaint filed against a person whose name didn't come through clearly, maybe RuthAnn Hines? And if I know the whereabouts I need to call this number, she listed a case number, and said the next step is filing paperwork with the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas. We have a Delaware county close to where I live, but the number listed is not the number she left.

No Caller ID. Male voice with a Northeast accent. Sounded like a debt collector. Mentioned a strange names and locales. Could hear "boiler room" activity in the background.

This is an attempt to steal identity and or collect debt.Do not give out any info and put it on no call list with all the other scammer info numbers.I can not find a legitimate company with with this name that serves legal notices anywhere.call is going thru server in Florida but could be from anywhere.Would probably be more effective against elderly.

No do not call them back.
This is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  They also use the “process server” who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number.  Now why would a “process server” want to do you, a stranger, a favor, and at the same time not get paid to deliver the papers?

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Back child support is a court ordered payment.  It is not handled by a debt collector or process server.  It is handled by the court through court officers.  Generally they will simply come and pick the party up, and take them before a judge.  No phone calls, no warnings, nothing, just show and off you go.
Please read my response to the first party in this thread.

Thank you so much @Dew Free. They do sound like scammers. It's ran by 2 ppl, one guy n a girl. My husband had called n they told him that we owe money to them $146.00 since 2013. And guess what, we weren't even here at that time. And they said if u wanna do a settlement out the court then pay $146 immediately or after 24hrs the amount will be $1500.

Definitely a scam; they called me a couple of months ago and when I wouldn't verify any of my information they called my sister and dad on their cell phones trying to scare them into giving me up.
We gave them hell and made it clear we knew it was a scam and would not participate, they threatened to file suit in the courthouse and nothing was ever filed.
Sure enough, today they called me again and directed me to call back a different number but trying to run the same scam; too bad they don't keep better notes on who they've tried/failed with before...they refused to give me a physical address for their company or a website and would only tell me the company name was "Coastal." They also hung up on me three times for getting irritated by my questions, and then put me through to the voicemail of someone that was too full to take messages when they were sick of talking to me/hanging up on me.

Just remember--know your rights about debt collection! Refer to BigA comment above, it's perfect.
