    This company (CFS) just called me to tell me that they were calling on behalf of their client, Mesa Financial, who needs my address in order to serve me for a court appearance over an unpaid payday loan.  They were very rude and argumentative and would not give me ANY information regarding the loan, the actual date of the supposed loan (which I never took out), nor any contact information so that I could rectify it with the client.  They simply stated that I would be served.  The scary part was that they knew my social, mailing address, phone, employer, etc.  As I look on-line, I see many claims of this same behavior on behalf of Mesa Financial and according to the BBB, Mesa Financial is a defunct company.

    Just called back a message from this number they stated I was being accused of fraud by a company for an old pay day loan and if I didn't pay them today I would receive a summons and go to court. And that then I would be responsible for fines also of like $2500 - when I said I wanted verification they said it would be on summons I will receive...we shall see...

    Neither phone, fax,text or email are valid proof of a debt owed. No Debt Validation, no $$$ and the FDCPA is pretty clear on that. They are supposed to mail you a dunning letter within 5 day's of the first call.

    To File complaints FDCPA/TCPA violations:
    Your State Attorney General

    ***A company must be licensed in their state as well as the one they are trying to collect in if two different states are involved.

    Some Tips:
    *Keep all messages
    *Take a picture of your Caller ID
    *Keep any and all conversations recorded to your states recording laws, some require they be told, others do not. This can be transferred to a recording device.
    *Keep a notebook handy for writing time,date, who you spoke with and what the conversation detailed.
    *Check your SOL for your state as well.
    *Attorneys need to be licensed as a DC to collect, all DC's must be licensed in their state as well as yours if different.

    FDCPA violations. This does have ear marks of extortion scam..

    Section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires 3rd-party debt collectors to give debtors written notice of debt (the key word is *shall* ) :
    "§ 809. Validation of debts
    (a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing—
    (1) the amount of the debt;
    (2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
    (3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
    (4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and
    (5) a statement that, upon the consumer’s written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor."

    I just heard from them too. Regarding a loan from Shoreline online who I have never heard of, saying I owe 590 dollars or will have to pay court costs. I don't even have the account they are talking about. I am petrified!! Help!

    See Tamianth's posts above yours & do not worry.  This is a scare tactic & phone calls & emails mean NOTHING.

    IF they call again, DEMAND a WRITTEN copy of the ""problem"" that is MAILED (post office) to you.  Expect excuses & possible threats - which are illegal - but no paperwork.  They have 5 days to comply per the FDCPA.

    Scared
    I googled the number; as of Dec 2013, though it may have changed, this number was used by a fencing company in Texas. Still freaking scary, though.

    If you have ever done a payday loan years ago and defaulted on it by charge off bankruptcy ..The actual company cannot come to you . What they have done instead is sold your debt to a company like this who then try and collect the funds. They have no legal recourse and use this lingo to scare you into paying.  They will tell you they have mailed you with no response yadda yadda..All lies it's a scam to prey on the gullible ..You're not going to jail ..There are no fines ..no sheriff ..nothing

    What really scares me is that this isn't being run by people overseas who speak broken English, which is the giveaway of a scam. I hope they are found.

    From what I can tell, the number is spoofed; it once belonged to a fencing company in Texas. I was scared to death, but I know the 'debt' is bogus.

    Yes, watch for these numbers: 855-622-4294, 855-896-0859, 855-278-1853. Same scam, they have harvested public information from documents on the internet. Close your checking account if they have the account number (they had ours), and they called my Wife and I trying to gather more information. Interestingly enough, they call at the exact same time, different day. Report them to your Attorney General.

    My Father used to put the phone up to the Smoke Alarm and push the button once they were on the line! Serves them right.

    They called me.  I asked for more information and the girl hung up. I called back about 10 times and my call was immediately put on a music recording.  I finally talked with someone again who used poor grammar and immediately started threatening me saying I was going to court.  I hung up. There is no way I have this debt.  This is scary.
