- John Panzetta| 9 repliesI received a call from someone saying they worked for "Gregg and Associates" telling me that a case had been filed against me but US Bank for an overdrafted account. They told me the amount was $2680 and change (I don't remember the exact amount) and told me they accept MC and Visa. When I asked for more details, because I don't know what they're talking about, the lady became belligerent and unreasonable, and eventually hung up after making other legal threats. I called back, and the lady called me a pathological liar and hung up again. I called back and asked for their website, and they laughed and said they do t have a website and hung up.

- MicReceived voicemail from unknown number, said her name was Lisa Cortez from legal verification dept. and that papers were being filed against me today with the county. (However the county is one I have never lived in,in a completely different state) Told me to call 855-285-1994 and gave file number. Never said name of company. Same lisa Cortez with same information also called my dad today and left exact same message and said to pass along the information to me. Called number back, rang and rang finally someone picked up, but I hung up. Instantly got a phone call back from another blocked number, didn't answer, message left, said her name was Mary Lloyd, didn't give name of company. Said I had just called and hung up on her and I needed to call back the 855-285-1994 number and again gave a file number. Definitely a scam. No one ever gave company name, and wanted immediate action today so paper wouldn't be served

- Elaine| 7 repliesGot a call and left message at work so I called back and Mary was very hateful and wanted me to pay $3500 on a Citi bank card from 2008 . Wanted me to give them the money then and was very rude when I told them i couldn't come up with that kind of money . Said I don't think Citibank was giving out free credit cards . And told me to think about it and hung up on me . I received a voicemail from a Ira Rossenhal before talking to Mary stating I needed to return the call or my attorney could call bc I was being served papers the next day between 12 and 4 because I didn't pay that bill.
Mary then called back to my work asking for the owners name and wanted her to call her and asked what my position was with this company . Im not sure what it is but it has me worried.- Caller: Greg & Associates

- CWG40 replies to ElaineNo one is going to be served anything. No legitimate process server calls you up in advance and tells you he or she is coming by. Ignore and block the calls.
- Alfalfa replies to Elaine| 2 repliesThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors - Mic replies to ElaineNo one ever served me anything! Block the numbers and don't talk to them. it had me worried too until I did some research online and figured out it was a scam. Now I'm just angry at these crooks! They called me again on Tuesday morning at 630AM!. It was good ol Mary Lloyd again leaving me a message, saying this time she was from Greg and associates and "they" were going through the system and were going to have "it" taken care of today with County and civil courts and I better call back to Take care of "it" of before the law got involved. If they were real A) they wouldn't be calling at 630 am, it's illegal to call out of the hours of 8-8. B) they never once said who they were or what they were calling about. Just vague "they, and calling about "it" C) if someone was going to serve you papers they won't call you about it first they just do it. D) it's illegal for real debt collectors to call and say they are going to take legal action that same day without giving any notice.
Hope this helps some people. I was definitely stressed at first, and worried, and that's how these guys get people. Don't give in! - CWG40Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a dime until the debt is validated
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.
If they are bothering you, report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.) The same goes for endless telephone harassment
Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question. As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes. The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question. Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else. So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you. Let the FTC sort it out.
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.
You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them. Tell 'em no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.
You have to get tuff with these people because, being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking). the only thing they understand.- Caller: Informational post
- CWG40 replies to ElaineIgnore and block these calls. If you were the subject of a pending civil lawsuit, you'd have received a letter from the attorney for the other party. You'd have a paper trail.
Then, if a case was filed, you'd have received a summons delivered to you by someone licensed to serve process in your locality. You would NOT have first heard about any civil law case from some scammery-scummery debt collector who cold calls you and starts demanding money.
You can check this out yourself by simply going down to the local main civil court and checking the defendants civil list. The court clerks are usually glad to help and are familiar with these kinds of scams. - jonsame kind of call as described in above reports. I have been mcalling the number back repeatedly for over an hour. She has answered on time. I now have a new hobby.

- JazzThis lady named "Amy Garcia" called me from this number looking for my mother regarding a supposed debt from 2010 demanding she pay 2500$ or papers would be filed. My mother has just had brain surgery so I am her POA. My mom panicked asked for the name of the company, what payday loan place did she owe, the name of the law firm, and everything and she was told nothing. They were so hateful and she was so scared she called me. I called and same thing the lady was even more rude and refused to tell me the name of the firm she worked for . Called me names and wanted to scream and argue. I offered to pay the debt but she refused to give me any information or address. She then screamed. It's defintley a scam
