    Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

    These people are calling both me and my family, claiming I owe money from a loan taken in 2012? The agent claimed he was with Vista Holdings Group and could not verify the loan, amount, or what company it was supposedly  from. When I asked him to provide the information, in writing on what I owe, he stated he could not as this was a conflict of interest. SCAM! Be warned! The # was 1-844-226-8637.

    They have been calling my sister in law, mother, brother in law, etc telling them that I'm in "serious legal trouble" and need to "locate me immediately". Then when I call they offer to collect $480 over the phone from me. Total scam. As soon as I said I would report this number they hung up.

    Vista holding are definitely a scam. They call me daily trying to collect a pay day loan that I never made. They claim that the debt was from 2011. I left my state on 2009 to get married in Indiana. They don't even have my correct last name. They use several number to call and there is never a person but a voice mail. We made the mistake to answer the phone and they insisted that the loan ( that I never made) was due and they were collecting. When we ask for a supervisor they hang out. So be aware of Vista holdings, inc

    I called and asked for specific information about the alleged debt.  They said Vista Holdings is the main company for several payday loan companies.  I called all of those companies, and they have no record of a loan for me, ever.  Vista Holdings said the money was deposited in my checking account in 2010 then the checking was closed.  I have had the same checking account for 20 years.  I have bank statements from 2010 and there was no deposit made by a pyday loan company.  Faxed a letter and have not received a response other than more harassing phone calls.  Definitely a scam

    I got a call this morning and so did my ex boyfriend about this Vista Holdings Group for me specifically. Claiming I took out a payday loan in 2008 and did not pay it back. Also claims they took numerous attempts to contact me but won't give me any sort of information...but they do have a real address that does exist. A year the money was taken out, the last 4 of the acct number that I used to have and my old employer. Scarier yet they had the last 4 of my Social. The number that called me was from a cell phone of a woman who claims I am being taken to court for breach of contract & defrauding a financial lender. I asked for proof of this legal action and they told me they are unable to provide any documentation. I hung up seems fake to me. I searched all my old emails and asked my ex we have no record of this

    Total scam.  If there was a civil action pending against you, you'd have heard about it by letter from the attorney for the other party.  You'd have a paper trail.  You would NOT have first heard about this from some scammery scummery debt collector who cold calls you and starts demanding money.

    Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

    If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

    Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

    If they are bothering you, report them:

    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)

    Also contact your local attorney general

    If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

    You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.  Tell 'em  no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.

    You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking).   the only thing they understand.

    According to the Secretary of State of Nevada, this group has been dissolved.  It's basically a zombie group, kept alive (most likely)  by a bunch of scammers working on their own.  Do not pay them anything, block and ignore their calls.
