Got a call from this number saying I owe money to a payday loan I never had. Her name is Danielle and she gave me a case number and said if I did not pay the $550 I would be taken to court and in addition to the original loan amount I will be paying court and attorney fees of $2500.  Of course I told her she was a fraud and I was not going to pay them anything.

This is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  They also use the “process server” who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number.  Now why would a “process server” want to do you, a stranger, a favor, and at the same time not get paid to deliver the papers?

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

got a call from this number claiming they are Atlantic assets, saying I have a payday loan from 2009. I have never had a pay day loan. She even knew the last 4 numbers of my social security number. The lady who called her name was Vanessa, she left a threatening voicemail saying I had been notified and it was a legal matter. I called back, they answer the phone "Legal Department" I ask where they are from, they can't answer. She said I owed $2,390 but if I wanted to settle today I would pay only $390 and they accept debit cards. She said they would send me a letter that I had paid. I supposedly owed money to Liberty group lol. I also asked, where will I be served? What court? They can never tell you. I told her to stop calling or I would report them to the FBI. She got loud said "Good Luck in jail" and hung up. Sounded like a black lady. BEWARE OF THIS SCAM DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR MONEY.

Got a call from Danielle saying that I owe a payday loan from 2012 which I actually did and never took care of it. She was very helpful to understand my situation and gave me a payment plan so that I can easily pay off the debt.

    Obvious shill... replies to Douglas
....is just too obvious!  If, indeed, you did "owe", you can certainly post up the legal business name, street address - not a PO Box - and website of this "business".  I'm betting you won't, because you're just another lame-duck shill!

    Douglas,
Cancel that payment! Just because they have the right information doesn't mean they are legit. This number is a scam. They have hacked into information of people like you and prey on you!

I will be sure to give "Danielle" a call and ask for her alter ego "Douglas" next time I need some fast rent money. You want us accept the word of strangers on the phone that we owe a debt rather than wait for the *required paper notice* stating the debt claim and making specific disclosures about a person's right to dispute. The FTC and countless watchdogs insist that we do the latter.

Want to tell us the name and address and phone number of this wonderful creditor?  If you are paying money to these characters, what entity is actually taking the money?
