Have been receiving calls harassing us at least a couple of times a day for the last couple of months. Looking for someone we have no idea who it is.  I call at least twice a week to have our number removed.  They are nasty, uneducated hoodlums that don't know what the hell their doing.  They still call twice a day.  Who can I report them to?

    Whatever
I also spoke with the most unprofessional, ghetto collector of some sort.  Originally, a woman left a message with my husband stating that a process server would be at my door within an hour if I didn't call back immediately.  So when I called back and gave them the 'reference number' provided, this lady starts going on about an debt account I never had asking me stupid questions such as 'yeah, what's up with this debt you owe the bank?'  Pardon?  She was so rude an ignorant that I resolved that it could not be law office, but instead some type of bottomfeeding collection service using scare tactics to get people to pay old debts.  They obviously have me confused with someone else.....but even still, they are liars and scam artists, and they're not even good at it.  Disgusting.

I also received a call from this number. I encountered the same situation of speaking with a very unprofessional indivual that claims I have a debt with a bank. The only thing is... I don't. Please use caution when dealing with these types of individuals as they are trying to scam innocent people of their well earned money.

Then you have a fool for a lawyer, as well as a fool for a proofreader. Take your scammer shilling someplace else.

I also have received a few phone calls from this number (GBR). I finally called them back and they said that I owed money ($1838.86) on a really old bank account and that if I didn't pay him then he would have me served with court papers the next day. I called my bank and found out that there were some charges on the account which had since been charged off and sent to a collection agency. So I called the collection Agency that the bank said they sold the debt to and that agency said they sold it to another company call (Total Card) I spoke with a gal named Heather, she told me that her company had just sold the debt to another collection agency which i'm assuming is (GBR). Heather told me that the settlement amount that they had on file was (260.66). She told me that she can take the case back on and that I could settle with (Total Card) for that amount (260.66), She said that all I have to do now is send a letter from (Total Card) stating that I have settled with them to (GBR) so they leave me alone. She said that (GBR) is a company that charges people crazy amounts of money and pressures them into paying.
I called (GBR) to let them know that I was settling with (Total Card) and the lady got all ghetto and said that I can't pay/settle with another company because she(GBR) owed my debt and that she is now going to Sue me.
Has anybody had to deal with this to this extent?
    Advise is great appreciated!

My wife received a message from these guys ("Verification Dept.of the Corporate Office") today. They left a phone number and a "reference" number, and said to call them within 60 minutes because it was time sensitive. They said the phone number was for their legal department. I called twice about 7pm CST and talked to 2 different guys, who were both very rude and openly evasive about everything except for what an idiot I was for trying to find out who they were. They both hung up on me.
So tell me what they wouldn't: who are they?

Who they are is the hard part. A "Total Card" reference also came up on a new Who Called Us collector thread yesterday, not yielding much intel. The nearest sensible match I see so far for "GBR" is General Business Recoveries in Tucson. This remains unconformed.

*What* they are is the easy part, namely hostile violators of FDCPA to judge from prior remarks. Learn how to exercise your FDCPA rights as an alleged debtor at FTC-dot-gov.

Ashley, you've probably done more to trace the chain of title on this account than any of the collectors. Now let's slow down and examine a key operative phrase: "they sold the debt"

In fact you're told it's been sold more than once, maybe for a nickel on each face value dollar. Forget all the prior owners for now. Whoever is making a claim on you is your focus now. You can't yet tell from a bunch of phone calls if you have a straight story. Get off the phone and get on a paper trail.

If some collector thinks you owe something, it must send a dunning letter promptly after that first phone call. You have a right to know what company is chasing you and proof that you are obligated, through a written dispute and validation request. A "really old bank account" may have slid past the Statute of Limitations in your state, taking away the power to litigate unless you start talking stupidly about how to pay or actually cut a check. In this case, a plain cease-comm letter will do, as it's too far gone to bother paying from the goodness of your heart. Send these notices via USPS Certified with return card. The FTC and many consumer watchdogs explain how to draft them.

You also have a right to not be bullied into debt payment. Making threats of litigation or arrest is a serious federal violation. Such trashy tactics very often mean the agency has no proof of claim and likely no intent to sue, which become further violations as deceptive practice. Junk debt in general is passed around with little more than names and amounts in easily corrupted files. Even if no law is broken, junk debt claims are not hard to dismiss.

I'm honestly not convinced "Heather" wasn't snowing you. If her boss sold the account there should be no "do-over" or tether to the new owner like you would have if the debt was merely assigned. How do we know "Total Card" and GBR are not two rooms in the same house? The "settlement" in these cases is much more than the account's traded value, and paying it often does not mean you've put it to rest. But that's another topic.

Now that I've unpacked this issue, you should begin to rethink it. You must stop asking, "How do I pay" and start demanding, "Prove I owe"! Information should flow one way, only to you. Funding should also flow only to you, in the form of statutory fines and actual damages when you bring suit  -- a real one -- for abuse of your FDCPA rights, which I have been discussing throughout my reply here.

Hopefully you are documenting all calls and CID carefully and recording clean phone audio if possible. What you need next is a valid U.S. address for your tormentor. It remains possible this is yet another fake payday loan thug from overseas, which limits your response to filing complaints with the FTC and attorneys general.

First called from a blocked number claiming they were from the verification department to try and verify my address. Then said if I didnt call 855-304-3080 with a specific reference and case number that they were sending a police ordered summons to my house. Then when I called the number someone named Courtney Collins claiming to be from GBR corporate office said that I owed debt from a very old bank account and that my case was filed with the attorney general. Would not tell me the address of GBR, but looked them up on BBB and found they are in Tucson. She continued to use ILLEGAL debt collecting practices such as harassment, tacking on interest to the 'original debt' and threats to sue me. Said if i didn't have a job I could qualify for an assistance program were I would direct deposit a check every month into a bank account that GBR had but would not tell me which bank it was. This barley seems legitimate and according to the FTC they are in severe violation with Debt collection laws. They are harassing me and others. Ultimately when I started asking too many questions she hung up on me. This business is BREAKING THE LAW! Someone needs to stop these people from trying to harass people. Even if I did have a 'debt' that was sold to them from a 'very old bank account' According to my state of Missouri this debt is Time barred and is no longer a collectable debt! At least I know my rights because some people do not and may pay these unlawful people.  I have filed with my attorney general in my state as well as the FTC, and Tucson attorney generals office

This number repeatedly called my brother and also my sister at their houses asking for me and saying that a sherriff was looking for me.  I received the number from them and called this company GBR.  The woman was so rude.  She threatened me with jail and said that she could hear my kids in the background- did I want to leave them while I was in jail?  It was hard to get her to even tell me what this was over.  Finally, she said I owed an old bank account money from over 3 years ago.  They were the 4th place to buy the old debt.  They would n ot settle and she said "You either call you mom and dad to get the money or your children will be alone while you are in jail.  The sherriff is looking for you and I will be pressing charges."  I called back later and got a man who was nicer but when I told him I was not going to be talked to the way she talked to me his attitude changed.  He offered to take $500 off what they were asking but it had to be paid in full.  What was apparently a debt under $500 they now want $3,971.13.  They say that was their fees and interest they have assessed in the 5 weeks they have had the account.

I had the exact same thing happen this morning.  He called me at work and said pay up or we're serving you a summons.  When I finally agreed to pay 200 today and 200 more (on a $1200 debt) in two weeks he told me to go to Bank of America, gave me the routing and account number in which to put the money in.  Then he told me he would email me all the info on the company and mail me my paperwork.  I found this very suspicious, so I'm making a call to the company he claims is the original company I owed the money to, and I'm waiting on response from them.

A number of people have come to the same conclusion as I have, and noted that this is in fact a SCAM.

Becareful because these people definitely have information of yours. You should consider looking up your credit because they may have your social security number. Place an alert with the social security office if something has appeared on your credit.

Here is my situation and I am now fully confident it is a scam.

They called my uncles home two days ago and threatened my cousin saying they were from the military and needed to speak to me, or be held with obstruction of justice. My cousin, in fear, gave them my mother's cell. They then told my mother that I have a court appointment and that I have 40 minutes to resolve the situation. She emailed me immediately. (They had also left a message with my voice mail stating that I should call them regarding an issue with a certain property that I do not live - but as it turns out is my aunts address. I did not see this message until today later)

At this point I call them and they say it has to do with an old bank account that had indeed gone to collections but I was certain was paid off. All he would give me was their name GBR. He refused to give me their address and he refused to repeat any information to me when I asked for it. He gave me a fax number to send information to and hung up on me.

I tried calling again trying to seek information and this Michael Irving hung up on me again. He wouldn't even tell me if they were a collection agency or a law firm.

To this point I have already tracked my old debt down. It was sold from my original debt, to a secondary agency, to a third and FINAL place. They explicitly said that this agency has no right to the debt and is not affiliated whatsoever with them. Furthermore that my debt had already been resolved.

These people are fakes and scam artists. That's why the information they pedal is quick brief and ultimately vague. Call your local law enforcement. I tracked their fax number to be a Irvine, California number 949-751-3890. I intend to call the police there as well.

Regardless, even if this was legitimate( it's not) I used to work for a collection agency and everything they are doing is a violation of the FDCPA. Each violation entitles you to sue them for $1,000(plus fees). But, good luck, their number is unlisted online( as you know) and their business doesn't exist.

Lastly advise your family members to either ignore or not to give any information out to these scum. They will try their best to scare people to pay.

These same people have called my inlaws, and my parents looking for me..  I got the same spiel that all of you did.  They wanted to know how much my husband and I made monthly and that since it was "so much" we should have NO problem paying this crazy high payment.  Yeah, okay- if I owed that!  I could go on and on and on, but I'll only be posting what all of you already have.  But before I go I must point out- anyone else notice the names that they're evidently giving us as their "real names" are rappers, sports celebrities, etc??!  I wad told the man I spoke with's name was Christopher Wallace...  someone else said the name they were given was Michael Irving..  when I called to report them they warned me that they also gave the names Sean Combs, Michael Tyson...  honest to god these people are insane.  PLEASE DON'T FALL FOR THEIR SCAM!!!!!

My son recieved a call from them telling him that there looking for me to serve me papers for court. I called the local law enforcement from city clerk, the police and sherriffs department and our DA office, and guess what? they had no idea what I was talking about. They did tell me not to return that phone call and wait for them to contact me again and pump them for info and if they refuse to give me anything it's most likely a scam. So I'm waiting, but at least I feel better about it.

Alright, I just found out that I've received a call from them and apparently I've lost my window of opportunity to talk to these morons. They called saying that I had to call back within the hour at the phone number we all know and love so much. Well I've called a few times already and NO ONE is answering so i cant even have the joy of arguing with them over a debt that doesn't exist.

Someone earlier stated reporting it to the social security office. I think I'm going to do that. This isn't the first time I've had something try to take money from me. These kinds of fake debt collectors seem to pop up only if you LEGITIMATELY settled a debt that hit your credit. Especially and exponentially large debt as if to say "Oh they paid that off so lets see what we can squeeze outta that sponge of money."
