- JulieMy elderly parents live with me, and a call came through from my "nephew" stating he was arrested in Mexico while on vacation. "He" tried to get $2000.00 from him ~ my father then remembered a scam on this level that he read in the AARP magazine ~ he told "him" he couldn't help and hung up. Can you believe "he" called right back, but I answered, thinking I was "Gram" ... I kept him going until I asked to speak with someone of authority, and "he" said I could talk to Sgt. Ron Carter and give him credit card information for his bail and trial. After speaking with Mr. Carter, I mentioned I wanted some sort of proof (he said he's an American Citizen that works in the U.S. Embassy in Mexico and deals with Americans in trouble there. I asked for a number to call HIM back on; he at first gave me 1-888-901-2113; when calling this number, I received NO "professional information" only an automative recording asking if I knew the party I wanted, to enter that number. I hung up, only to receive a call back from "Sgt. Carter" leaving another number on my answering machine: 1-855-349-2568. I DID NOT return his call ~ at this point, I knew where ALL my nephews were at and NONE were in Mexico. He actually called back again, I told him I knew where my nephew was ~ he stated "in a holding cell in Mexico" ~ I said "no he's not" ~ with his reply, "I have his passport here" ~ I answered "verify his name" ... He then hung up. BEWARE ~ THEY ARE PERSISTENT !!!!!

- Genell Ertzberger replies to danI was scammed on 9-11-12 by a supposedly Sgt. John Thomas. I was worried it was my relative in trouble, because I did not know where he was. Who did you report this to? Thank you.
- Thomas CareyReceived such a call this morning from a Sgt Ronald Carter from the US Embassy in Cuernavaca, MX where a grandson had supposed been arrested by Mexican police & he took refuge in the Embassy. Transferred 'supposedly' the call to the grandson who pleaded for the money ($1500, and PLEASE don't call my parents- they'll be SO-o mad that he's even in Mexico.
Gave me phone# 514-224-2630 to call him back (turns out that is a number in Montreal, Canada). Calling back the person answering said: 'US Embassy'. Also talked with a Sgt Oscar Winter on this.
On calling my grandson's father, he said his son was on Scout trip in central Texas.- Caller: 'US Embassy'
- Jon SmithersMy mother rec'd a similar call from the same number (514-224-2630) say grandson was arrested for pot possession after being pulled over for speeding on way to hospital after a friend got killed in car accident. They gave her this number and told her not to call it until she had the full $2000 and was ready to wire it. She called me, all frantic, asking where she was going to find that kind of money. I told her I would call the number myself and was told "they were really busy and could I call Officer Winters back in 15 minutes". At this point I sent a text to my son and he was exactly where he told me he was going to be today . . . at a convention for work.
