Received a call from this number this morning from a "Richard Allen" claiming to be from a Summons Department in Dayton, OH, looking for my brother.  He did not get my brother's name correct, so I presume this is a scam.

Facts:

Scavenger debt collection company that purchases bad debt from first party debt collectors.  They buy debt in bulk and attempt to extort money from people.

Method:  They pose as "process servers", "law enforcement officials", and the "District Attorney's Office".  They say they have a summons or a warrant for criminal charges including fraud and that they are trying to serve it.  They call family, friends, and employer's telling them the same thing.  They use fake names so you can never track down who called you and they leave a toll free number for you to call, usually beginning with "855" that they tell you is the original lender you owe the debt to.  In fact, it is the same collection company.  When you get the imposter representative of the supposed company, they try to get you to set up payments.  They will ask you for your credit card, your check routing and account number.  Once you give them some way to get the money, they will immediately empty your account or start taking money in attempts to see how much they can get until it isn't available anymore.
DON'T EVER GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION AT ALL!!!!  NONE!!!! NOT YOUR SSN OR THE LAST 4; NOT ANY FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INFORMATION; NOT ANYTHING, EVEN IF IT IS A LEGIT DEBT.  THEY ARE NOT A LEGITIMATE COLLECTOR.  IF YOU WANT TO PAY THE DEBT, CALL THE ORIGINAL LENDER AND MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO PAY THEM DIRECTLY OR MAIL THEM (THE ORIGINAL LENDER A CERTIFIED BANK CHECK.  WHEN THEY CASH IT, THE DEBT IS PAID REGARDLESS IF SOME DEBT COLLECTION COMPANY HAS BOUGHT IT.  THE COURT DOESN'T CARE ABOUT A DEBT COLLECTOR IF YOU CAN SHOW YOU PAID THE ORIGINAL LENDER.


FYI - Several banks have been able to get the money back by prosecuting these criminals.

Just hang up on these idiots when they call.  Tell them you don't have a clue what they are talking about and if they harass you, act like you are scared and that they are threatening to hurt you.  I start crying and tell them I am going to call the police since I have their number.  They won't tell you who they are...no company name, no nothing.  The people who have fallen for their con have been given fake information, but a lockbox address where the money is received.

FYI - The owner of this company, Michael OConnor, fled Las Vegas and went to Nova Scotia, Canada where he is avoiding criminal prosecution.  My info tells me he's in trouble up there as well.  He might end up in prison.

I'm getting an attorney to sue these idiots for violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Act.  Heck, might pay off some of my bills.
