They called threatening my wife with court and jail. I called back and asked who was calling? The guy said it was a law firm collecting debt. I asked who do I owe and how much? He said he would talk to my wife not me. He would not tell me who he was or who we owed or how much "they have to by law" The guy then said look it up on your credit report, do your home work and you will do as you are told!.  Checked my credit report for anything and found nothing. Note he had our full names and where my wife worked.

called my exwife looking for me and saying I had a warrant for my arrest. They said they were the Legal Offices of Brazos County. That I had to call back immediately to avoid jail. I called the Clerk Office and Municipal Court for Brazos County, and they searched by name and birthdate and found nothing. They also told me the Court never calls anyone and has no toll-free number. How did they find my exwife's phone number?

Called my wife and said they had a summons to serve me but wouldn't give her any details. Then they called me and the guy even knew my social security number. Said I had old credit card bills. They wanted to know if I would be home at a certain time to serve me a summons. Wouldn't give me a name, just said they were a legal firm. I reported this to the FTC.

Received a call stating legal documents needed to be delivered between certain times, also contacted family members.  I do have things in collection, but no documents were delivered during the eight hour time frame they mentioned.  They stated they were delivering for a 'document services' company that I can't find online anywhere, and told my family member that they represented DFL legal group, a law firm on the other side of the country from me that deals in construction litigation.  Haven't contacted the law firm yet.   Sounds like a phishing scam to me.

I got a call this morning. The guy said his name was Dan Walker. He said he was representing a bank of a credit card that I had over ten years ago. This has been a charged off debt, yes, I know what that means. I got this call first from some guy that was from a courier service that, in his message, stated that I was to call if the time of the courier to deliver a summons to court was not convenient or needed to be changed. This guy didn't even state a time, location, nor a day it was to be delivered. At the end of the message, he stated that, "You have been notified." Sounds really phishy to me. He knew my SSN and where I lived.

Whenever someone tells you that they are a "lawyer", the first question you should ask is what state(s) they are registered in and their BAR number for that/those state(s).  Then go to that state and check them out, contact them directly using the information in the state registration, as these crooks have been known to research real law firm names and attorney names and impersonate them.

Criminals are masquerading as debt collectors in an attempt to extort money from people by scaring them into believing that:
    a.    You are going to be sued and it will cost you lots of money when they allegedly “win” their case.

    b.    That they are about to file criminal charges or that you will be criminally charged (they use the bad check or hot check claim a lot) and go to jail, even though debt is civil not criminal, there are no criminal charges, and debtor’s prison was outlawed over 200 years ago.
    c.    That they will take away your driver’s license.
    d.    That will garnish your wages without actually being suing you, going to court, or even winning a case and obtaining a judgement followed by a judge’s consent to the garnishment.  They also claim that your wages will be garnished in amounts far above all legal limits.

One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.  They often call people that have never even been associated with you because they get erroneous information off of the internet.

They will use the words “Mediator”, “Arbitrator”, “Law Office” or claim that they are a “Lawyer or Paralegal” to make you believe that they are something other than a debt collector want-a-be and that they don’t have to follow Federal and State collection laws, even though they do have to follow those laws.  They also tell you that if you fail to call them back you are "waiving your right to council" or that “the case will proceed without you” which is pretty much nothing but hogwash.  They tell you that they need a “statement” from you regarding the complaint and if you don’t call back they “wish you good luck as things unfold”. They use the phrase “consider yourself notified/served” or “govern yourself accordingly” a lot, something they should do themselves.

They claim they are officers of the court, or that an officer will accompany them, or even that they are sending officers to arrest you.  All hogwash.  They tell you to lock up your dogs and guns for “everyone’s” protection.  More hogwash.

They mention that they have received a Fax document, to create the sense of urgency and tell you that they are a “process server”. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.

If your feel you SSN has been compromised, in addition to putting a fraud alert at the 3 credit bureaus, you may want to notify the IRS.  Here is the link, fill out the proper form (probably 14039). Also file a report at the FTC Identity Theft web site as well as learn what else you need to do:

    https://www.ftc.gov/faq/consumer-protection/report-identity-theft

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Yes, I have been getting the same calls but it comes up unavaliable and they leave a message about being notified. I am a retired Private Investigator/Process Server and never served or notified anyone over the phone. Even my contacts that are still working in this field have stated that the laws have not changed and you can not serve someone over the phone or notified them. All a big scam.

Called and left message that they were from the office of a process service and that I needed to call them back about documents that were tried to be served. Said I was notified, but to be served papers they have to serve it to you personally. Trying to get your address and name. Left the number 855-566-8526 but research shows everyone is saying the same thing and the people calling are scammers. Also it took the girl calling three times to finally get what the person beside her was telling her to say or read her script right.

My experience is pretty similar to everyone else. Called and left a message saying they have documents to serve my grandma (I have no idea how they have my information!!!). Said she has been notified. I called the number back 855-541-4715 and a man who goes by Daniel Walker (Doerfler and Associates) would not give me any information.
