CLLD SOUNDS LIKE A COLL COMP

They claimed to be a collection agency. They asked for me when my husband answered. When my husband attempted to get more information out of them, they refused to give even a phone number and hung up. It was very strange.  

Called stating they had a personal and private matter to discuss and to confirm a previous address. I then hung up.

They were calling from overseas, and asked for me by nickname.  I hung up.

They called my cell phone asking for my husband, then said "are you the wife?", then asked my name and address.  I didn't give them the information.  They also couldn't tell me what their company acronym stood for.

They called asking for Amanda Larsen-Have NEVER used that name before.  Wouldn't tell me who they were or what the call was about.

answered and put on hold for 5 minutes...then I hung up...

Called twice in a row and when I answered nobody said anything and then they hung up on me. Can guarantee I will be blocking that bizarre number from calling me.

Cwhen I answered a call from this number a female giggled & hung up.

They hang up after we answer.

They called me a few moments ago askung for my husband.  When I told them I am his wife how can I help she told me its a private and personal matter and I need to provide my address to get information when I told her I will not give my address she hung up

Called my business phone.  Asked for me by name.  I declined.  They said they had a private and personal matter to discuss with me.  The callers name was "Ingrid" and said she belonged to "EOSCCA" and gave her number as 1-877-277-1406.

Sales call of some kind I am certain.

Called and left a message asking for me by my first name.  Shows only "800 Service" on Caller ID.

From AreaCode.org:  "Area Code 855 Detail:  Area code 855 is a future area code reserved for toll-free calls in which the calling party is not charged. Instead, the telephone carrier charges the cost of the call to the called party. Toll-free numbers, such as 855 numbers, have applications such as technical support, customer service, and personal use."

Bottom Line:  They are charging YOU for their long-distance call.  In this day and age, where most phone plans have unlimited free long-distance, this is ABSURD.  I am writing my Congressman, asking him to write regulation forbidding this practice.

I've also blocked ALL 855 area code callers in my system.  Whether you do the same is up to you.

Below the bottom line: almost everything you say in your post about 855 numbers is FALSE.

The 855 "area code" has been in use for almost four years now.  The FCC was notified that the supply of 800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers would be exhausted by January, 2011 by the telecommunications industry.  As such, the FCC authorized the assignment of 855 toll-free numbers on October 1, 2010.  See:

I don't know where you are getting the idea that you are being charged extra for calls *FROM* this phone number.  If you choose to call it back, you won't be charged on your phone bill for the call, which will be paid for by the owner of the 855 number.  He will foot the bill for **YOUR** call, however.

I won't comment on your reading comprehension being at fault here, because I don't think this mistake is entirely yours.  Instead, the reference you gave was woefully out of date and (I think) extremely artless in its explanation of the use and properties of 855 numbers.  (By the way, if you haven't noticed yet, even 855 numbers are running out, so 844 numbers are now being assigned.)

So save your time and effort writing to your congressman about 855 numbers.  There's nothing to complain about, at least insofar as your generalized phone rage is directed to them.

I’ve looked at what is posted on areacode.org about the 855 area code, and I agree with you that their description of how charges for calls are assigned is somewhat poorly worded, at least if you read it and apply it to outgoing calls from toll-free numbers.  But then, in order to really think that you would be charged for a call from a toll-free number, you would have to be fairly clueless as to how a toll-free number works, especially considering that toll-free numbers have been around for about half a century.

After reading their post, I pretty much think that if "Veteran and Patriot" is not clueless; they may very well dwell under a bridge.

THEY CALLED TWO TIMES ASKING FOR ADDRESS AN SS NUMBER THEY SAID IT WAS A PRIVET  MATTER WOULD NOT GIVE OUT WHAT IS WAS .SO TOLD TAKE ME OFF CALL LIST.

Guy name Bob call asking for my address he want me to share personal information , but he refuse to give his company info or porpuse of the call , I didn't share anything so he hung up. Weird

We received a  call from  855-612-2909, asking to  speak to  someone by  my  husband's name, he is SR.  But  could   disclose the  nature of the  call without  and address and social. I do not  give this  information out freely, suggested that  when they  learn  who it is they  need to speak with that they  stop calling.
