- madisen| 2 repliesA man has been calling my husband and harassing him about a supposed debt that has to be collected. If we do not pay the amount owed he is going to garnish our wages(take us to court). This man is calling himself Mike Proctor claiming that he is an attorney, he also has been impersonating my local "police department". Funny, because my town doesn't have a police department, only a sheriffs dep. The number that the supposed deputy called my husband from was 635-5761. I have talked to the sheriffs office and the number that has called me isn't in their system for their department nor the jail. They also stated that they would never call someone and give them a reference number to call and "figure it out", they would simply serve the person. I also got a call as early as 6:00 am from Mike Proctor himself, and the deputy... First off, TOTALLY against rules. someone obtaining debt cannot call someone before 8:00 am, and after 9:00 pm. Secondly, a deputy wouldn't call at 6:00 am to serve my husbands place of business. I looked up the address that he wants me so send my 1,000.00(a week ago it was 1500.00), and it's to a UPS store located in Victorville CA. He wanted me to send a money gram to that location... Yeah right bud, better luck next time. I've reported him to my sheriffs office, so if he does take me to court (hahahaha) then I have a paper trail stating that he has been harassing my family, and impersonating a deputy. I also looked up who mike proctor is, and he is a hot shot attorney in Los Angeles.

- Justin replies to madisen| 1 replySame exact situation with me. Threatening to issue a bench warrant and wage garnishments. Impersonating a correctional facility officer as well. Sounds like a complete scare tactic scam. I also contacted my local police department with this information. Waiting on an officer to call me back.
- BigA replies to JustinThis is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

- AnonymNumber called trying to gain personal information, and threatened legal action. Also, they impersonated a police officer. Totally illegal!
- LAFReceived a call yesterday from a "Officer White" inquiring about someone I know. Seemed threatening. Gave me another number to call which was 855-621-2005 and a case number. I called and they were able to pull the person up they were inquiring about. I felt put on the spot when someone stating they were a police officer called me and was able to give me detailed information about someone I know. If this ever happens again, I will not even speak to them. Scary.....
