They called with 1-413-672-7017 number claiming to be an Asser, James, and Associates with "assets liability" claims. The phone number is from a cell phone and they redirect you to the main scam line here: 1-855-624-9665

They seem pretty confident to continue harassing the number they choose to call. Fear not though, these are just desperate people trying to get your information and getting you to give them your credit card or bank number.

Called (in this order) my dad's office, my cell phone, my parents' house, my cell phone again, my mom's cell phone, my brother's cell phone, my cell phone again.  All calls showed up as coming from 570-285-5889 (local to my hometown).  Beginning of message is cut off, requests that I return a call to their 'pre-legal' department.  Sounds like debt collection.  Looked up Esser, James & Associates using both the PA and US legal directories.  There is no mention of this firm anywhere... except on Bizapedia, where it says it's an LLC that was incorporated in DE in April.  That's it... no other info.  There is also a facebook page with no info at all.

Also ran the 570 number through a few reverse-lookup engines, no hits.  After reading the above posts, I think that's the trick.  It makes it seem legit, unlike the 855 number which came up with this website right away.

I received 6 calls from these people today. I returned the call the man was not nice. They are mediators for Wells Fargo cars I was paying very well on then stopped. As mediators they can give the go ahead to go to court. Explained I was with legal helpers he said they haven't paid a dime. They are taking me to court for 30k, garnish my wages etc. I told them I had to call them back. Getting in touch with legal helpers who have changed their name to the guardian law group. Wish I never knew the name legal helpers!

This is not legitimate debt collection they are trying to get access to your bank accounts. Tell them to send you a letter to validate the debt which is your right. If they do not or try to make you pay through debit or bank accounts this is a red flag. Go on the FTC website and get familiar with your rights. They can not send you to jail for debt in this country and they can only garnish your wages for certain things and commercial debt is not one of them. You would have been served with papers if you were going to go to court but it would be a civil action not a criminal case. This is a scam I am pretty sure.

They are not mediators, or pre-trial specialists or anything like that.  They are debt collectors.  Period.  Most debt collectors are not interested in going to court, they just want to scare money out of you.  Tell them to send you a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.   IF they don't do that, just ignore them.  Don't talk to them, don't return their calls and do not give them any information.

These people are still calling I asked told mr. cross today I was at work he would need to call back.  He abruptly informs me he is filing with Cumberland county today. I called them back to advise to cease calling me and the call was being recorded. I was told that's not how it works in your state. I hung up. I am at a loss if a judgement is placed I will probably loose my job. I am at a loss of the direction to go.

    Nita -

I will try to explain in even simpler words.

A phone call from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:

    * Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.   ["Written" means snailmailed ... not emailed or texted]

    Source:
    https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via green dot, Western Union, or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.

IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit  the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
    http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:
    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors

Thank you your help and the information. I will definitely send a letter. But my problem is these people don't identify themselves as debt collectors. They are mediators hence the name esser, James and associates. When I finally located them online via their number it is a debt collector. Another issue I have is my husband attempted to call and the number is not in service. I am not sure what is going on their. Yes the number is correct but when I call my number connects through. Why would this be?

Unfortunately I am not sure I owe the debt since we were in this program called legal helpers to help with our debt. But no number I have for them works anymore. Now they go under another name. This is a total nightmare!

Not gonna happen they just want access to your bank account they are scam artists if they won't send a letter it's bull. Federal law is the law they must follow. They want you to be scared and you let them debit your bank account. Please do not pay them and file a complaint.

These people are debt collectors as defined by the FDCPA. I'm trying to find their registered agent so I can sue them. Do not send them any money. Send them a letter that tells them you dispute the debt, and they'll go away.
