Rcvd call from local process servers asking me to call Tony Douglas at this number regarding papers attempted to serve me that they were unable to regarding court date I am scheduled to appear at.  My husband was home all morning and no one tried to serve me anything. I called them back and spoke to Ryan who only said they are a legal firm in orange county. I was put on hold for 15 minutes and then the call disconnected. I tried to call back for 30 min. From 12-1230p no one answered.  I think this may be a scam as there is no company in my area called sac county legal srvc and they called from a restricted phone number. They also called my sister which I believe violates privacy laws as they told her they were trying to serve me and she was a contact I gad put down. I haven't spoken to her in more than 5 yrs.  I intend to continue trying to speak with someone.

Scam.  No legitimate process server notifies you in advance they are coming by.  If there were court proceedings against you you would have heard about it from the attorney for the other side.  They would be a paper trail.  You would already have been aware of court proceeding.  You would NOT have heard about it from some cold-calling debt collector.

    Ignore and block the calls.

I just got a voicemail from this same number saying that they are trying to serve papers to an old friend of ours.  We haven't talked to him in years, but he is supposed to call back and speak to James Harris.  I called it back and it is disconnected.  This is totally some sort of scam.

Received a call from unknown number , said they tried to serve me papers, I asked for what, she said "you could have been a witness to an accident or somethingand that she would stop the process and that I needed to contact James Harris at (855) 657-3810, and gave me a doc#". I, being nieve, called the # and asked for James Harris and I was put on hold, then a lady got on the phone a proceeded to try and make payment arrangements with me for a debt that does exist but not in the extreme amount she implied and the debt is 8 yrs old, I think I would of been served by now. She wanted me to get a prepaid card to load my payment on to and then call her # and give her the card # to start my pymts. Weird.I asked for her name she said Melissa union and she was representing the Law offices of Johnson, Silver & Associates and even gave me another # to call her back at, to which I tried and there was no answer, I left a msg telling her that I want documentation showing me she's ligit and that I could not find a Johnson, Silver & associate company anywhere. I do owe a debt and want to pay it off, but not to some scam!!Sounds way to fishy for me.

How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

I called the same # (855 657 3810), and also spoke with a "Melissa" also from "Johnson, Silver & Associates".
She knew my last 4 of my SSN, my prior address, and where I work..  She said I owed a debt from 15 years ago with some financial corp. She said they were trying to serve me "Papers",  I asked as to "what kind of Papers" they are serving me (a summons, or a debt collection notice)?  She said she wasn't sure.   I told her I wasn't aware of the lending corp of the loan from 15 years ago.  But she still tried to get me to say I owed it, and if I could pay it off or setup a pmt plan.  I mentioned the Statute of Limitations may be in play here, she said it didn't matter and I still owe the debt.

All this does sort of sounds legit.
If this is indeed a scam, it is a very scary & spooky one, especially if they had that level of detail on me .
