- Sam| 3 repliesThey left a voicemail telling me my mom died and I can travel international, but I can't even pay this bill. They did not leave any info on where or who to call back. The last thing they said was,, they have no sympathy for this crap.. I do no know what they looked at if it's true about any bill. However. My wife died while we were in another country, and my mom died the same week.. what type of bill collector has that type of info. Very disturbing. Just the fact that they knew this info and then us it as some sort of vindictive tool. Sad sad sad. I can't imagine what kind of a business this is, especially if they actually are connected to a legitimate place. Such as Mayo clinic.

- BigA replies to Sam| 2 repliesOk, so how did the Mayo Clinic enter into this? What makes you think that they are associated? Even further, when people die, it is usually a public record and there are obituaries posted which can easily be obtained off of the internet. Most of the rest of your post makes no sense. Why did they have to tell you that your mom died? What does international travel have to do with this, and what bill are you talking about?
- Quiet One replies to BigA| 1 replyThis is a debt collector (Professional Business Services--PSB) that Mayo Clinic uses. They call me at least every month even though I have set up a 3 month payment plan with them and pay the agreed upon amount each month by the date specified. I imagine anyone that is not able to pay their Mayo Bill in 1 lump sum gets sent here as I received the bill, paid 1 month and was about to pay the next when I received the letter from PSB that Mayo sent me to them to collect the debt.
- BigA replies to Quiet OneI cannot find a company by that name. However, if they are indeed a third party debt collection agency, they should have sent you the following letter in the mail:
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
That letter would have contained their true company name and address. If you did not receive it, then they have violated the law.
First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
