Area code 855 is a future area code reserved for toll-free calls in which the calling party is not charged. Instead, the telephone carrier charges the cost of the call to the called party. Toll-free numbers, such as 855 numbers, have applications such as technical support, customer service, and personal use.

I got a call from this # . I do  not answer phone that I do not recognize. I checked on white pages, the area code 855 is not even listed. Thanks for the info George, so I can warn others too.

I received a call from this number and when I answered it there was a lot of static and noise, so I hung up immediately. I looked up the number and there was a warning not to answer this number and any number that starts with area code 855.  I t also said that the caller would not have to pay for the call but the receiver would be charged.

Beware this might be from Portfolio Recovery [***] - a debt collector, phishing for credit card info, phone numbers of relatives, ID stealing, anything else they can swipe.

Robo call from "college republicans" that was the most offensive call I have ever received!

They called me and claimed to be College Republicans.  Are the Democrats resorting to technological warfare?

They don't realize we can forward calla to cell phone then block their number and it doesn't bug receiver. They won't even leave a message!!  Creeps !! You have to stay one step ahead of 'em! They must've got my number thru my address ( crisscross) even call me for ex-nextdoor neighbor!

Actual caller: Unknown. Claimed to be from College Republicans, but the recorded message was so offensive and hateful against President Obama that it could just as easily have been a "false flag" call.

If anyone has any contacts within College Republicans, please advise them that this is no way to win votes. I cannot imagine President Eisenhower, Reagan, Ford or either President Bush approving such a message (though I can imagine it being approved by President Nixon.) And if this message isn't from the College Republicans, they need to say so loudly and promptly.

George, that is true for all 8xx toll free area codes .... but only when YOU call the toll-free number, not when they call you.  E.G.  when you call the number the receiving party is charged.  But when you get a call *from* that number, they still pay - you do not.

Anyway, I did not recognize this number, so I didn't answer.

The FCC holds the key to the next generation of toll free numbers, the 855 numbers. The FCC is expected to open the public use of these toll free services sometime in the future, an exact date has not been determined. The growth of business telecom services since 1997 has made 1 800 phone numbers a valuable commodity. The FCC released 888, 877, and 866 toll free area codes since 1997; however, as time goes on, more and more people are getting their own toll free number and the supply is dwindling.

As soon as the 866 area code begins to see signs of strain, the FCC will have no choice but to release further toll free numbers such as the 855 numbers. When these numbers are released there are going to be swarms of suppliers rushing to register specific numbers. It will be important for these suppliers to know exactly when the 855 numbers will be available. Once the Federal Communications Commission announces the release of the 855 number, they will be available at this website.
