Says they are from Discover Network. Asking me to run a credit card for them? Sounds like a scam

Actually this is not a scam, if you would have taken the call or called them back you would have seen that they were simply trying to verify if you as a merchant accept Discover from your customers. I did a test for my salon and was able to get free decals pens etc from their website, things that other companies were charging me for.

No, it's a scam. They called me with the same request. Said they were from Discover and noticed my business wasn't getting any transactions for their card and wanted to verify it was working properly. Was going to give me a card number to run. I didn't do it but I called Discover's fraud activity number and asked if this was something they did. I was told it was not.  They're apparently giving you someone's number and want you to validate it.

Someone called me to ask me for my merchant ID number -- said they wanted to make sure that my account is able to accept Discover credit cards. She wanted me to run a number as a "test". I told her I didn't understand the purpose of her call and she eventually hung up. NEVER GIVE OUT CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION TO RANDOM CALLERS!

Discover is not in the business of scamming people. They are simply calling in to smaller establishments to make sure that they are fully equipped, and ready for the Discover market, as well as validating the terminal to ensure full Discover acceptance. Discover has more then one card in its family tree, and as the Lady stated above if you just listen to what they have to say, and go through with the test transaction. They send you free signage for your company. Not a lot of company's have a department dedicated to the Needs of their clients. Think about that next time you ask another credit card provider for FREE SIGNAGE!

Believe it or not, this is actually legitimate. I contacted my processor before calling back and they said it was completely safe. They said it was more so just maintenance for our terminals and their records to keep all of their information up to date. Sometimes when Discover transactions are not run they lose the ability to see the transaction activity. The woman who called my custom furniture business was very courteous and actually very well informed about my POS terminal and walked me through the process step by step to complete the test. I even checked with my processor after the test was completed. No missing money, no errors or suspicious activity. Plus, I got my free signage and have more on the way just as the woman promised.

Its not Someones card information! its a MOCK Card to update the terminals for maintenance issues, and verification that the establishment has not changed in any way IE; Address, Processing company, and website; if the establishment has one. Discover is a big company, and the person you called to see if they are Legit was probably an Outsourced call to India. I am sure people in India know everyone in America's Discover office.... Its a shame.....

Why are the same defenders posting the exact same messages on different websites? If I see a weird number with no Caller ID name, I'm not answering!

It is a scam, because I don't own a business or even have a Discovery account. Plus they called a google number that I only use for scammers. So if you think it's real you are a fool.

I could see how you wouldn't have a Discovery account considering Discover doesn't exist. Now if you're referring to Discover you should get your facts in order or at least the  correct name before you post negative comment. Doesn't make you look smart at all, but then again that's probably why you don't own a business...moving on...

Having them be able to see Recent activity, and not only for Discover but for all of your transactions. Its like they are inserting a DISCOVER BUG in your system. So if you Want to be Monitored then by all means help them out, but if your good with your services, and you like to keep your privacy for you and your customers I WOULD SIMPLY TELL THEM PLEASE PUT ME ON THE DNC LIST....That's the DO NOT CALL LIST.. Legally they have to remove you....

Obviously there are two very different takes on this matter.  I believe those that say they did the "test" transaction, but I'm still concerned.  What concerns me is that, I've been in IT with various companies for over 20 years (all of which take Discover), and I have never once heard of any credit card company calling a business to check if processes are working there, or doing maintenance on terminals.  It just isn't done this way.  They will always contact by mail for legal reasons.  Never by phone.  The fact that all of us posting in this forum are questioning the authenticity of the phone call from that number should be informative enough.

I understand where the guy above me is coming from.  However, looking at this from a marketing and business standpoint, if Discover is growing their business, and they are just trying to make sure that their brand is being accepted everywhere, how beneficial would it be for them to send out mail? 9 times out of 10, the businesses would not respond, and just register it as junk mail.  It would take too much time, money, and it would not be an efficient way to get the information they needed in a timely manner.  But regardless of the fact, I did the test transaction and everything was fine.  Of course I had to check with my processor to be sure, and I did some snooping on the number myself which is how I saw this site lol, but I am happy that I was able to help them, and even more happy that I received my free stuff!  And besides, I believe that if they really wanted to mess up something in our processors, they would send people directly to your business and pretend like they are trying to purchase something with their test card, then walk out the store and you wouldn't know what happened.  You wouldn't even know that Discover was apart of it.  Point, Blank, Period.

I agree that no company will get ripped off by running the card as a test.  My reluctance was that it could be someone with a bunch of stolen cards and they just want to see if they are any good.  Obviously since you received the goodies in the mail from Discover, everything is fine.

I do take issue with your comments on marketing through the mail.  You must be joking... because everyone receives tons of useless advertising through the mail.  And the one that tops my list is credit offers from credit card companies.  The whole marketing avenue is way off base anyway.  This call was for a merchant... an existing company using Discover.  They do not call the merchant to ensure Discover cards are working.  Call Discover and ask them and they will tell you that this is not their practice.

The person that called me the other day called back today and I pressured him for more information.  He said that he is not with Discover, but representing a local bank issuing Discover cards with new BINs, and he wants to verify that they will work.  First, he's with Discover, then he's not with Discover... too shady for me.
