    Couldn't Scam Me!
Total Scam!!!!  I got a call from an Oregon number on my cell phone (971) 313-0827 from the Discovery Group. He told me they are a 3rd party group that helps track down people for whom civil complaints have been filed against. He gave me a number to call (855) 999-8105 and a file number.  I looked up the number online and it looks like a legit website for Ridgetop Consulting so I called it from my landline at my office.   The guy took a while to look up the file # and confirmed my name. He then asked me to confirm some information so that he knows he is talking to the right person. I told him I won't give him any info.  He said he can tell me the month and date of my birthday and I can tell him the year. Only after that can he give out any information. I told him, he can tell me the month and date and I will confirm.  I confirmed the month and date and then he asked for the year. I refused to give it and he came back with "We made a deal! I tell you the month and date and you tell me the year!"  He told me he has no way to verify who I am and cannot give out personal information. I explained I don't know him or his company and will not, under any circumstance give personal information.  He got really upset, told me "Fine! I will just right this down as refusal to pay and then you can take it up with the court!!!" I told him that's fine and that the "court" will know where to find me.  And then he abruptly hung up.

I couldn't find anything online about this number being a scam so I called from my landline.  Don't be fooled by it. Don't even bother calling Ridgetop consulting. I wasted my precious time following up but just glad I didn't fall into their stupid trap.  Hopefully this post helps other folks who are not as skeptical as I am avoid this scam.

See i work in credit, and was not about to give them any personal information regarding me! when i asked for complete company name so that I can have my lawyer contact them , they hung on me twice when i called! they are just trying to either steal identity or break out very old debt far past the statue of limitations to try to screw people. do not waste your time calling them! and definitely dont give them any personal information!

They Called Me with their Scam too! replies to Couldn't Scam Me!
Thank you much for your post. I am also hoping that people will be able to reference this page through google easier if we keep posting about this company. I too received a call from Discovery Group stating that someone was lodging a civil complaint suit against me, but... before they do, I need to be transferred to them.. but wait there's more. I cannot know what the suit is about or why (especially when I've done nothing I could ever think of that would cause a civil suit against me.)
The caller's are aggressive and authoritative clearly aiming to instill worry, fear and draw you into their game.
When I asked "Bryn" at Discovery management why the normal channels of legal process weren't being taken - if there was a suit against me (such as the company serving papers, or communicating officially by mail...) she had no reply but continued on to be pushy, attempting to be domineering and refusing to take me off their call list. She continued to call me into the next day even after I told her that this isn't the way legal matters and business in that realm is conducted. I was continually riddled with calls, so I took down her information and the company Ridgetop Consulting. When googled, their website has pictures displayed in the spirit of a law firm. However - Read on and you will see there company info posted is elusive and one can't even determine what service they provide to the public. It's a complete joke. They should be reported, I believe to the district attorney's office in Las Vegas where their website claims they're based.
Do not be intimidated by these people. They use scare tactics to pull on your curiosity. Hang up the phone and please post your complaints here so that other's can find this site easier with a google search. Offer to refer them to the district attorney's office - they have no reply to that.

This is a bill collection agency.  The calls made by Discovery group are made by employees from Ridgetop Consulting Group.  Discovery and Ridgetop are the same company in the same building. They are located in Gardnerville Nevada. They are not a legal firm.  They collect old debts. I worked there and quit.

    what a joke
Same deal. Discovery Group telling me there's a civil suit against me. I played along and connected to another party.  When he answered, I told him I was recording the call. He said he can't talk to me if the call is recorded and hung up on me.

    Informational post:

    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors

Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

       is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
       refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I have been recieving calls from different debt collection agencies one of them was from Ridgetop Consulting Group.I found this web site and reviewed the post from Elspeth. I then looked up Ridgetop on the BBB and they have a B+ rating. So I called them back, they had all the information regarding a past due account, they provided me with all of the informaion that Elspeth said that i should ask for.I then said that i would call them back . I thought about it for a day ,and decieded to call them back and i made the payment. As promised they sent me a release of liability and reported the payment of the account to the three credit agencies. What a relief, now if I should be contacted on the same account by somebody else I can prove that the bill was paid.
    Thank you Ridgetop Consulting Group.

    >> they provided me with all of the informaion that Elspeth said that i should ask for.  <<

    Um ...
    1) Did they snailmail you a "validation notice" within 5 days of the initial call?  If not, they could be in violation of FDCPA rulings!

    2) Did you know that a collector cannot change any "no pay / late pay" entry on your credit report, if such entries were made by a debt holder who "wrote off" your debt and sold it to some collector?  Such "no pay / late pay" entries last for ... 7 years, if I remember correctly.

***A company must be licensed in their state as well as the one they are trying to collect in if two different states are involved.

    Some Tips:
    *Keep all messages
*Take a picture of your Caller ID
*Keep any and all conversations recorded to your states recording laws, some require they be told, others do not. This can be transferred to a recording device.
*Keep a notebook handy for writing time, date, who you spoke with and what the conversation detailed.
*Check your SOL for your state as well.
*Attorneys need to be licensed as a DC to collect, all DC's must be licensed in their state as well as yours if different.

I can assure you that your name has now gone down on the easy marks list and you will receive a ton more calls from alleged debt collectors looking to have you pay the same bill or any other non existent bill.  That paper work you have will do you no good.  You didn't question them, and you have no idea whether they actually even have the right to collect the bill.  There is no way that they got the information for a debt validation the same or the next day.  That is required to come from the creditor itself, not from the debt collectors records.  So we are glad that you are happy with this company, i just have to wonder why you looked up the number after you paid since you knew who it belonged to.  Normally people do not do that, but they will look up a number when they have no idea who it is.
