I got a call from this number in regards to a old loan that I had taken out in 2012 I had totally forgot about it, now that I am on my feet I am so Happy to take care of my past debt.  ......

Got a call from these knuckleheads saying they were going to file an action against me. Thought I'd have fun and call them back. Message was from a guy with an American accent named Christopher James but when I called the guy with an Indian accent said he had stepped out and he was his manager. Dude wouldn't give me name, mailing address, or license number saying they had "offices in a bunch of states". Requested a letter and he refused until I would agree to payment...which I wouldnt...and after 25 minutes of this dude getting upset and not giving me any info he finally hung up.

Not a valid or legal debt collector.

Lies! This is a scam.

This post is just trying to make you believe the call is real. It's fake. Same 'company' called me about fake loan, then fraud. Yeah right. This is a scam number. Don't be fooled.

Yes, this is a scam. They called my husband today giving him previous addresses and emails we've not had in over 15 years but then tells him the loan was taken out in 2013 which didn't match up with the addresses and emails we would have had at that time. Also told my husband that he would go to jail if he didn't pay this because it was over $500. No legit collection agency would threaten you with going to jail. They kept changing their story, first it was we received a check in the mail, then it was they deposited a check into our checking account. They would not give him any account numbers or any history on where the loan originated from. These people are very rude and will fight and argue back with you. I used to work collections and REAL collections depts, don't argue back they just hang up and send your account on ward. COMPLETELY FAKE!!!

Hello I got a call from this number yesterday and I googled the number while I was on the line with the rep. , It amazes Me how people dont pay their bill's it was indeed a loan that I had taken out while I was going through a divorce.  I paid it and was thankful that I handled My debt.

These [***] call me everyday, they change numbers, company names & threaten you. ALWAYS...Ask for company name, physical business address & license number. They also claim they can't give out this information. I hate these f***ing people. THIS IS A SCAM!!!!!!.

All these people claiming they are a scam are the real scam. You borrow money and you don't pay it back, then there are consequences to your actions and because there are legal actions its a scam? You people kill me. Well, im glad i paid back my settlement amount offered because i have seen people get there wages garnished and even worst. smh

ask them to send you a registered letter that you would like sent to your attorney.  guarantee it won't happen.

Yeah I asked for a verification of debt and they only would send me a payment plan. Got suspicious and tried calling back to get more info when I had to cancel my card to an unrelated fraudster. The number never rang I guess because it was after hours. No voicemail but if I *67 it did ring to a general vm. I got the payment plan letter with no contact phone and a fake address in Valdosta GA. Ironically another creditor called about the same account and they gave me all the info in the world (which I am still verifying with my bank) at $600 less. If its legit we'll pay but so far smelling scam.

"info in the world (which I am still verifying with my bank)"  There is no reason for you to have to do anything.  It is up to the debt collector to prove that you owe the debt and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  This is the way it works:

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Then, what you do is this:

You need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation letter (think of it as the best $6.47 you ever invested).  Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it.  Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter.

If you are already in the hands of a criminal enterprise pretending to be a debt collector, you may also be in the hands of an different one.  Just because they gave you "all the info in the world" doesn't mean squat.  They might simply be better at conning people.  So, to prove they are a legitimate DC, you make them send that first letter, in the mail as required by law, and then you make them validate the debt with the original creditor as required by law.  When they can't do that, then you do the following:
