Called my land line. CID said New Britain, CT. They hung up before call could drop to answering machine, pretty common for illegal robo-callers.

Similar to the others above.  Call my landline didn't leave a message.  Just says New Britain CT on caller ID screen.  I'm presuming it's probably a telemarketer.

This number comes up as New Britain CT on your caller ID.  I received another call with this number (so it's not my first but it's the first that I actually answered to see what if anything could be done to rid myself of this number) which is even a robot answering machine that when you respond back to the question of donating to their "organization" (which I believe to be bogus and fraudulent as most police organizations in the state of Ohio solicit donations either door to door or use local telemarketing from their local city offices, not on a state level) with a reply of NO their automated response goes into an expected mode of "understanding that many people are giving less in these times" and it tries to solicit further information.  When you tell the "voice" that you wish to be removed from their calling list it doesn't seem to be able to handle that request. Hmmm, wonder why?  In short, don't engage the machine and just don't answer the call at all as it probably won't bring you any satisfaction.  You won't find a caring person to respond back to probably what most people want from this type of unsolicited phone invasion, just to be left alone and decide for ourselves which legitimate charitable organizations we may wish to donate.

CID says "SUPPORTPD." Recorded message asking for a donation to help police and firefighters. I said "no" several times and hung up. I assume it is a nonprofit, but with all the scams out there it is probably just that.

Got a call today from "SUPPORTPD".   DIdn't answer and no message left.  For those that want to know, just about all the calls made for donations to support the police and firefighters various functions (kids, etc) are placed by paid solicitors and the police/firefighters organization gets about 20% of the donations.  The soliciting organization gets the rest.

this number called and did not answer to my hello.  So hung up.  Why bother to call people when you do not even answer a Hello.  Waste of time on both ends.  I am not interested in donating to anything right now, for I have my own problems, so please do not call me expecting money.  I am the one needing money, so do not expect any donation from me.

While I agree that the do not call register is worthless don't blame the government - these outfits use every trick in the book to avoid detection ... want to blame someone try the worthless phone companies that are profiting from all of these calls since they know who is paying the phone bill they could stop them if they weren't so interested in their money. Just like all the slamming and cramming that goes on - the phone companies only take action when they end up in court even though they are providing the billing (and collecting) for all these scams.

Thanks to those who identified the caller as a charity phone solicitor.

"These outfits use every trick in the book to avoid detection ..."

In this case, third party phone solicitors for non-profit charitable organizations are exempt from the DNC list. These solicitors typically get 80% of money donated through the call. For example, if you donate fifty dollars to the charity through the solicitor, the charity only gets ten dollars and the telephone solicitation company gets the other forty dollars.

By law they have to tell you how much of the money they keep.

If you recognize the charity and want to donate, I suggest you do so directly to the charity and not through a telephone solicitor. That way, all the money goes to the charity

Received a call from this number, but did not answer it.  I always figure if I don't recognize a number they can leave a message and I'll call it back if I deem it necessary.  Well... no message was left by the caller, so I returned the call. I received an automated message that didn't identify WHO it was I was calling, but told me if I wanted to "opt out" of their calls, to press 1, which I did.  We'll see if they actually remove my number!

I have asked these people now a total of 7 times in the last month to stop calling or "why" they are calling. A man that first started the call gave his name and said that they were taking up money for fallen police, money to help police, police officers families etc. I told him I am not interested as I have no job and wonder who is going to help me and hung up. Next three calls were the same. Now they just call and hang up as soon as I answer. I imagine they are some sort of scam. I am not giving anyone money when I do not have a job let alone a police department from out of state. I can support mine when I get back to work. Screw theirs.
