In July, I got the 1-866-000-000 phone calls in July, 2007. I answered the "Out of Area" call out of curiosity. With calls coming daily, I began feeling harassed and began documenting the calls. Only in my case, when I answered the caller hung up. Then, on a call from that number one evening, a male voice asked for my husband by his first name. I called my husband to the phone and in the process where the caller could hear, I said "It is that call from that 000 number I told you about. When my husband picked up the receiver, the caller hung up. Since then, I have had no more calls. I did call AT&T and they had never heard of such a number and said I could report it to the police. I did not do that as I figured nothing would be done. Since I had not had that call again, I nonetheless said to myself, "Hey, why not google that number," really not expecting anything. WOW! So glad to know what this is about. I never give out info of any kind over the phone. I won't even buy products on the Internet, much less give any info. SURE PLEASED WITH GOOGLE. Since then, I've had AT&T's Privacy Manager installed.
I would still like to see how these "people" did this and would like to see the culprits put away. (The very first call on my Caller ID listed "1-000-000-0000; thereafter, 1-866-000-0000. GET 'EM.
